If you’ve ever wanted to stay in an enchanting Swiss chalet overlooking a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains and mesas—without leaving the U. S.—this is it! The Sunset Chalet at Sweet Surrender Ranch offers three interior floors comprising a master suite loft, a first floor second bedroom, two full bathrooms and a partially finished basement with third full bath across 1,700 square feet of interior living space and 900 square feet of outdoor deck and patio space in a cozy vacation home perched majestically on a ridge overlooking the Montezuma Valley. The Chalet has two indoor stairways to get around from floor to floor. In addition to stunning high-ground vistas, which you can view from the Chalet’s great room, master bedroom, patio, deck, and private spa hot tub, the Ranch has 10 private acres with trails for guests seeking a tranquil communion with nature, without giving up the comforts of home. The Ranch also borders approximately 2,000 acres of public wild lands, which are available for hiking and walks. During your stay at the Ranch, your privacy is guaranteed—the Chalet is the only living quarters on the Ranch (not a guesthouse). There is however a doorbell/deadbolt/recording camera on the main entry door that will alert the owner when someone approaches the outside of the main door. It will also record a short video if the deadbolt is locked. No audio is heard or recorded. The Ranch grounds and Chalet are also smoke/vape free and pet-free. If you intend to smoke tobacco or cannabis products on the grounds, we ask you to book one of the many different bnb’s in the area that permit such smoking. While service animals are permitted, they must not be left alone at the Ranch. Emotional support animals are prohibited if law and VRBO rules permit the prohibition. Pets of any kind or breed are not permitted. Packages may be delivered to the Chalet using private services such as UPS and FedEx. However the U. S. Postal Service does not deliver to the Chalet. We generally limit guest stays to 15 nights maximum though exceptions are possible. If you need a stay in excess of 15 days, please consult us; other vacation rentals in the area can also oblige. The Ranch is nestled peacefully among the indigenous Pinyon Pine, Juniper, and Scrub Oak just 10 minutes/6 miles from Mesa Verde National Park, 20 minutes from Cortez, and 45 Minutes from the famous mountain town of Durango. The Ranch is only 5 miles from the U.S. Rt. 160 Mesa Verde National Park exit (the same exit for the Ranch) and accessible by a well maintained subdivision gravel/dirt road, and the Ranch's own asphalt driveway. A number of local attractions are within minutes including the exceptional Phil's World mountain biking area. For those guests who like to take walks or hikes, or who bring their ATVs or UTVs, the Ranch includes a trail system around the property and on the 2,000 acres of wild land surrounding the property. The trails are hilly and strenuous and in a natural state so caution must be observed when using them, but they are marked for safety and convenience. Please see the Ranch’s Hospitality Guide for a trail map and important safety information before using the Ranch’s trail system. The Ranch’s asphalt and gravel driveways can be used for easier walks. The Ranch is also trailer friendly—no need to worry about backing up. The main driveway is supported by a gravel loop driveway that was built to allow trailers and large vehicles like motorhomes convenient access. There is also a 30 amp outdoor RV receptacle on the loop driveway. Designed to fit well within the natural environment around it, the Chalet is decorated with Dine (Navajo) tribal art, and a southwestern motif, with traditional western accents. The main southwest facing exterior wall of the Chalet is a Swiss styled angled prow design made nearly entirely of glass 2 stories high—so even when you're inside, you feel like you're outside! There are dining tables on the deck and patio that invite you outside. There is also a 4 person western themed dining/game table and cozy sitting area next to a beautiful soapstone wood stove inside the Chalet (two more portable dining chairs are also available). The coffee table in the sitting area has a top that raises up to accommodate laptop computers. In the loft you will find the master bedroom complete with a luxurious two person whirlpool (jetted) bathtub and an olympic/extended queen bed (six inches wider than a standard queen). Above the jet tub is a large picture window facing northeast through which the La Plata Mountains and the summer morning sun are in full view. There are also two small closets, double vanities, a shower and a toilet with bidet. Finally, there is a small smart TV and streaming internet services such as Netflix are available through ROKU, The large loft is also the master bedroom. Being at the top of stairs and around a corner, the loft is mostly private from the great room below—there is no door to the loft/master bedroom. The custom crafted bed however is not visible at all from outside the bedroom so your privacy while sleeping is secure. Additionally, the toilet and shower area in the loft does have a pocket door for complete privacy (see photos). Wireless Internet service is provided by Starlink, usually between 100 and 400 mbps. On the main floor there is a dining/game table for four (six with extra portable chairs we provide), a sitting area by the wood stove, a small second bedroom, a full bathroom with shower/tub and toilet/bidet, a full kitchen and an extensive coffee bar with a Keurig K-Duo coffeemaker along with complimentary k-cups, and fresh ground coffee. With the Duo, you can make a single cup of your favorite morning joe using a k-cup or make an entire carafe using the fresh ground coffee we provide. In addition to the Keurig, we have a Nespresso Vertuo espresso and coffee pod brewer, and a variety of complimentary Nespresso Vertuo pods. You will find a wide variety of coffees in the coffee bar including Starbucks and Gevalia. You will also find a variety of Torani liquid syrup sweeteners. Finally, we supply a French press as well as electric and stovetop espresso coffee makers. We sometimes provide a bottle of wine for our guests though not always. In the small 2nd bedroom, there is a queen bed, chest, smart TV with streaming services available, and closet. The small 2nd bedroom is approximately 12 x 11 (see photos), but you can be sure of getting a good night’s sleep on the high-end queen size pillow-top mattress. The guests occupying the 2nd bedroom also have their own private full bathroom so no bathroom sharing is required. In the partially finished basement you will find a smart TV, PlayStation 5 game console and a few video games, sitting area, a clothes washer and dryer and a beautiful Vermont Castings direct vent propane faux wood stove that provides heat on those cold winter nights. There is also a full bathroom with a Jacuzzi jetted bathtub. Outside there is a large redwood deck with a beautiful 4-6 person Artesian spa hot tub that stargazers will love. We also provide oversized bath towels for the spa, and an assortment of men’s and women’s swimwear for those guests who forgot their own. Under the large deck there is a well appointed covered concrete patio that will keep you dry during the occasional afternoon thunderstorm. The patio abuts a gravel courtyard where you can roast marshmallows in our “smokeless” steel fireplace, or have a romantic campfire. We provide complimentary sweet smelling juniper and pinyon firewood. There is also a water hose for dousing embers when your campfire is concluded. The summer air conditioning system is an evaporative cooling system often used in dry climates. The Chalet is powered by the local utility supplemented by our own solar generating equipment. The Hospitality Guide gives detailed information on the operation of the Chalet’s systems including the air conditioning, spa hot tub, whirlpool bathtub, woodstove, and lighting, as well as a map of the Ranch’s trails. There are a variety of brochures and books about the Four Corners region in the Chalet. In June, the cedar gnats do arrive and can be quite bothersome in this region for about a month. We provide head nets and picaridin repellent spray for those guests that need extra protection. During winter, all season tires and four or all-wheel drive are highly recommended. The dirt/gravel subdivision roads are partially hilly and will be slippery during or immediately after snowfall. If snow is forecast for your stay, you should consider 4 or all-wheel drive a necessity. Subdivision roads are generally plowed to a depth of 2 to 4 inches of snow, which while effective for 4 or all-wheel drive, may be ineffective for 2 wheel drive vehicles. The Ranch driveway and walkway will be plowed and shoveled when snowfall exceeds 2 inches. For light snowfalls, we provide salt melt and snow shovels for guests to use. We also have an electric snow shovel/blower that works great. Guests must be willing to take responsibility for certain tasks at the Chalet such as bringing firewood we supply to the wood stove or courtyard fire pit, opening and closing the hot tub cover, and dealing with light snow. Unlike a hotel, there is no on-site maintenance crew. For Tesla and other electric car owners, we have a 50 amp, 240 volt 14-50R charging pile for level 2 EV charging and a 40 amp (9.6 kw) portable charger with both J1772 and Tesla connectors. The 40 amp/240 volt portable charger and 50 amp receptacle/pile will provide enough power to complete a charge in about 6 to 9 hours, effective for overnight charging. We may use scented cleaning and laundry products. Nut products may have been used.

This is the perfect hub to combine relaxation and adventure: art, music, biking, hiking, pack-rafting, skiing, or National Parks … the choice is yours!brbrbrbrOur yurt is a social space with a mostly open floor plan and a few private spaces. The loft has a queen bed under the dome with amazing stargazing and a twin XL bed. The main floor has two private bunked spaces with a total of 4 twin XL beds. The futon folds out to a comfortable full bed as well. brbrOutside you’ll have a large, private, covered deck with a Blaskstone grill, outdoor dining set, and lounge chairs to enjoy the views.brbrYou will have a full private bath with shower (no tub) and on demand hot water. brbrThe full kitchen is stocked with all the cookware and dishes you should need (ask if you need something for that special meal). There is a full size oven, gas stovetop, blender, coffee maker, and toaster. Because we designed it to run on minimal electricity there is no microwave.brbrYou’ll find brand new high efficiency washer and dryer for your use. Water is precious here in the SW so please try to run full loads and do only what you need. brbrFull heat and AC are run on a high efficiency heat pump mini split but the real magic for the mountain weather is the oversized wood stove. brbrbrbrThe location. Upon arrival in Mancos on our first visit, people we met separately at the brewery, the bakery, the coffee shop and the cidery had already shared with us that this is a place with ‘steers, queers and everything in between’. We loved the humor and honesty in that statement.. .and the warm and welcoming way we were greeted wherever we went. The next day we put an offer in on a house and 6 months later we were building a yurt with a whole community of helpers. That Spring, 16 tiny ducklings arrived to help us launch Scrappy Duck Farm (follow our not so pretty learning curve on IG). Chaos, learning and laughter ensued as both the farm and the yurt came to fruition… great therapy to weather a pandemic! brbrThe yurt. Craig used his studio arts training to design and build the interior so you may notice some of the cool details that extended the build schedule but please the eye. Katie and the kids are consistently tempted to steal your vacation opportunity by threatening to live full time in the yurt. One of Katie’s favorite things is sitting outside and watching the flocks and flocks of birds start and end their days as the sun rises and sets. We’ve tried to create a warm, welcoming and comfortable experience that matches this community. You’ll find plumbing and electricity, heating and air conditioning, wide doorways and hallways, accessible bed height, and pretty darn good wifi for a rural getaway. Layer up for temperature changes, bring boots to enjoy the mud and help gather eggs from the ducks, wear slippers for warm toes and to avoid splinters. If you’re lucky you’ll be treated to clear skies and the milky way or cloudy skies and incredible thunder and lightning shows. Mother Nature is not kidding around here.brbrEasy access - just come up our driveway past our house and barn and the yurt is right there. Please park off the circular driveway by the front door of the yurt. brbrFrom Mancos go south on Road 41 (Weber Canyon). We are about 7 minutes south of town on the left (1/2mile past the stop sign at road G where it turns to gravel). Look for the BRIGHT GREEN mailbox. We have a shared driveway so take the immediate left through the green gate and then up the hill. Please drive slowly as there are animals free ranging on the property.brbrWe live on site and are available if needed. You have your own space and you may see us on the property. Feel free to interact as much or as little as you like.brbrYou’ll know you’re getting close when you see the lone donkey guarded by myriad prairie dogs standing at alert. You’ll start to breathe again when you laugh and have to slow down for the peacocks meandering across the road at the stop sign. At dawn and dusk all of your senses will wake up as the flocks of birds begin and end their day flying en masse above. brbrThis is a farming community so be careful on the roads. Stopping for cattle, deer, horses, peacocks, turkeys, and other wildlife is a common event - if you're lucky you may even get delayed by - or caught in - a cattle drive! We are surrounded by large acreage farming and BLM land and most nights can’t see a single man made light to the south. You’ll find most everyone is very friendly and welcoming.brbrThis location is a perfect hub for 4 Corners Adventures but you can also keep busy right here in Weber Canyon. The rural gravel road is used regularly for walking and biking, horse-back riding and cattle drives. Many neighbors also free-range their animals so the occasional guinea fowl, turkey, dog, goat, or peacock may slow your commute. brbrMore nearby adventures can be found on horseback trail rides from Mesa Verde Stables (1 mile down the road), or on guided mountain biking and packrafting adventures from our friends at Four Corners Guides at the end of the canyon.brbrThe driveway is gravel and there is accessible parking right next to the yurt for easy unloading. No 4-wheel drive is needed but the roads can be dusty and muddy.brbrFew notes and rules to keep things safe and set expectations for the experience.brbrWe built this yurt ourselves and want you to have a great time. It has been a labor of love on nights and weekends to create a home away from home for you. It is fully equipped for all your cooking needs, also has a coffee maker, blender, waffle iron and toaster. brbrThe bedroom has a very comfortable King bed, dresser drawers, a large two-person swivel chair and a gas stove. The bathroom is very roomy, has maple counter tops and a custom tile shower. brbrYou can enjoy the outside on our large wrap around deck that provides amazing view of sunrises, sunsets, and star gazing. Opening the double doors into the main floor of the cabin you will notice right away the gorgeous walnut wood flooring that was milled locally in Mancos. The kitchen is fully furnished with custom cabinets, granite countertops and a large copper sink. It is also thoughtfully stocked with all of your cooking and house hold needs. Right off of the kitchen is the dining area with a gorgeous one of a kind, locally made aspen and ponderosa pine table that seats 10. This large open floor plan also includes a living room with a gas fireplace, a 40 HDTV and mountain views in every direction. In the primary suite you can lie in your king size bed at night and look out of the window at gorgeous views, possibly a full moon as it sits above the Mesa Verde National Park and watch the stars as they tell you the secrets of the ancient pueblo Indians who lived there before. Don't bother looking for your slippers because if you have to get up in the night the floors are heated so you will come back to bed feeling cozy and warm. The primary bath includes a sauna with hand made tiles created by a local artisan and more beautiful views.
