PRIVATE OCEANFRONT RETREAT - enjoy the peace and quiet of an historic Maine home

Harpswell, Maine, United States

HISTORIC ISLAND COTTAGEbrBuilt in 1918, The Gills is an original summer cottage perched above the sea at the very end of Bailey Island. Secluded far from the road, nestled in a grove of pine and spruce, the house is pure tranquility. Each beautifully appointed room is both comfortable and authentic.brbrEnjoy naps on the porch swing or walk to nearby beaches, restaurants and shops. Explore tide pools along the rocky coastline. Go sailing or kayaking. Fish for striped bass from the rocks, just steps from the porch. Enjoy fresh lobster pulled from the ocean that morning by one of the local lobstermen.brbrWhatever you choose to do, it all comes back to the view. Clear and calm one day, misty and grey the next. Sit back and watch the sea and sky change with the weather. Hour by hour. Minute by minute. Always beautiful. Always different.brbrThe Gills will give you the opportunity to slow down, and remember how good it feels to do nothing at all, surrounded by friends and family.brbrTHE GILLS sleeps 6 - with two queen beds and two twin beds.br*br*br*brTHE GILLS GROUPbrbrTHE GILLS GROUP is a collection of oceanfront cottages that can be rented together for larger groups or intimate events. The cottages are adjacent, each with its own spectacular ocean views.brbrFor larger groups - please check out the other GILLS GROUP cottages (Jaquish Lane and The Red House).brbrJaquish Lane sleeps 12 (VRBO property # 733483) and The Red House sleeps 4 (VRBO property # 1063510). Renting two (or more) of THE GILLS GROUP cottages together is the perfect way for larger groups to be “together” while still having a space of your own.br*br*br*brBAILEY ISLANDbrbr25 minutes from Brunswick and Bowdoin College. 40 minutes from Freeport and L.L.Bean. 50 minutes from Portland - Bailey Island is the perfect place to unplug, relax and recharge.br*br*br*brTHE OWNERbrMy name is Carter Smith and I am the owner of THE GILLS GROUP (The Red House #1063510, Jaquish Lane #733483 and The Gills). I was born on Bailey Island and after traveling the world I know that this little island is special. As both a photographer and filmmaker, I travel quite a bit and I've furnished the houses with things I've collected from around the world (and around Maine). These are not just rental propertiesto me . These are houses I've designed and furnished with love and attention to detail - places where I spend time with family and friends whenever I get the chance. Places that I love sharing.br*br*br*brFROM THE GUESTBOOKbrbrWe fell in love with the cottage as soon as we climbed the steps to the porch and saw the expansive ocean views.brJulia K.brbrYou have created a beautiful retreat that captures a time when life was slower and the focus was on what is truly important - those we love.brCynthia M.brbrWalking into The Gills was like taking a step back into another time. Every room feels like it has a story to tell.brAlison C.brbrThere are special touches in every room, and the owner has gone above and beyond with great mattresses, linens and towelsbrAja M.brbrWe loved starting each day on the porch with our coffee - watching the lobster boats, seabirds, and the changing colors of the oceanbrKelly B.brbrThe location is breathtaking, with wonderful sunrises and sunsets.brKim F.brbrThis place has stolen our family's hearts.brMichelle K.br*br*br*brIMPORTANT NOTE:brThis cottage is perfect if you're seeking an authentic Maine experience and love historic homes - BUT - The Gills is over 100 years old and has all of the quirks of an old home. There are changes in the level of the floor at several of the thresholds between rooms. The original horsehair plaster in the upstairs bedrooms and hallway is intact - and imperfect in places. The original canvas floor runner on the stairs is still in place - and shows it's age with the wear of the many people who have enjoyed this magical cottage. As the owner - and lover of historic homes - I have chosen to keep these original details intact. If you are expecting something glossy and perfect and new - then The Gills is probably not the cottage for you. If you love the authentic charm of a truly historic home - the quirks and odd details that can't fully be shown in a photograph - then you just may fall in love. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact our property manager David Johnson - Dave@thegillsgroup.combrbrbrKeywords: Private, Oceanfront, Family, Cottage

THIS IS THE PLACE - Intimate luxury cottage w massive oceanfront steam room

Harpswell, Maine, United States

THE RED HOUSEbrThe 116 year old Red House at the head of Mackerel Cove was built when most of Bailey Island was wild and undeveloped - and once you've spent time here it's clear why this spot was chosen to build. You FEEL the ocean just steps away wherever you are on the property - and each night the sun sets directly in front of you across the water.brbrThis place is magic. brbrA house where no matter what you are doing - cooking dinner with loved ones - reading a book on the porch - spending a lazy day in bed - the sea is always present - steps away or right outside your window.br*br*br*brTHE BEACHbrThe private pebble beach is the perfect place to launch kayaks at any tide. Exploring from the water is one of the best ways to experience Casco Bay. The tide pools in front of the house are something kids (of all ages) love.br*br*br*brTHE VIEWbrSpending time here always comes back to the view. Clear and calm one day, misty and grey the next. Watch the sea and sky shift with the weather. Hour by hour. Minute by minute. Always beautiful. Always different.br*br*brTHE BIRDSbrFrom heron and gulls to Eider and even bald eagles, this sheltered spot is a birdwatchers dream. I watched a pair of sea ducks guide their ducklings along the shore. Herons fishing in the tide pools at low tide. A bald eagle at the end of the wharf. Whatever you see, you can be sure that it's going to be beautiful.br*br*br*brNEW OWNERSHIPbrThe Red House is now owned by Little Harbor Properties and managed by Safe Harbour Property Management - Safe Harbour is the same management team that you had when The Gills Group owned The Red House so please expect the same great service. This also means THE GILLS GROUP still has a collection of oceanfront cottages that can be rented together with The Red House if available for larger groups or hosting intimate events. The cottages are all a short walk from each other and are the perfect place to be away while still being together.brbrTHE GILLS GROUP cottages are Jaquish Lane (VRBO 733483) which sleeps 12 and The Gills (VRBO 318909) which sleeps 6.br*br*br*brEVENTSbrThe Red House with spectacular sunsets on the west can be booked with THE GILLS GROUP cottages, JAQUISH and THE GILLS offer the ability to host events such as weddings etc. and can be booked with THE RED HOUSE when available as an lodging accommodation for wedding guests etc. Event fees vary depending on the size of the gathering and number of guests at JAQUISH and THE GILLS. Contact the property manager for more information.br*br*brbr*br*br*brLOCATIONbrMackerel Cove - Bailey Island - Harpswell - Maine.brThere are many other properties in the area - but there are very few that rise above the (sometimes crude) comfort that passes for acceptable in a summer island cottage. brbrbrBAILEY ISLANDbr20 minutes from Brunswick and Bowdoin College. 40 minutes from Freeport and L.L.Bean. 55 minutes from Portland.brbrbrPETSbrPets are welcome at The Red House and will incur a fee of $60 per night per pet. This is non-negotiable. Everyone says, My pet would never damage anything, but sadly, experience has proven that's not always the case.brbrBOOKINGbrA booking using the ONLINE BOOKING feature is ONLY considered confirmed once you have communicated with the property manager.

The back of the House faces the west and is located less than 50 feet from Merriconeag Sound; the front of the house faces the east and is located less than 50 feet from Garrison Cove. Every room has incredible long distance oceanfront views. The view from the front of our property was listed in the 60 Year Anniversary Edition of Downeast Magazine as one of the best views in Maine. The House is surrounded by so much water and ocean scenery, you will feel like you are cruising on a ship. See some of the most stunning sunrises and sunsets from the large windows and decks on the East, West, and North sides of the House. Garrison Cove is a working lobster harbor with several lobster boats moored and a working lobster dock in front of the House. Walk 200 yards to famous Cook's Lobster Restaurant and Lobster Pound and eat lobsters at the Restaurant or buy precooked lobsters at the Pound or live ones and cook them at the House. You won't taste fresher or better lobsters anywhere. The lobsters you eat are caught in the waters surrounding the House on the same day by the lobster boats moored directly in front of the House. If you have your own boat, we have a deep water mooring you can use located in Garrison Cove in front of our property. House has many amenities including 60 inch TV and Surround Sound System and gas fireplace in living room, WIFI throughout house, and 32 inch TVs in all 5 Bedrooms, 3 of which have private decks. Central air conditioning, screen porch overlooking Sound, and decks on both side of house and huge raised sun deck on edge of Merriconeag Sound. The views around the House, especially Garrison Cove and the Cribstone Bridge, are some of the most photographed scenes on the Maine Coast and extend to Small Point to the East, High Head to the North, Harpswell Neck to the West and Cape Elizabeth to the Southwest. From the House screen porch and oceanfront decks, see seals swimming in the Sound, lobster men and women setting and pulling traps, and Casco Bay Lines ferry boats, kayaks, skiffs, sailboats, tuna, fishing and lobster boats cruising by just a stones throw from the shore of the property. Walk on the beach on the front of the House adjacent to Garrison Cove or the shoreline on the deepwater oceanfront side finding shells, crabs, mussels, snails, sea glass, driftwood and other ocean treasures.

Cottage

Quaint cottage intimately set on the rocky coast overlooking Casco Bay

Harpswell, Maine, United States

Nestled in a canopy of green with beautiful westerly views from Broad Sound to Casco Bay, Bober Cottage has 185ft of private shoreline that offers the perfect setting for your getaway to the coast of Maine.brbrYou’ll love the privacy of this property, easy access to coastal restaurants, and a full service marina for endless adventures.brbrInside the cottage, you will find a fully equipped kitchen, a full bathroom with a walk-in shower, a second floor master bedroom, and a tiny first floor bedroom with twin bunk beds (ideal for children), and a comfortable living room to enjoy the stunning sunsets over the bay.brbrOutside, you’ll find Adirondacks and a stone fire pit overlooking the ocean. A lush lawn with a stairway leading to a ragged shoreline which is a perfect place to hunt for sea glass, swim, or simply sit and enjoy the view.brbrWe encourage all guests to visit to view many more photos and to learn about the history and surrounds of this beloved retreat.brbrThings to ConsiderbrbrAs the reviews suggest,  Bober Cottage is thoughtfully organized with many cute touches. Please note, however, that its proportions are small. Some families love the scale because it encourages togetherness, but that is not to everyone's taste. Before booking please consider if 528 (charming) square feet would be right for you. brbrThe ceiling height in the master bedroom (second floor) is approx. 5'10—perfect for sitting and sleeping, but could be challenging if you are tall. The children's bedroom has a bunk bed that takes up most of the room. It is perfectly cozy for children, but not suitable for adults.brbrThe cottage décor includes family heirlooms. On the north side is a bronze nude figure sculpted by Christopher Cairns. Lazarus, the saint who miraculously came back to life, rises from a patch of grass and points toward the ocean.brbrThe natural surrounds of the cottage include animals. In addition to an array of birds, chipmunks, and friendly neighborhood dogs, it is not uncommon to see foxes, porcupines, and skunks.brbrAs with most properties that rely on wells, the water can be limited by rainfall. We ask guests to conserve water and report any issues with drips, leaks, or outages so they may be addressed immediately. brbrIf you are looking for a cookie-cutter hotel or resort experience, then Bober Cottage is not for you. It is ideal for those who appreciate an intimate setting within a few feet of the rocky coast, sunsets from a picture window, and a quaint cottage that has been cherished for three generations.brbrSorry, Pets are not allowed at this property.brbrBober Cottage does not have a washer and dryer, but there is a laundromat in Brunswick, just 20 minutes away.brbrBed types/descriptions:brFirst Floor- Small Bedroom with Twin Bunk Beds (Perfect for two children)brSecond Floor- Master Bedroom with Queen Bed (Most comfortable for sleeping and sitting, for the ceilings are low)brbrBathroom setup/description: brFirst Floor- Full Bath with Shower OnlybrbrAir Conditioning: NobrBeach/Water Access: Direct, on property via private stairs, rocky/pebbly shorelinebrBeach Towels: Not includedbrDeparture Cleaning: IncludedbrCable TV: No cable, Smart TV onlybrClosest Shopping Village: Brunswick, 20 min awaybrCoffee Maker: Yes, automatic dripbrDishwasher: NobrGrill: Gas Grill available, Propane providedbrHeat Source: Electric BaseboardbrInternet Access: Yes, Xfinity Cable Internet and WiFibrLinens & Bath Towels: Included, beds are made prior to guest arrival and towels remain in their sanitized packaging, placed on each bedbrLobster Pot: YesbrOutdoor Firepit: YesbrParking: 2 carsbrStairs to Water: YesbrTrash Removal: Included, picked up weekly (for multi-week stays) or upon departurebrTV: Smart TV in Living RoombrUsable Fireplaces: NobrWasher & Dryer: No, but there is a laundromat in Brunswick, just 20 minutes away.brWater Frontage: Direct ocean frontagebrWater Source: Well water with filtration/softener system, bottled drinking water recommended
