Don`t forget to pack your outdoor essentials. Bug spray and long sleeves/pants are usually a good idea any time of year. At 3,000 feet in elevation, we are close to the stars at night, to the clouds by day and we are witness to gorgeous sunrises and sunsets all year long. When the summer heat is burning up the low lands we have fresh, cool breezes and even sweater weather in the evenings. We look out 40 miles to Mt. Mitchell in the north, ten mountain ranges to where the sun sets in the west and 60 miles to a flat line in the south. We are surrounded by nature, astronomy and meteorology, yet we are a short 35 minute drive to Biltmore House and the excellent restaurants of downtown Asheville, and 20 minutes from Black Mountain and its quaint shops, restaurants, and gigantic grocery stores. We hear the wind in the leaves and catch the sweet smell of Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel in the springtime; we pick wild blackberries in the summer and listen to songbirds all day. We frequently encounter deer, wild turkey and even bobcats, yet we live in a modern, luxurious home with a gourmet kitchen, satellite TV, instant hot water, wonderful beds and mattresses, and windows everywhere to frame the beauty that is all around us.
