It is a beautiful and scenic river full of waterfalls, deep pools, and slow glassy runs. The river is stocked with Brook, Brown, and Rainbow trout, but Browns and Rainbows seem to be the majority of the stream born population. The area between Turtle Pond Bridge (approximately 5 miles from Highlands) and Gold Mine Bridge (approximately 8 miles from Highlands) offers numerous pull-offs with easy access to the river. -Tuckaseegee River: The Tuckaseegee or “Tuck” is the largest river in the Highlands-Cashiers area. This is a dam controlled river with power generation dams located on the east and west forks of the river upstream of the “delayed harvest” section. From October 1st until June1st, the 6-mile section from Western Carolina University to Highway 441 in Dillsboro is super stocked with large hatchery fish. During this period the regulations are catch and release only. During early Spring, 30 to 40 fish days are not unusual. From June 1st to October 1st normal general trout water regulations prevail allowing anglers to keep seven fish any size and quantities of fish decline rather quickly. Use caution as water levels may change at any time. For flow schedules, call Nantahala Power Company-Tuckaseegee Flow: (866) 332-5253. From Highlands, take Highway 64 west toward Franklin 18 miles. Turn right on 441 north to bridge over Tuckaseegee at Dillsboro. Take 1st right past bridge on River Road Waterfalls Nearby: Bridal Veil Falls: *MOST POPULAR AND UNUSUAL FALLS IN THE SOUTH Bridal Veil Falls, Highlands Rd, Highlands, NC 28741 ( 10 minute drive) Dry Falls: 8.7 mile stretch of the river that eventually ends with Cullasaja Falls. Dry Falls flows over an overhanging bluff which allows visitors to walk under the falls and remain relatively dry when the waterflow is low, hence its name. *Visitors will get wet if the waterflow is high! Drive 3.25 miles on US 64 West to the parking area on left. A pleasant walk down stone steps leads to a path that goes behind the waterfall. Here the Cullasaja River projects over a cliff, allowing one to walk behind the falls without getting wet, hence the name. There is a $3.00 per car charge for parking. Whitewater Falls: Discover the East’s King of Waterfalls. Watch it cascade over massive rock pillars and drop 411 feet to the river below. Use extreme caution near the top of the falls. It’s worth the 23.4 miles drive from Highlands via HWY 64 East to the crossroads in Cashiers, then turn right onto HWY 107 South. Signage will direct you to the falls from HWY 107. (~35 minute drive) It’s just far enough from the beaten path that you will have privacy, but close enough that family and friends can experience shopping, the symphony, cultural museums, and fine dining. Shopping: Park and Walk is an unheralded benefit of life in a little town with a vibrant downtown Main Street.
