Popham Beach Family-Friendly Home

Phippsburg, Maine, United States

There are few places on the Eastern seaboard where one can stand on the deck of an oceanside house and see nothing but salt marsh, beach and the Atlantic -- no houses, no people, nothing but solitude and the sounds of waves, gulls, and Sequin’s fog horn. Yassou (a Greek salutation meaning “welcome”), sitting on a high, granite bluff overlooking the Maine coast, the sand beaches of Popham and Seawall, and the open Atlantic at Casco Bay, is such a place.brbrYassou is a large and comfortable family home filled with warmth and character. It's a perfect place to escape, unwind, and relax with family members. There are great books and a wealth of board games to while-away-the-hours, and wifi for those who need to stay connected. The 9-acre property overlooks the tidal Morse River and the 4-mile stretch of sand beaches known as Popham and Seawall – formed where the mouth of the Kennebec River meets the Atlantic Ocean. brbrThere are 3 structures on the property – a main house and two out buildings. The house is 2,500 square-feet, spread over four levels, and built to take advantage of the stunning ocean views. There are 5 bedrooms. brbrThe ground floor has three bedrooms: one with a queen bed, one with two twins, and one with a twin bed. This floor has a full bath, a laundry area with washer and dryer.brbrThe second floor, with its ocean views, houses the main living and dining areas with an open floor plan and a vaulted ceiling. The living room area is centered around a large cozy fireplace on the northern end of the main floor, with the dining area and the open-shelved kitchen with a breakfast bar on the south side. brbrOutside decks surround three sides of this level with a screened-in porch off the kitchen. Three sliding-glass doors provide easy access to the deck from this floor. There is also a full bath and master bedroom on this floor, with access from the bedroom to the quiet north side deck for morning coffee as the sun rises. brbrA loft above the main floor leads to another bedroom and stairs leading up to “The Tower,” which is a treat unto itself. Perched 35’ high, The Tower commands a 360° bird’s eye view of the surrounding countryside and ocean. Five adults can comfortably sit in The Tower, which is a stunning place to watch the sunrise or sunset.brbrTwo out-buildings complete the structures on the property. “Blossom,” nestled in the pines just beneath the main house, is a rustic bunkhouse. “The Gallery” is a workshop and storage shed just east of the main house.brbrCome and enjoy the many pleasures of Yassou and nearby Popham Beach on the coast of Maine.brbrbr br

Cabin

Renovated 3-BR boathouse built atop water in quiet cove; private float & trails

Phippsburg, Maine, United States

Historic, newly renovated, and secluded cabin with 3 bedrooms, this cottage provides everything you need for a quintessentially Maine vacation. The Boathouse literally sits atop a secluded cove in Casco Bay, and features access to the ocean via a private float, as well as a private trail system on 21 acres. The cottage is private, and quiet. brbrBuilt in 1920 by local craftsmen for Wall Street stockbroker Herbert Pomeroy Brown, this magnificent structure straddles Long Cove - known locally as Smugglers’ Cove for its colorful past - and features a 30 x 30 living room with an imposing stone fireplace, three bedrooms, a full kitchen, screen porch and laundry. Immediate access to Casco Bay is afforded by the property’s float. Our 12-foot tides mean that at low tide the cove becomes a sandy beach and wading location. A stream (locally called Devil’s Drean) runs through the property and under the Boathouse where it enters the ocean. brbrTwo other cottages on the same property are nearby if guests want to add one or three bedrooms, and baths and kitchens. brbrSaturday 4 pm to 10 am weekly rental.brbrKayaks and paddleboards are available for rental from a local company that delivers and picks up. A private trail system on our 21 acres (see map in photos) connects to a trail system maintained by the adjacent resort.brbrGuests share - with one other 3 BR cottage 80 yds away - access to the float and a small sandy beach that forms at low tide, as well as to the laundry and bicycles found in the shed. The newly built, signed trail system affords access to the property's 21 acres and to nearby lookouts.brbrThe cottage is at the end of a dead-end gravel road, and is private and quiet.brbrGuests' primary contact will be with a local property manager, but our summer home is literally down the road and we have a welcoming attitude to new visitors, while respecting guests' privacy.brbrPlay golf or tennis or dine at the adjacent Sebasco Harbor Resort.brbrWeekly linens and cleaning, high-speed internet; smart TV on request; all new kitchens, baths, and beds..brbrOur cottages are located in the Sebasco area of Phippsburg (“coastal Maine at its prettiest”), about an hour’s drive from Portland. brbrPhippsburg was named as one of the ten best cities in America ”to go off the grid” in March 2022, ranking Phippsburg alongside Carmel, California; Aspen, Colorado; and Sedona, Arizona. The website Livability.com had this to say about Phippsburg:brbr“This is coastal Maine at its prettiest, with picturesque wooden boat houses standing atop thick timber stilts plummeting into the Atlantic. This is the kind of place [where] you . . . chow down on the best lobster you’ll ever put in your mouth. It’s . . . a great place to ‘go dark’ for a bit.” (https://bit.ly/PhippsburgME) brbrAt the southern tip of the Phippsburg peninsula, you can immerse yourself in American history by walking through American-Revolution-era batteries at Fort Baldwin, Civil War-era Fort Popham, and the site of the 1607 Popham Colony, a failed British colony which preceded the Mayflower’s landing at Plymouth. Play tennis or a round of golf at nearby Sebasco Harbor Resort, or go on a beautiful hike to Seawall Beach at Morse Mountain. Experience quintessential Maine’s fresh lobster and oysters at one of the peninsula’s waterfront restaurants. Take a stroll through galleries, local shops, and the Maine Maritime Museum in the historic shipbuilding town of Bath, just 20 minutes away. Or, head back towards the bigger town of Brunswick for dinner and a concert (30 min), check out the outlet shops of Freeport (45 min), walk through historic Boothbay Harbor (55 min), or explore the bustling port and nightlife in Portland (1 hr). brbr LOCAL ATTRACTIONSbr• Things To Do in Phippsburg - (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g40818-Activities-Phippsburg_Maine.html) . brbrSome of our favorites are listed below.brbr• Popham Beach - Maine’s largest public beach, 15 minutes away https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g40818-d103734-Reviews-Popham_Beach_State_Park-Phippsburg_Maine.html brbr• Tottman Cove Beach - Phippsburg’s town beach, Phippsburg residents and renters only, 2 miles. Spacious Waterfront Summer Home with Swimming, Kayaking, and Sunsets

Phippsburg, Maine, United States

This four-bedroom house sits high above the New Meadows River, with strong wi-fi throughout. Relax on the large decks with an expansive view of this wide, salt-water, tidal river and enjoy the eagles flying overhead. Ducks, herons, cormorants, osprey, and eagle swim in or fly above the river, sailboats zip along, and lobster boats pass back and forth, trailed by sea-gulls. If you're lucky you might even see a seal pop its head up as it swims along. Glimpses of the Basin can also be seen from the side deck. Play frisbee or badminton on the front lawn, wander down the path through pine trees and blueberry bushes to the water, picking blueberries and raspberries along the way (in season). Enjoy the view from the rocky coast or walk down the dirt road to a communal cove with easy wading and swimming access. We have a double sit-on-top kayak and two single sit-on-top kayaks available for you to take out to explore the river with the osprey and seals. The combination of lawn, woods, path, and rocky coast make the property a children's wonderland. The house has a beautiful dining/living room space. The dining room is perfect for large family dinners, with seating for up to 8 at the dining room table. The living room has two comfortable couches, a flat-screened television, and a working fireplace. The well-stocked kitchen is comfortable, with ample counter space, dishwasher, and microwave. Our family has spent many years cooking sea-food feasts and baked deserts, and so the kitchen is stocked with a good selection of cooking utensils for these items, including a large pot suitable for lobsters or steaming clams. The first floor has a gorgeous, airy master bedroom that is down a long hall from the rest of the house, offering privacy and separation from the goings-on in the living room/dining area. The master bedroom has a cathedral ceiling, wooden beams, and an office area that overlooks the New Meadows River, as well as its own doors out to a small patio that is ringed with wildflowers and has views of the river. The first-floor bathroom has a tub/shower with a sky-light above it, so that you can shower with views of pine trees and sky. The toilet and sink are separated from the shower area with a sliding door, so that it is possible for a person to take a shower without blocking bathroom access. The second floor of the house is quaint and rustic, with wood paneling throughout. There are three bedrooms on the second floor (two with water views). The largest second-floor bedroom has a King sized bed and windows on two sides, including a river view. There is a 2nd second-floor bedroom with two twin beds and a view of the river, and a 3rd second-floor bedroom with two twin beds and a small nook with children's play items. While this 3rd bedroom does not overlook the river, its windows offer lovely views of the Maine woods. The second-floor bathroom has a toilet, sink, and shower, but no tub. Throughout, the house is full of rustic charm. The house sits along a dirt road just past the paved section, making it both secluded and with easy access to the surrounding area, including the towns of Bath and Brunswick (both of which offer shopping and many restaurant options, both inexpensive and upscale), and the beautiful state parks Popham Beach and Reid State Park. Freeport and its outlet shopping, Portland with its fine dining and museums, and the art galleries of Wiscasset are all within an hour drive. You can spend the day exploring and come home to enjoy a gorgeous sunset from the west-facing deck or the dining area's large windows. The house has a washer and dryer, wireless Internet access, one flat-screened TV and cable, and is well stocked with games. There is a small selection of family-friendly DVDs and a DVD player, and an old record player with the family's record collection of jazz, classical, classic rock, and musical cast albums that you are welcome to enjoy.
