The Magic House - Walk Everywhere!

Portland, Oregon, United States

Peaceful neighborhood, walk everywhere! Safety is our top priority. brbrThe Magic House, circa 1909, is in the heart of Hawthorne's charming restaurant and boutique district: 3 blocks to SE Hawthorne & SE Division, 15 min to the airport, 10 min to Downtown and the Convention Center, 2 blocks to the Hawthorne Theatre. Walk to Powell's books on Hawthorne.brbrThe Magic House and Magic Barn were Todji's sculpture studio for 17 years, and we have done the restoration ourselves. We hope that you enjoy her unique character, color, up-cycled furnishings and artistry.brbrWalk 3 blocks to rental bikes and 2 blocks to four bus stops. Park in driveway for easy load in and out, and there is ample free street parking with no time limits. We have a fenced yard for pets. Walking through the residential neighborhood to get to the commercial streets is lovely with beautiful vintage homes and lush gardens.brbrWe want to accommodate the needs of your large or small group at The Magic House and Magic Barn. The Magic Barn is located in the backyard and can be booked separately in conjunction with The Magic House for larger groups. brbrPlease see the Magic Barn: Vrbo 1106117brbrThe Magic House was a neglected rental when Todji first rented a room in 2000. He purchased the house in 2004 when banks were giving loans to self-employed artists, and he restored it for 17 years while renting rooms to other artists and friends.brbrTodji painted the outside of The Magic House over three summers. The floors are worn and the 1909 stairs are creaky with stories! We can use our imaginations as to the similarities that everyone was thinking about while going up and down those stairs for over a hundred years...brbrThis is not a real estate investor style of vacation rental home. We are self employed artists and we have done all the restoration work ourselves. We encourage you to book with us if you wish to have a local, artistic, cultural experience. This is not Portlandia. This is a real slice of Portland culture that inspired Portlandia. The Magic House has been a hub for Portland artists and musicians for 3 decades.brbrWhile restoring The Magic House, Todji built a career producing bronze sculpture monuments for US cities, and private collectors. The sculpture collection in the house rotates to different galleries and exhibitions.brbrYour onsite host Hobie is a professional writer and novelist. He is available for friendly help, and also to respect privacy. Please text him if you need something onsite.brbrWe give cleaning and maintenance work at the Magic House to community artists.brbrWe list the claw foot tub on VRBO as a Spa Whirlpool (which is the only check box option to describe it) so that hot bath people can find their way to a hot clawfoot tub bath at the Magic House. Enjoy! brbrThe backyard is shared space with Magic Barn guests, your hosts, gardeners, maintenance people, etc. Please exchange friendly hellos and respect privacy.brbrThere is driveway parking for one car. The driveway may be temporarily reserved for maintenance services when necessary. brbrThere are orange rental bikes three blocks away at SE Hawthorne and 40th St, in front of New Seasons health food grocery store.brbrThere are bus stops going in the four directions within three blocks of our front door. Downtown by bus is approximately 15 minutes. Use Trimet's website to easily plan bus and light rail trips. brbrTo get from the airport to our house (10 miles) by public transportation you can take a Max train at the airport and then transfer once to a Trimet bus, in approximately 52 minutes. brbrWe are very centrally located, and along with that convenience comes audible and visible street traffic. We are located off of a fairly busy four lane street. We have one mustard colored bedroom on the backside of the house that has two queen mattresses which is fairly distant from the sound of the street in case you have any light sleepers in your group.brbrProximity to the street has been fine for some guests, and not ideal for others. A previous guest at The Magic House wrote this in their review: Description of the house warns about the sound of traffic from a busy street, but we didn't notice. Neighborhood is safe and clean. Very few of our guests have had issue with the street proximity. We recommend the mustard colored room for light sleepers.brbrThe Magic Barn is set back a good distance from the street and has been described in past reviews as tranquil, quiet and serene. brbrWe are located in one of the most beautiful, and hippest neighborhoods in Portland, and we have always felt comfortable walking in our neighborhood during the day and night.brbrThe Magic House has one king bed, four queen beds in frames, two twin air mattresses, a queen floor mattress, a full bed in the dining room, and the living room has a sofa and can accommodate a queen air mattress. All are pictured in our photos.brbrWe charge $30 per night, per guest, after the first 4 guests. VRBO includes that in your total when you enter more than 4 guests in the guest count.brbrSafety is our top priority. We require our guests to write us a message with a little information about themselves and their trip before we send the door code. We hope that this will help provide a safer environment for guests, neighbors, and hosts. Please share a little information if you wish to book.brbrWith the center of both SE Hawthorne St and SE Division St within 3 blocks, there is an abundance of restaurants, grocery stores, neighborhood strolling, boutique browsing and hiking options within walking distance.brbrSee a movie, or just step in to witness the beautiful and iconic McMenamin's Bagdad theater, accompanied by an incredible restaurant/bar/pool hall in the back called the Back Stage Bar, at SE 37th and Hawthorne. It will give you a feel for classic Portland!brbrWe are minutes from Mt Tabor park which has a lovely forest with walking trails sitting upon a dormant volcano, and we are 45 minutes to the spectacular 600 foot tall Multnomah waterfall in the gorgeous Columbia River Gorge scenic area.brbrDivision Street is three blocks away, and is a recently renovated strip with modern architecture, new restaurants and boutique shops that will give you a feel for the freshest vibe Portland has to offer.brbrHere is a list to get you started:brbrRestaurants:brbr(The options are endless but here are a few popular favorites!)brbrServing Food Late - Sapphire Hotel at 50th and Hawthorne, Romantic and sexy atmosphere- great for late night drinks and gourmet bar food.brbrStumptown Coffee Roasters- SE 45th and Division, Classic Great Portland CoffeebrbrMy Vice- Brunch one block south on Lincoln and SE Cesar E Chavez Blvd.brbrHarlow- SE 37th and Division, Hip and Healthy, great for lunch, or fresh veggie juice.brbrPor Que No- 46th and Hawthorne, Wildly popular Mexican with a great playful decor. It is a 45 minute drive from here to enter the gorge. Below are the names of hikes that we love and recommend. Check the website to find a hike with a distance and fitness level that suits you. For those who are visiting the gorge for the first time, I recommend visiting the most spectacular, and also the most touristicated, 600 foot Multnomah Falls. For those who want a challenging half day hike you can begin at Multnomah Falls and hike a loop called the Franklin Ridge Loop. Cozy, hideaway retreat in the trees

Portland, Oregon, United States

This is a lovely two bedroom apartment in a fourplex with its own private deck overlooking a grove of lush trees. It is well insulated from sound and temperature, close to major bus lines, and a five minute drive to PSU, OHSU and downtown. The apartment is close to the South Waterfront, several parks, and nearby shopping centers and restaurants. It is practically downtown, yet situated on a quiet street with no outlet. Bring your bike and store it safely on your private deck.brbrThis spacious, cozy home away from home is completely furnished with very comfortable beds. The kitchen has just about everything you'd need to cook all your meals. The surroundings are park like, with trees providing shade in the summer. In winter, when leaves are off the trees, there's a view through to the Willamette River (and lots of moss and ivy!). Comfortable outdoor chairs on the deck invite you to sip your morning coffee or enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. There is a reserved off-street parking spot right near the front door.brbrLiving room: Lots of windows. Smart TV. Coffee table. Access to private balcony with outdoor chairs and coffee table. brbrKitchen: Circular table with sturdy chairs seating up to 4. 4 burner stove and oven. Fully stocked kitchen with dishes, cookware, silverware, some Tupperware, spices, oil, and coffee. Washer and dryer. Full sized fridge. brbrBathroom: Tile shower with bathtub. Cabinet with some extra storage. brbrBedrooms: Queen sized beds, closets with hangers, and dressers for your clothesbrbr____________________________________________brbrOTHER DETAILS TO NOTE: brbrI have learned over time that every VRBO is different and every guest's expectations are *very* different. It is my goal to make sure that I am as transparent as possible up front so that you can make the best choice for yourself on where you would like to stay. brbrPET POLICY: I've recently begun accepting pets, as scary of a risk that is for me! All pets must be approved in advance. You must confirm that the animal has no history of property destruction, indoor urination/defecation, aggression, or excessive noise. I expect you to have the animal with you or crated when you're not home. In order to maintain an allergen-low environment for other guests, I have our cleaners do deep cleans after every animal stays there and hire a carpet / upholstery cleaner if necessary. Any undisclosed pet will result in a large penalty. FEES: Dogs and cats: 14 days or less: $100 // 15 days or more: $200. This fee does not cover any damages caused by the pet that result in excessive cleaning or repairs brbrESAs / Service animals: If you have an ESA animal please send me a copy of the paperwork including the letter from your healthcare provider. If you have a service animal trained to help you with a disability, I will be asking you the following legally allowable questions: 1) Is the service animal required because of a disability 2) What work or task has the animal been trained to perform (Your disability does not need to be disclosed)brbrNOISE: No excessive / sustained noise allowed. No parties. No yelling. Quiet hours are 10pm to 8am. This building is well insulated, but you do have neighbors above you and beside you. You may likely hear muffled voices, muffled music, occasional muffled dog barks, and people coming and going from the building in the shared stairwell. You may also see other tenants on their (separate) balconies. Also, with the doors and windows closed, you will not hear the highway. However, when you open the doors, you will hear the far-off sound of highway noise -- not individual cars or trucks (more like the ocean ;-))brbrNO SMOKING: No smoking anywhere on the property, not even the balcony. Smoke travels to other tenants' apartments.brbrCLEANING: Sometimes a cleaner does a poor job and it catches me (and you!) off guard. Please let me know if the cleaner missed something(s) important and allow us to fix the issue. I assure you that we strongly value cleanliness and any lack of cleanliness is not on purpose. I do want to advise, however, that this apartment was built in the 1970s and there is only so much you can do about regular wear and tear aside from an apartment remodel. So, I please ask that you keep this in mind when booking. I do not have luxury rentals – just cozy, clean, lived in spaces.
