Recreational activities abound: local hikes (Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park, Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment, Pettengill Farm, Freeport Conservation Trust trails); kayaking (L.L. Bean Outdoor Recreation Center, Wolfe’s Neck Center); snowshoeing and Nordic skiing (Pineland Farms); scenic biking; and visiting Popham Beach. The tourist attraction (open May - Oct) includes fascinating exhibits about the history, ecology, geology of the Desert, activities for kids, a train ride, mini golf, and much more. Campground guests enjoy free access to the dunes after hours, and discounted tickets for mini golf and general admission for daytime visits. brbrbrbrThe entire experience is designed around helping you unwind from your busy life, slip in to a sense of stillness and wonder, and wake up (again) to the magic of being a human. You have 2 dressers for your jeans and t-shirts (all the wardrobe you'll need). In the GUEST ROOM, your guests or children will feel cozy in the built-in twin beds with a dresser. They have 2 bookshelves with an assortment of summer reading. There is a 'napping blanket' in every room just in case the need arises. The BATHROOM provides your basic needs with a sink, a toilet, and a hot shower. In the LIVING ROOM, there is a double sofa bed and 2 rustic cottage chairs. A picture window overlooks the bay and evening sunsets. For those cool days, you can make a fire in the glass-front woodstove, or just turn on the built-in propane heater. A five-to-ten-minute walk will get you to downtown Freeport and the L.L. Bean flagship store, shops, and restaurants. The trails and rocky coast of Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park and the beach at Winslow Park are less than a 15-minute drive away.brA gravel pathway from the driveway brings you to a back porch and entrance to your part of the house. The back porch gives you a view of a field with robins, american goldfinches, and the occasional cardinal. The entrance room has storage shelves with board games and other items. An original wooden door brings you to the kitchen. (Old doors sometimes stick, especially in the summer, so you might have to give it an extra push or pull)brThe modern kitchen is fully outfitted for your convenience with dishes, cookware and cooking utensils, and flatware. There is a dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, and a stove with an induction cooktop. The kitchen also has brand-new appliances.brbrWe live in the attached house next door, and share a driveway and patio. We are friendly :) and always happy to provide suggestions during your visit to the area.brbrOther Notes: The house abuts the Amtrak Downeaster line, which swiftly passes a few times daily. This cabin comes supplied with linens (sheets, down comforter, towels for four, and pillows), linens for the sleeper sofa (sheets, pillows, and blankets), and two sleeping pads and pillows if you have additional guests (i.e. kids) sleeping on the floor. The cabin also has an outdoor seating area with four Adirondack chairs, a fire ring (w/ integrated grill), a small picnic table, and bistro lights that make for a magical outdoor experience.brbrbrbrThe cabin is located in the recently renovated campground next to the Desert of Maine, an iconic tourist attraction established in 1926. The campground is small, quiet, and serene, surrounded by tall northern pines at the edge of the Desert’s rolling sand dunes which were deposited there at the end of the last ice age. The tourist attraction (open May - Oct) includes fascinating exhibits about the history, ecology, geology of the Desert, activities for kids, a train ride, mini golf, and much more. Campground guests enjoy free access to the dunes after hours, and discounted tickets for mini golf and general admission for daytime visits. brbrbrbrThe entire experience is designed around helping you unwind from your busy life, slip in to a sense of stillness and wonder, and wake up (again) to the magic of being a human.
