New cottage open for 2024!! Shackford Cove Cottage is a charming cottage with the best view of Shackford Cove in Eastport! It features a relaxing entertaining space on the first floor and two bedrooms and a bath on the second. It was built as a sardine workers' housing dating to the turn of the last century. Converted to a vacation home thirty years ago, it was just updated to make a comfortable vacation home for your stay.brbrShackford Cove Cottage features unmatched views of Shackford Cove, with an ever changing view from deep water to just a trickle, always teaming with shore birds and the wrecks of ships from when Shackford Cove was home to four shipyards!brbrThe home is one open space on the first floor, with glass sliding doors facing the deck with Shackford Cove beyond. The kitchen is fully furnished with a large fridge, gas stove, lots of cookware, and handmaid pine cabinets. The second floor is accessed by a steep, low ceilinged staircase typical for this era of home, but has two large, bright bedrooms for you to enjoy. The larger bedroom has been called the ‘captains Quarters’ since its inception, with a brand new queen bed, a nice sized storage closet, bureau, and a vintage rocking chair. The secondary bedroom pays homage to the previous owner with his collection of birding photographs as well as his photographs of Eastport from a decade ago. It has a queen bed with a memory foam mattress and several wall hooks for hanging. The upstairs bath is tucked in under the eaves with a tub shower combination and a small vanity as well as several storage cabinets. brbrThe home has a propane heater on the first floor, an electric radiator in the bathroom, as well as two space heaters in the bedrooms. There are stand fans as well for the occasional warm day! There is no air conditioning.brbrThis listing is only for the Shackford Cove Cottage by the water. The Shackford House directly on Water St. is a separate home and not available for guests.brbrYou'll love staying at Shackford Cove Cottage because it's less than a 5-minute walk from downtown Eastport! It appears to be a driveway with the only marking being a pile of railroad ties defining the corner. We promise that is it- in true New England fashion the snow plow took out the street sign years ago and it never got replaced! Proceed down the street and you will see the ocean straight ahead and the cottage on the left. Eagles Bluff doesn’t have any designated parking spots due to it’s location at the head of a street. During non-winter months, there is space in front of the door to the cottage for 1 vehicle and there is plenty of free parking up on Water Street. Vehicles cannot be parked on Eagle St during winter months to allow for the city to sand and plow.brbrEagles Bluff Cottage is dog friendly only! Please bring 2 dogs maximum for your stay! brbrEagles Bluff Cottage was built at the turn of the century to house sardine factory workers as the population of Eastport was exploding to serve this industry. Eagle street itself was put in 1904 to serve the largest sardine factory in America at the time, all that is left is the pilings you see out in the water in front of the house, though the walls and floors of the house were insulated with cardboard boxes from the factory and we have saved some and framed them at the house. The weird thing though is that this isn’t the original house that was built at 1 Eagle Street, we have aerial photos from WWII era and a different cottage is here. We can only surmise that this house was moved onto this lot when something happened to the original home. We know that the cottage is old, both due to the original cardboard boxes as insulation and from the fact that all the framing materials were reused from earlier structures- all the ceiling rafters used to be roof rafters for instance. Some of the main beams in the basement have fire damage which makes me think they may have come from the great fire of 1886brbrbrEagles Bluff is a high bluff just south of the main business district overlooking Quoddy Cove and Campobello Island to the east and Shackford Cove to the South.
