The Elwha River had 2 dams that were removed in 2012 & 2014. When that happened, 100 years of built up silt washed down to the Straits of San Juan de Fuca. Over the past few years all that sand got redeposited against the shores of Freshwater Bay at the Elwha River Mouth, forming over 150 new acres of black sand beach & driftwood. Before this occurrence, the beach was nearly impossible to walk over due to it being covered with cobble rock. Now the new black sand beach grows & grows every day, constantly charging its shape, & river flow direction, which draws more & more visitors to witness this amazing phenomenon & enjoy this spectacular place.brThe Duck Pond is located on the largest of two freshwater ponds, separated from the Elwha River by a Dike that is privately owned but open to the public for beach access. The beach in front of the pond is also privately owned by those along this stretch. The Duck Pond property is just under 4 acres including a large 1.25 acres grass lawn, fresh water pond, & house, & almost 2.5 acres of private black sand & driftwood strewn beach, which the public often use as well. At present, dogs are welcome on the beach as long as the owners keep them on a leash at all times & pick up after them, but this privilege could be easily revoked at any time by the owners of the Dike & beach if these dog walkers do not keep them on a leash at all times or clean up after themselves. brbrNO PET POLICY:brAbsolutely NO pets allowed due to severe allergies, wear & tear & the difficulty to keep the grounds dog poop clear which can cause disease & harm this fragile environment & wildlife. brbrSURROUNDING AREA & WHAT TO SEE:brThe Duck Pond is well located to most of what the Olympic National Park & surrounding areas have to offer. You are only a few minutes away to start your adventure on the Discovery Trail which is just off of Place Road & the hwy 112, or up Race Road & up the mountain in town to Hurricane Ridge, or west to Crescent Lake which is only 15 minutes away, Sol Doc & the Hoh Rain Forest are just beyond there, or you can drive up to 2 hours along the Scenic hwy 112 west to the furthest westerly point of the Continental United States to Cape Flattery & Lake Ozette where you walk the boardwalks to the Pacific Ocean. You can reach almost anything within an easy day trip & hikes in all directions. brSequim & Port Townsend are within 30 - 60 minutes away to the east as well, where you can explore more of what each area has to offer, farms, cideries, wineries, breweries, Dungeness Spit & Recreational Park, & historic downtown Port Townsend, great restaurants & shops, & Chimacum Valley, for farms, cideries, wineries & shops, etc. These areas are rich with agriculture & historic tales.brThe town of Port Angeles is only a 10-15 minute drive east into town for groceries, bike, boat & ski rentals, restaurants, bars, breweries, cideries, wineries, shops & the Coho ferry to BC. brIn addition, Victoria, Vancouver Island BC to the north is a short 90 minute ferry ride across the Straits of San Juan de Fuca where you can explore some more, go to gorgeous Butchart Gardens, drive & explore this enormous Canadian island, or enjoy High Tea at the Empress Hotel right there in Victoria Harbor. Just make sure to bring your passport, & make your ferry reservations there & back to secure a place in line. If you choose to go over by foot, no reservations are necessary, & ground transportation once you get there is easy & efficient. brEasy access to everything, yet you feel worlds away at the Duck Pond without the hustle & bustle of city life. SOLITUDE! 10 acres on Elwha River- Olympic Park Mountains & River Views

Port Angeles, Washington, United States

See end of message for pet (dog) brand fishing guide information.brbrRecent review - 7/15/2019. Beautiful view, comfortable housebrWe had a fabulous time staying at this house. Great location with easy access to lots of hiking (Lake Crescent, Sol Duc, Hurricane Ridge). Owners were great. My dad and my son went fishing with Rick and had a great time. The house was super comfortable for the 7 of us. The kitchen was well stocked and the view was amazing. We hope to make it back someday and would highly recommend this house!brbrHouse and Property Description:br River House, a 2672 sf home on a high bank above the Elwha River, features views of the River and the distant snow-topped mountains that are a photographer's delight, an ever-changing vista of light and shadow.brbrThe spacious great room/dining area/kitchen is lit by a three-story prow window and invites day's end relaxation with television, wood stove and comfortable leather seating. The dining area features seating for six around a large teak table. The modern kitchen is well-equipped for meal preparation. brbrThe Sockeye Suite a light-filled room with an en-suite bath, king size bed, television and walk-in closet, encompasses the second floor, assuring the greatest privacy. A balcony off the bedroom is a fine place to take your morning coffee. The adjacent Steelhead Room, a cozy spot with a comfortable twin bed, shares a bath with the Sockeye Suite.brbrOn the main floor, a third bedroom features a king- size bed, television, a walk-in closet and an adjacent designated bath. Waterfowl Room takes its theme and colors from exquisitely detailed duck prints and decoys. This room features double sliding doors allowing easy outdoor viewing of the River and mountains. brbrThe fourth bedroom is the striking Upland Game Birds room featuring images of pheasants and grouse, walk in closet, unique color scheme and furniture, a queen size bed, and a designated bathroom.brbrA path down to the River allows a close-up view of the changes in the water flow since the the Glines and Elwha dams were removed in2014.brbrWe are blessed with occasional and unpredictable visits from deer and the Herrick Road elk herd, as well as cougar and bear spottings.brbrAcross the River is the Olympic Hot Springs Road entrance to the Olympic National Park. This entry leads to a recently built overlook to the former site of the Glines Dam. (At present, access to the Park via this entrance is limited due to winter storm damage.)brbrLake Crescent is about 15 minutes west on Highway 101. The Lodge has a covered porch and outdoor seating fine for sipping your tea, coffee, wine etc and viewing a stunning 624 ft deep lake, recently voted the best in Washington. There are easy flat walking paths on the grounds as well. A mile-long trail leads to the 90 foot Marymere Waterfall.brbrOlympic Raft and Kayaking is literally right down the road. Harbinger Winery's Tasting Room is about 6 miles east on 101, on the right side. Right next door is Adventures in Kayaking. brbrAdditional activities on the Olympic Peninsula:brhttp://www.clallam.org/outdoor-adventure-1.html & thebrNearby Sight attachment on your welcome email.sbrbrFishing & Guiding:br Salmon abound in the rivers and ocean in this area with trout and halibut coming in second place. brbrThe Elwha River salmon are recovering their former number since the Elwha and Glines Dams were removed four years ago. As of October, 2018, 5,300 chinook are expected to return this fall to spawn, 15,000 rainbow trout were counted in September and bull trout and summer steelhead numbers are multiplying apace. The Elwha will open to sport fishing in July, 2021 at the earliest. River House has generous frontage on the River that is available to our guests for fishing when it reopens. Rick knows the River like the back of his hand and will be available for scheduled lessons for those new to salmon and trout fishing. br brSilver salmon and king salmon are running in the rivers from September (provided there is good rainfall during the month) to February. Steelhead are available from November to the end of March. Salt water salmon fishing season runs from July 1st to August 15th. brbrRick guides river drift- boat fishing and can arrange for charter ocean fishing. He also provides guide services for the genetically distinct Beardslee trout found only in nearby Lake Crescent, a most beautiful place. The Beardslee trout season starts June 1st and ends October 31st. They are catch and release only and no license is needed as Lake Crescent is part of the Olympic National Park. brScenic drift boat trips on the west end rivers are available. A minimum of two and maximum of three persons are necessary to book a drift boat fishing trip and a minimum of a two night stay at River House is also needed. Scenic drift boat trips can accommodate 1 adult and 2 children, ages 8 and up or 2-3 adults. A minimum of two persons is needed for fishing Lake Crescent.brText Rick for further information at 360 477-1715.brbrPet Policy and FeebrWe welcome a maximum of two dogs per stay. The dogs must be a year old or older, be neutered or spayed, and treated with flea and tick control such as Frontline or Advantage 3 days prior to arrival. Please groom (brush) your dog shortly before your arrival. A dog bed might be helpul to make your dog feel at home and a crate is strongly recommended if you plan to leave your dog in the house when you go sightseeing or dining out. Please remember that the River House area is heavily wooded and near the Olympic National Park. If your dog gets loose, it may be a difficult, perhaps impossible, task to find him. In addition, coyotes, and cougars are commonplace and the occasional bear has been known to visit. The Herrick Road elk herd visits the field at random. Large antlered buck guard the herd and might react to an excited dog. Please take this seriously and save yourself (and us) some heartache by keeping your pet on a leash and using a collar with contact information on it. brbr We welcome your pet but can continue to do this only if care of the pet and the house and grounds is attended to.brbrThe pet fee is $100 per stay for one dog and $150 a stay for two dogs.
