Sunset Serenity is an incredible home! It's located on a private bluff overlooking Lake Michigan and there are truly spectacular views of Lake Michigan for miles from the home. The home features a wrap-around deck and second detached deck with great lake views from all points. There are also posts and a hammock available for relaxing in a hammock while watching the waves of Lake Michigan from the bluff. brbrThe home is located in Frankfort just north of and within walking distance of the famous Congregational Summer Assembly (CSA) area between Crystal Lake and Lake Michigan. The location of the home, sitting on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, provides for a great view of the lake in all its splendor as well as a base for exploring Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, the Point Betsie Lighthouse, Crystal Lake, the Leelanau Peninsula, and the charming beach towns of Frankfort, Beulah, Empire, and Glen Arbor. This home just off of M-22 truly provides for a one-of-a-kind and forever memorable vacation!brbrIt should be also noted that the area is not just for the summer, but it also very beautiful in the Spring and Fall. In the Spring, there are many varieties of wildflowers in bloom and the Fall colors in the area are breathtaking!brbrGuests are able to walk down to the private beach on Lake Michigan via the neighbor's steps (which are shared with guests) and enjoy sunbathing, frolicking in Lake Michigan, walking along the beach, and having beach bonfires. For outdoor fun, a charcoal grill, beach chairs, and bicycles are available in the garage for guests to use.brbrInside, there are also great lake views from the living room, dining room, and one of the bedrooms. The home has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. There are 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom on each floor, with the second floor bedrooms and bathroom being basically mirror images of the first floor bedrooms and bathroom. The cottage also features a full kitchen with a dishwasher, a wood fireplace in the living room (firewood not provided), high-speed Wi-Fi, satellite and streaming television, board games, puzzles, a front load washer and dryer, and air conditioning. brbrIMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE AND HOUSE GUIDELINES:brbr1) PETS: We allow up to 2 dogs. More than 2 dogs or any other kind of pet is strictly prohibited. If bringing one or two dogs, please make certain that you specify that you are bringing pets so that the pet fee is properly applied. No dogs on dune (restoration from erosion in process). Keep dogs on leash unless on beach. Wash sand off dogs with outdoor hose prior to reentry after beach. Pick up dog poop put in plastic bag then inside yellow trash bag. Crate available for use when leave dog(s) at cottage while gone. Please keep dogs off beds/bedding.brbr2) PARKING / ENTRY: Please back up driveway if possible. Turning around at the top causes damage to road & parking pad. Park in space with Brunner sign on parking pad overnight and at top of driveway to unload/load. Do not go past barrier or steps with car. If you park more than 2 cars, you may be asked to move yours if a neighbor needs to get out. Any other cars may park further back on driveway or down Maple Arch, either on a dirt access road or at the bottom of the hill, after unloading at cottage. Thank you for your cooperation due to limited parking spaces, especially during peak season.brbr3) SHOES: Please take off shoes upon entry to limit sand in home.brbr4) CLEANING: Multiple vacuums are available for vacuuming floor, carpet & couches. For the stove, before & after use make sure no dried food spots on it by cleaning with the white Magic Erase sponge & if needed, Cerama Bryte under sink.brbr5) WASHING CLOTHES: The house has well water that has a high iron content in it. Guests are advised not to wash personal white items in hot water in the washing machine as they may become discolored.brbr6) WATER & ICE: Water is ok to drink & cook with, except please use Brita or bottled water for Keurig coffee. Water & ice in fridge/freezer is turned off; so drink water from Brita & make own ice cubes with plastic trays.brbr7) TRASH: Close garage door at night so raccoons don’t get in trash. Keep bags of trash in closed lid containers in garage. Put trash out at M-22 & Marquette early in the morning on Tuesdays & Fridays, never overnight! Trash must be in yellow bags when put out, they are in basement, if need more, can buy at grocery in Frankfortbrbr8) BLUFF: The home is on top of a very fragile sand bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. There are huge bags of sand at the base of the bluff to prevent future erosion. Guests are not permitted to climb the sand dune for both their safety and the safety of the bluff. (The private beach can be accessed via the nextdoor neighbor's stairs, which are shared with guests.) Similarly, the driveway portion that is directly between the house and the bluff is blocked off and cars are not permitted on this part of the driveway. This is again for both the safety of guests as well as the safety of the bluff since the top of the driveway is fragile and may give way.brbr9) ACCESSIBILITY: The home requires parking approximately 100 feet away from the house. There are two ways to access the property: one is up 35 steps and the other involves walking around the house to the other side and going up 12 steps. The latter is easier for someone with a walker or for someone with rolling luggage. If there are accessibility concerns, please contact us before making a reservation.brbr10) HOUSE LIGHTS: Upon arrival can turn lights on via switch near base of stairs. Can also turn stair lights on/off inside house by north sliding door. There are miscellaneous porch & driveway outdoor lights along south cottage wall inside. brbr11) CELL PHONE SERVICE: Cell phone service generally works at the property, but there is a land line that is available for guests to use if they have issues with cell phone service.brbr12) FIRE SAFETY: Bonfires and fireworks are not permitted near the house or at the top of the bluff due to the large number of trees in the area and for preservation of the sand dune.brbr13) AIR CONDITIONING: The house does NOT have central air conditioning, but there are room air conditioners in the upstairs bedrooms as well as a mini-split air conditioning until in the living room.brbr14) NUMBER OF GUESTS: Please note that our pricing is based upon the number of guests, with pricing being higher with each additional guest that is included on the reservation. The neighborhood is primarily made up of vacation homes of professional families.brbrOutside of the immediate neighborhood, the home is just a few miles from downtown Frankfort, which has a charming collection of shops, restaurants, cafes, and a microbrewery (Stormcloud). Frankfort also has a fantastic public beach on Lake Michigan and a popular historic lighthouse. The Bright and Breezy is also less than a 30-minute drive from both the start of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (to the north) as well as Crystal Mountain Ski Resort (to the southeast).brbrThe house is also only about a 1-hour drive east to Traverse City. Traverse City is the business, arts, recreation, entertainment, dining, and shopping hub of all of Northern Michigan and it provides a vast variety of bigger city things to see and do.brbrbrGUEST ACCESS:brbrGuests have access to the entire house, except for the furnace room which is locked off for storage.brbrbrTHE SPACE:brbrIt is important to understand the layout of the house. The house is a bit of a treehouse in that the main shared living space in terms of the living room, dining room, and the kitchen ARE ALL LOCATED ON THE SECOND FLOOR. Thus, the home may not work well for everybody.brbrAnother important aspect of the layout is that the two downstairs bedrooms and the downstairs bathroom are somewhat separated from the rest of the house. With four bedrooms it can accommodate up to 9 guests. The cottage comes with all appliances, cooking equipment, washer and dryer, three and a half baths, towels, bed linens, and beach towels. Main floor: Master bedroom with its own bathroom, has a queen bed, dresser, and closet. Just off the open concept kitchen, living, and dining room is a screen porch. There is a half bathroom next to the laundry room. Upstairs has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a living room. Two of the bedrooms have a queen bed and the third bedroom has a twin and a queen bed. A dresser is in each bedroom for your use. The upstairs living room has a TV in the sitting area and a game table to do puzzles or play a game. The cottage has central air conditioning, gas cooktop, washer & dryer, TV, internet, fireplace, gas BBQ Grill, and parking for up to 4 cars. It is only three miles south on M22 to the City of Frankfort for restaurants, shopping, or a beach day at the Frankfort beach on Lake Michigan. brbrThere are at least two public beaches on Crystal Lake:brThe Village of Beulah on the east end of the lake has a nice large public beach area and you are very near restaurants and stores. brbrOn the south shore there is another public beach, however much smaller but it does have a boat ramp for smaller boats. There's a small playground on the beach as well. Across South Shore Road from the beach is a park-like area. There is a map in the Welcome Book that will show you how to get to the Bellows Park Public Beach. It is about a mile from the cottage on South Shore Road.brbr

Original 1892 Watervale School/Blaine #7 one-room schoolhouse, carefully converted into a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom Up North retreat. On a private one acre lot on scenic M-22 in Benzie County, Michigan. Borders Upper Herring Lake Nature Preserve. Less than a mile from public access to Upper and Lower Herring Lakes. Less than 5 minutes to downtown Frankfort, 10 minutes to Beulah and Arcadia, 15 min to Crystal Mountain, under an hour to a wide assortment of beaches, shops, and attractions from Manistee to Traverse City.brbrThe schoolhouse was one of the original buildings in the lumber town of Watervale, which was established in 1892 and which sits about a mile south of the school's current location. The lumber town went bankrupt in 1893 after the Great Recession of 1892-93, but the school remained in Watervale until 1906, when it was dragged across the fields and up what is now M-22 and placed in its current position, on land donated by the Frederickson family. Blaine #7 replaced a smaller schoolhouse that was moved to another spot on Upper Herring Lake and became the Frederickson School/Blaine #4. brbrBlaine #4 remained in operation until 1964, at which point the Frederickson family took ownership of it and used it as their Up North camp for over a half-century. In October 2021, the schoolhouse was purchased by family members of the current owners of Watervale (now a seasonal resort), and the process of returning the building to its schoolhouse roots began. brbrThanks in large part to consultation with the Benzie Area Historical Society, interviews with former students at the school, and an unwavering focus on preservation and details, the schoolhouse allows guests to feel that they're staying in a part of Benzie County history while also affording them the creature comforts of modern living. A 4K TV alongside framed artwork made by students in the 1920s and 1930s that were found behind the chalkboards during construction.
