Cabin

Modern-Rustic Cabin: 5 mins to Downtown Nevada City & 15 mins to Yuba River

Nevada City, California, United States

Cabin at Lost Sierra Gateway | Log Cabin on 1.25 Acres Near the Yuba RiverbrbrTucked among towering pines at the base of Banner Mountain, the Cabin at Lost Sierra Gateway is a tastefully modernized log cabin on 1.25 private acres in Nevada City, California — the heart of Gold Country. This is the kind of place where you pour your morning coffee on the deck amongst the cedars, walk out the back door onto a forested trail, and spend the afternoon floating in emerald swimming holes on the South Yuba River. Then you come home, fire up the grill, and watch the stars come out through the treetops.brbrWe renovated this cabin with one idea in mind: keep everything that makes a log cabin special — the hand-hewn railings, the exposed beam ceilings, the warmth of real wood everywhere you look — and update the rest so it actually feels like home. The kitchen has a gas range with a stainless steel hood, sage green Heath Ceramics tile backsplash, quartz countertops, and knotty wood cabinetry that ties the whole room together. The living room has a deep, sink-into-it sofa, a wood stove for chilly evenings, and a corrugated metal accent wall that gives the space a hint of mountain-industrial character. There is a record player with a small vinyl collection if you want to set the mood. We even have a ChargePoint EV charger for topping off your battery overnight.brbrUpstairs you will find two bedrooms with sloped pine ceilings and dormer windows that let in soft morning light. The primary bedroom has a king bed with a handmade geometric quilt and views into the canopy. The second bedroom has two twin beds and a small futon suitable for kids, colorful hand-painted bunting, a reading nook, and an eclectic, collected feel — art on the walls, a kilim rug underfoot, shelves with books, a a futon for that extra kid guest. Both bathrooms have been updated with modern fixtures, marble countertops, and live-edge wood details. Downstairs there is also a comfortable sectional sofa for more adventurous additional guests.brbrThe cabin sits on 1.25 acres of wooded property with plenty of parking, a gated entrance, and just mintues from historic Downtown Nevada City. The wrap-around deck is the real gathering place — string lights glow at night and the fire pit is steps away. There is a BBQ grill, outdoor seating, and the kind of quiet that reminds you why you came to the mountains in the first place. Birdhouses dot the tall pines and you may spot woodpeckers, jays, and the occasional deer.brbrONE OF THE BEST PARTS: THE DITCH TRAILbrbrThe historic Banner Ditch Trail runs directly behind the property, an irrigation canal dating back to the Gold Rush era, and still in use today. Step out the back gate and you are on a flat, scenic path that follows an old mining canal through the forest. It is perfect for morning walks, afternoon bike rides, or letting the kids explore — and it connects to a wider network of trails around Nevada City. You do not need to drive anywhere to feel like you are in the middle of nature. You already are.brbrSWIMMING HOLES AND THE SOUTH YUBA RIVERbrbrThe South Yuba River is 15 minutes away and it is spectacular. The easiest access point is at the Highway 49 crossing at the old bridge, where you will find turquoise pools carved into smooth granite boulders — the kind of swimming holes that look like they belong in a travel magazine. You can swim right below the bridge or cross it and take a short 1.25-mile hike up to Hoyt's Crossing for more secluded spots and dramatic rock formations. Arrive before 11 AM in summer for the best parking. Bring water, sunscreen, and a towel — we have beach towels at the cabin if you forget.brbrFIVE MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN NEVADA CITYbrbrNevada City is one of California's most charming small towns and it is right around the corner. The historic downtown is packed with independent restaurants, breweries, galleries, and shops in beautifully preserved Gold Rush-era buildings. Grab craft beer and German-inspired bites at BrewBilt BrewHaus, sip wine and enjoy the vibe and authenitc Italian-style pizzas at The Bicycle Thief, or have a fancy night out at Dakan. For a classic Gold Country evening, get drinks on the veranda at the National Hotel — California's oldest continuously operating hotel — or pull up a stool at the Mine Shaft Saloon with the locals. The Saturday farmers market runs through the summer and fall, and the annual Victorian Christmas celebration in December transforms the entire downtown into a gaslit wonderland.brbrFor outdoor adventures beyond the Yuba, you are close to Empire Mine State Historic Park (hiking through old Gold Rush ruins), Deer Creek Tribute Trail and its beautiful suspension bridge, Hirschman Trail and pond (great for families), Sugarloaf Mountain for panoramic views, and Scotts Flat Lake for boating and fishing. Grass Valley is 10 minutes away with additional dining, shopping, and the historic downtown district.brbrWorld class Tahoe skiing at Sugarbowl is less than a 1-hour drive (weather-permitting) up Highway 20 and a short hop on I-80.brbrWHAT MAKES THIS CABIN DIFFERENTbrbrThis is not a cookie-cutter vacation rental. We have owned this property for years and every choice — from the quilts on the beds to the subway tile in the kitchen — was made because we love this place and want you to love it too. The cabin has real character. It has books on the shelves that we have actually read, art on the walls that we picked out, and a record player because sometimes you just want to listen to an album all the way through.brbrAt the same time, we have not skimped on the practical stuff. The Wi-Fi is fast and reliable if you need to work remotely. The Smart TV has streaming apps ready to go. The 3-zone HVAC system keeps every room comfortable year-round, and the wood stove is there for when you want that crackle and glow on a cold night. The washer and dryer are in the cabin so you can pack light. And your dog is welcome — we are dog people and the property has plenty of room to roam within the fully-fenced property.brbrGETTING HEREbrbrThe cabin is 150 miles from San Francisco — about 2 hours and 15 minutes on a straightforward drive up I-80 and Highway 49. Once you exit in Nevada City, you are just a mile from the highway and the transition from freeway to forest happens fast. Self check-in is via lockbox so you can arrive on your own schedule.brbrTHE SPACEbrbr- 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6br- King bed (primary), Queen bed (second bedroom), Sofa bed (living room)br- 1.25 acres, gated property, private parkingbr- Wrap-around deck with string lights and outdoor seatingbr- Fire pit and BBQ grillbr-EV Chargerbr- Updated kitchen: gas range, quartz counters, subway tile, dishwasherbr- Wood stove and 3-zone HVAC (heating and AC)br- Fast Wi-Fi Gigabit and Smart TV with streamingbr- Record player with vinyl collectionbr- Washer and dryer in unitbr- Bosch Dishwasherbr- Detached garagebr- The Ditch Trail accessible from the backyardbr- Dog-friendly (fee applies)brbrNEARBYbrbr- Downtown Nevada City: 5 minutesbr- South Yuba River swimming holes: 15 minutesbr- Grass Valley: 10 minutesbr- Empire Mine State Historic Park: 10 minutesbr- Scotts Flat Lake: 15 minutesbr- Sacramento: 1 hourbr- San Francisco: 2.25 hoursbr- Lake Tahoe / Truckee: 1 hourbrbrWhether you are here for a long weekend, a week-long retreat, or just need a place to slow down and breathe, the Cabin at Lost Sierra Gateway is waiting for you at the bottom of Banner Mountain.

Three bedrooms, plus media room with a full-size pull out couch; three and a half bathrooms, with updated, modern decor and amenities.brbrFeatures include: High-speed Wifi, two large flat-screen smart TVs for access to your own Netflix/Amazon/Hulu, etc. accounts (there is no cable television access at the cabin), Sonos wireless speaker, central heat and air conditioning, dishwasher, washer and dryer, Tuft & Needle mattresses and white linens, private attached two car garage for easy, interior access to the home. Hardwood floors throughout. brbrThe updated, modern, high-end kitchen includes all stainless steel appliances, and is fully stocked for meal preparation and dining. Dining table with extension leaf comfortably seats up to 12.brbrThe house is located directly on the Cascade Canal trail, offering 4.5 miles (one way) of virtually flat hiking through the peaceful forest along a beautiful gold rush-era waterway. Direct access to the canal and trail is literally 15 feet outside the back door. There is a large lawn in front of the house with a separate deck for outdoor dining. The house is up a private driveway on 1.5 acres with only one other house viewable from the property for privacy and seclusion.brbrBedrooms include:br- Primary with a king size bed and private shower and toilet room. Double sinks are located in the master bedroom itself (see photos).br- Queen bedroom with built in desk. Shares full hall bathroom (with shower/tub combo) with:br- Cozy bedroom with two twin beds.br- Basement media room with a full-sized pull out couch (with memory foam topper) and its own private, attached half bath.brbrAn additional full bathroom (with shower) is located on the main floor, off the kitchen.brbrThere is a wood burning stove in the living room for both warmth and winter woods ambience. Plenty of board games, puzzles and toys for kids young and old. The bookshelves are full of books to read while there, or take with if you become engrossed in one.brbrPets are welcome with an additional cleaning fee. Children welcome and will love it here, but know that there is no fence leading to the canal waterway and should be watched closely. Comfortably sleeps 8 adults, additional children welcome in pack'n'plays/floor mats.brbrWe've put a lot of time, energy and thought into making this a special mountain getaway retreat in a very special little town and know that you'll have a wonderful time in our home!brbrGuests have access to the entire house, including the garage. The home is three stories, including the lower garage/media room level, so it is a requirement to be able to go up and down stairs. Additionally, the house is located on a slight slope with gravel paths and stairs for access to the front door. Being able to navigate slightly loose, uneven terrain is also a necessity.brbrA local property manager is available for any onsite needs or questions.brbrOther things to note:brPG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff Potential - Much of Northern California, Nevada City included, is subject to power shut offs from the local utility, PG&E, when it is determined that weather conditions are creating a high fire danger (typically, high winds, low humidity and warm). The cabin is equipped with a Tesla PowerWall battery back-up, so power should not be interrupted at the house, HOWEVER, when running on back-up battery, the air conditioning will not work and major appliances (washer/dryer & dishwasher) should not be used to conserve battery energy. By booking the cabin you acknowledge that there is the potential for loss of power in the area and at the house during your stay. Refunds will not be given if a power shutoff in the area is predicted or occurs.brbrWinter Conditions - While rare, it can snow in Nevada City in the winter and our Cabin is at a slightly higher elevation than town, meaning more snow. The gravel driveway is on a slope leading up to the house and is not easily plowed. If there is snow forecast, it's highly recommended to have a 4WD car with chains and/or have enough food and wood provisions for a cozy weekend snowed in. If enough snow falls and your car cannot make it up, you may be required to park at the bottom of the driveway and walk the short distance up to the house. Snow shovels and sleds provided.brbrEarly Check-In/Late Check-Out: If it can be accommodated (no one else is checking in or out on your arrival or departure day), we can sometimes offer either early or late check out, outside of the typical hours of 4 p.m. check-in/11 a.m. check out, at a rate of $10 per hour. However, we typically will not know if the request will be possible more than 1-2 days prior to check-in. If you know that you'll need an early check-in/late check-out, consider booking another night!brbrPotential for noise - The house is a log cabin and the floors upstairs are the ceilings for downstairs without any insulation. Noise travels easily between the two floors.brbrNo Smoking - This is a no smoking house and property. If it is found that any substance has been smoked anywhere on the property (particularly inside the house anywhere - including basement/garage), you will be charged $250 for smoke remediation.br

Magical Yurt in the woods - 2 miles from town

Nevada City, California, United States

Experience the Beauty of the Sierra foothills and the Yuba River in our Yurt tucked into the forest just 2 miles from downtown Nevada City. Country Living magazine listed Nevada City as one of the top 10 small cities. Grass Valley is 10 minutes away as well and has more food, shopping, and entertainment for you. Access to the Yuba River is as close as 20 minutes to Edwards Crossing and 20 mins to Hoyts Crossing on Highway 49.brbrCome and relax! This unique and beautiful 18' yurt is tucked into a lush watershed area. Surrounded by Ferns, Madrones, Incense Cedars, and Doug Firs, you will never know you are only two miles from town. Country Living magazine listed Nevada City as one of the top 10 small cities. Our property connects to the Woodpecker Preserve and the Gracie Trail if you hike up the mountain. With a natural creek right outside your door and hiking trails right off the deck, this serene and beautiful yurt retreat awaits you.brbrWe absolutely recommend trying to stay for two or more nights so that you can get accustomed to the space, learn the property, settle in, and relax.brbrThings you might like to bring: headlamps, robe, flip flops, slippers, hiking shoes. brbrThere is a wood-fired stove inside with plenty of wood stacked to keep you warm and there is a wood-fired hot tub that is dedicated to this yurt only. Both require a fire to be lit and maintained to keep it hot.brbrThe kitchen is fully equipped with a hot plate, toaster oven, microwave, refrigerator, cutlery, pots and pans, grill, etc. There should be charcoal available, but if not, please plan to bring your own or go to the store.brbrWater: we are on a well and provide fresh drinking water in a container for you. It’s fine to drink, cook, and bathe with the water from the tap but it can have a minerally quality to it. We test the well annually. We provide filtered water but if it runs out, the water out of the tap is safe and delicious. brbrFireplace: We will leave you a bundle of wood that comes with the rental. If you need more wood you can purchase it from us or from the grocery store. We have lots of wood at the yurt and we ask you to pay $10 per bundle if you use more then we leave you inside. This is on the honor system. If you don’t know how to start a fire you may want to bring an instant log. brbrThe hot tub: it’s wood-fired. This means you have to heat it with a fire to get it hot. This can take many hours to get to the right temperature. It’s a good idea to start a fire right when you get there!brbrSleep: we have a heating blanket for cold nights. It’s about 10 degrees cooler on our land than in town. There will be a fan for you as well during the warm season.brbrIt’s a beautiful time of year on the property. If you walk the trails around the property and keep going up, you will hit the irrigation streams, so beautiful right now! You can also walk up the street to access the same waterways. Please stay on the paths and do not allow dogs, kids, etc. to put unnecessary wear and tear on the environment.brbrWe have 19 chickens and two baby goats (born 3/14/25). You're welcome to take fresh eggs out of the indoor coop. Feel free to go into the pen and interact with the goats; they love fresh branches, fresh leaves, chips, and crackers. They are currently bottle-fed fed so they like to suck on fingers as well. They love attention! The spotted one is Rocket, and the yellow one is Willow.brbrCheckout: Checkout time is 11 am. Here’s how to check out -Please do the dishes. Pile your used towels together so I don’t wash things that haven’t been used. Leave the door unlocked and leave the trash where it is, and we will take care of it. Just send me a text to 510-541-9416 that you’ve left if possible, so we can come and get it ready for the next person.br brLand acknowledgment: We acknowledge that our property is located on unceded land. It is the traditional homeland of the Nisenan tribe. The Nisenan tribe is alive and active and continues to fight for federal recognition and compensation for land loss. We donate 10% of proceeds to CHIRP, which promotes the history and culture of the Nisenan tribe.https://chirpca.orgbrAnd the Bear Yuba Land Trust, which helps protect the fragile Yuba watershed. https://www.bylt.orgbrbrbrThank you,brEnjoy your stay and be well!brMegan and Nathan
