Bryson City is also the host for the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad (GSMR) train that offers scenic rides to the Nantahala Gorge, Dillsboro and also Whittier during the Christmas holiday season as the 'Polar Express' (heads up: may catch a glimpse from Tucked Away as it makes its way to the North Pole). The GSMR operates using a historic Steam Locomotive to add the nostalgia, romance and character of a train ride (especially the 'Polar Express').brbrAlso, within a 20-minute radius of Tucked Away is access the to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, which offers endless hiking, and scenic drives with endless views in every direction. In this order they visited: Tallulah Gorge State Park - deepest gorge this side of the Mississippi with a suspension bridge over the gorge/river for those brave enough to make the trip down the steps (more accessible view points throughout Tallulah Gorge State Park), then over to Isaqueena Falls- if you're brave you can also venture into Stumphouse Tunnel in the same area. By 1859, the State of South Carolina had spent over a million dollars on the tunnel and refused to spend any more on the project, therefore the tunnel work was abandoned. The tunnel had been excavated to a length of 1,617 feet of the planned 5,863 total feet. From there they turned back toward home and stopped at Dry Falls, a roaring waterfall which has a path you can walk behind the falls. Some pictures from these locations included to give an idea of local attractions to visit. brbrGuests have also recommended spending a day traveling through the Great Smokey Mountain and exit directly into Gatlinburg, Tennessee which they described as one of the most fun tourists towns they've visited with many attractions for all interests (they particularly enjoyed Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies) and fun specialty shops and restaurants on their main street.
