Waterfall Cottage within sight & sound of Cane Creek Falls, 2BR 2BA

Dahlonega, Georgia, United States

Our Waterfall Cottage is a 2BR/2BA vacation home within sight and sound of the iconic 50 ft tall Cane Creek Falls. Large screened porch, wood-burning fireplace, WiFi and more on Cane Creek. It is located in the very unique and special location inside the security gated several hundred acre Glisson Camp and Retreat Center. There is a small enclave of privately owned cottages, which are accessible at all times. Ours is the second one downstream at the base of the falls. A large screened porch with dining table and comfortable seating area and other viewing areas will give you the sense of really being with nature as the cottage is about fifty feet from Cane Creek. Lots on either side are vacant and Falls Mountain is behind the cottage. It has two bedrooms, one with a king bed and one with a queen bed and two full baths, fireplace (operational October through March) & we supply Duraflame 3 hour logs (1 per night), free WiFi, Smart TV via Amazon Fire TV stick with YouTube TV, Netflix & Prime Video, land-line phone with unlimited USA long distance (cell service is spotty), lower covered deck with porch swing. Breakfast is not provided, but we do provide coffee and all the basic needs for cooking. There are no dishwasher or laundry facilities. We provide camp chairs for you to take to sit by the falls. We have a BBQ and provide charcoal. Cane Creek is a designated trout stream and is now open year-round, but you must have a valid Georgia license to fish. We use the Waterfall Cottage as our own get-away when not rented and thoroughly enjoy spending time there. There are hiking trails all around the camp and maps are located on signs at the welcome center and downstream of the cottage. The falls area is rich in history as a Native American gathering place with netting holes and petroglyphs etched in the rocks by the falls. It was also the site of a very early large water wheel electric generating plant. Much of the time you will find the cottage to be a very quiet and peaceful get-away. The camp does have retreats many weekends, but the main buildings and their cabins are not located near our cottage with the exception of the Program Center, which was designed after the gold mining structures of Dahlonega’s history.brbrIt is about 5 minutes from the Dahlonega Square.brbrSome things for you to consider before renting this very special cottage: 1. Strictly limited to four people maximum including children, 2. absolutely no pets, 3. absolutely no smoking anywhere either inside the cottage or outside as the camp is tobacco free, 4. the parking area is about 90 yards from the cottage – you park and then walk toward the falls and then across the foot bridge in front of the falls and then up a path 5. two night minimum with some holidays requiring 3 niights. 6. The second bedroom has private access to the second bathroom and screened porch and there is a door between that area and the master bedroom, but access from the second bedroom to the kitchen/living room is through the master bedroom, unless you go through the screened porch, to the lower deck and up the outside steps. 7. There are about 10 private cottages along the creek inside the 400 acre Methodist owned Camp Glisson Retreat Center. In 2026 from May 24th to July 24th there are youth summer camp sessions from Sunday afternoon until Friday noon. The camp owns the falls, creek and hiking trails. We ask that guests give young campers their space while they are enjoying the outdoors during organized activities Sunday afternoon through Friday morning during summer camp. During summer camp guests can use the immediate waterfall area anytime the young campers are not there, which happens several times a day and during meal times.Guests can see the falls from the cottage and especially from the Adirondack chair area. Camp trails are closed during summer camp, but there are many hiking trails nearby and many lead to other waterfalls. Friday afternoon through Sunday morning during summer camp there are no children in camp, only the camp counselors. So, guests are welcome to use the immediate falls area. 8. We have 2 exterior security cameras aimed at the cottage door and the lower deck. There are no interior cameras. We turn the cameras on when the cottage is vacant. We sometimes turn on the cottage door camera until guests check in so we know they have arrived safely. We then turn them off.

Cabin

Rustic Historical Cabin near Wineries & Gold Mines

Dahlonega, Georgia, United States

Step into the past with the comforts of the present in this newly restored cabin. The nature of this cabin will take you back to a time when horse & carriage was the means of travel & sleeping porches were a thing.brbrFeatures:br4 Comfy Queen Size BedsbrLarge Screened Porch with SwingbrFirepitbrModern KitchenbrLarge Family TablebrAntique FurniturebrWiFibrSecludedbrbrThe House brThe earliest construction of the Porter Springs Farmhouse pre-dates the Civil War & has been continuously owned by the same family. It was part of the Queen of the Mountains hotel & resort, situated just a short distance from the Farmhouse & was located in what was known as the community of Porter Springs. Queen of the Mountains, referred to by family as “The Old Hotel,” was a summer get-away for many people in Atlanta because of the cooler weather & the legendary benefits of the springs on the property. Dinner was enjoyed with orchestral music & there was a bowling alley & other entertainments. Cold outdoor showers were the norm because running water was not available. Travel from Atlanta was usually a two-day journey by coach, with a stop in Gainesville. brbrIt’s believed that Porter Springs Farmhouse began as a caretaker’s or hunter’s cabin. The house was given to my great uncle by my great-great grandfather, Colonel Henry Patillo Farrow, the owner of the Old Hotel. The original house constitutes the oldest part of the Farmhouse & includes the living room & two bedrooms, all having painted surfaces. The “newer” part of the house is the log portion. Construction began in 1909 when my great-uncle learned that his future bride’s dream was to live in a log house. The wood used to build the Farmhouse consists of some American Chestnut, which grew prolifically around the house until the blight in the early 1940’s. The house was added onto over the years with whatever wood was available on the surrounding land. brbrThroughout the generations, the Farmhouse has been a gathering place for young & old alike. Games were a beloved past time, family gatherings were common & practical jokes abounded. Frog gigging at night, making corncob pipes for rabbit tobacco, visiting Trahlyta’s grave (Stonepile Gap) in the dark to see if she’d speak to visitors, hiking Blood Mountain & telling ghost stories were some of the favorite memories of the older generation. brbrBecause the house is so old, we have unwelcome visitors from time to time & you might see a mouse. However, we have made them feel so unwelcome in recent years that it’s a rare occurrence. There is also the dust factor. Try as we might to clean the house, it just sheds dirt & dust. Therefore, a visit to Porter Springs Farmhouse isn’t for everyone but the person who appreciates history & can imagine camping indoors with the comforts of heat, air conditioning, internet, dishwasher, big-screen tv, home office & oven/stove.brbrExplorationsbrAround the house, you’ll see some evidence of the Old Hotel. Some fun explorations include spending some time with the green benches on the front porch where late 1800’s visitors to the Old Hotel carved their names into the benches. Try googling them & see what you can learn! Also on the porch are lights on both sides of the front door that are taken from old stagecoaches. Try writing a story about what it would be like to ride in a stagecoach! Inside the house, the dining room furniture is original to the house & the dining room table is from the Old Hotel. brbrBecause rodents were always a problem in the past (sometimes in the present!), the kitchen cabinets are protected by hooks on the interior & wooden locks on the exterior. Similar locks were employed on bathroom, bedroom & exterior doors. The windows are “locked” with wooden locks & a nail. Feel free to explore the house & all of the interesting ways in which every day life was lived. brbrSites &SoundsbrMany different animals have been raised over the years at the Farmhouse including chickens, goats & most recently, Angus cattle. Today, neighbors raise Angus cattle & they surround the Farmhouse. Grazing on private property, they come close enough to the house to hear them chewing the grass, snorting & calling out to their young. Because bulls are also present, wandering the pasture or going down to the creeks is absolutely forbidden. Dogs must be leashed when they go outside so they don’t risk running into the pasture & getting injured or spooking the cattle. brbrThere are many other animals around the house. We have seen bears, deer, turkeys & hear the calls of many birds, including owls. Our favorite place to sit & enjoy the wildlife is the front porch where there is a frequent breeze - even on the hottest days.brbrPlease note: This is an old cabin that has been updated. It still has a lot of old cabin quirks & features. The fireplaces are not functional! They were kept for their historical value.brbr~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~brBEFORE YOU BOOK:br-Area wide power outages are common in the mountains & no refunds will be given if an area wide power outage happens during your stay. The driveway is actually a road. It cannot be blocked. During your stay some vehicles may drive through as well as minimal pedestrian traffic. You will continue straight until you see our sign and a concrete driveway on the right. Gps sometimes tries to have you turn on Lunceford Circle before our driveway, this is incorrect and will send you to other side of our property. brbrLumpkin County allows shooting of firearms during daytime and night time hours. From time to time shooting can be heard from our property. Shooting firearms for any use other than self defense is prohibited at our property.brbrLewis Grindle is the road that leads to our property. It is a private road and usually in disrepair. We try our hardest to keep it smooth, but it is a rough ride. 3 other vacation rentals, delivery trucks, mail service and residents use the road daily without any issues.
