This is a second home for us and, along with our four married children and a bunch of grandchildren, we enjoy this wonderful retreat as often as we can. brbrThe home was designed and built with simplicity of style to maximize the lake front lot, is decorated throughout with both new and old pieces which we have gathered over the years and includes features which make such a place comfortable and practical. The combination Great Room, Dining and Kitchen are fully equipped, bed linens are furnished along with towels/cloths for bath and lake. Most bedrooms are on the second floor (1 on the main floor), some with direct lake views. A large open sun deck plus a screened porch with hot tub provide views of the lake and mountains.brbrBedroom configuration includes: 4 BR each with 1 King; 1 BR with 1 Queen and 1 BR with 6 Bunk beds. WiFi and internet access, TV (3), games, LP record player with old-time records, CDs and table top ping pong. Dine in or outside on the deck or in screened porch.brbrWalk a few steps down to the dock where you can enjoy swimming, sun bathing, kayaking (2), fishing (with proper license) and if you like, a private boat can be rented from the marina and kept at the dock during your stay. The lake is all fresh water, fed by numerous mountain streams, and is always refreshing! brbr brThe Neighborhood brLake Toxaway is located in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and as a private resort, has been a vacation and summer playground for the rich and famous such as Edison, Ford, DuPont, et al in the early 1900s; and in 1916 heavy rains caused the lake dam to fail. Reopened for new development beginning in the 1950s, families have built their private residences and second homes here, and enjoy an impressive array of amenities; many year 'round. Several thousand acres comprise the Lake Toxaway Estates, and only property owners (and their guests) are permitted access to the lake and environs.brbrWhen you want to shop, buy groceries, dine out or just browse, the town of Brevard is just 17 miles away; and the town of Cashiers (emphasis on first syllable)is just 13 miles. The town of Highlands, about 40 minutes away, attracts people from all walks during the high summer season. The house is located in the community of Lake Toxaway N.C. Blue Ridge Lake is a private spring fed, four and a half acre lake with only 7 homes. Blue Ridge Lake is about a mile north and a few 100 feet above Lake Toxaway. Almost every room in the house has views of Blue Ridge Lake. The master bedroom has a king size bed a lake view and private bathroom. A second bedroom has a lake view and a private bath. The third bedroom has a picture window facing the garden. The fully equipped kitchen has dishwasher, microwave and gas stove and oven. The second bathroom is next to the great room. New central Airconditioning and heating system .Free wifi/ internet throughout the house. The wrap around deck has covered and uncovered areas and is a great place to eat, sleep, watch wildlife on the Lake and to read and relax.You can fish from our private dock or our fishing boat and our 2 kayaks.brbrThe Gardens Around the House include native plants and wild flowers designed to attract birds. The gardens include a large collection of Hostas and seasonal planting of our large collection of Begonias and Fuchsias. We are members of the American Begonia Society and the American Hostas Society. The couple we purchased the home from had been living and gardening on the Lake for over 30 years. Gardening is a work in progress and we spend a great deal of our time in Lake Toxaway gardening. It is wonderful to be able to garden in the middle of the summer and rarely work up a sweat! The environment that makes the area great for gardening is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the country.br Spring is our favorite time in the gardens and in the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.The wild flowers are best from May into June. Mountain laurel and the native rhododendrons usually bloom in June in our gardens . Summer is a great time for the annuals and many of the perennials we have planted in the garden.If you can beat the birds to them we have many blue berry plants spread around the gardens and the berries are great summer treats. In August the temperatures where we live often reach 100 degrees and we are thinking about our mountain retreat where the high temperatures rarely exceed 83 degrees. Fall is the time many of our guest come for the turning of the leaves. Peak color at our elevation is usually around 2nd week in October. The mountains in our area provide a long season for leaf chasers.The higher elevations on the near by Blue Ridge Parkway often start showing color in early September. Color at elevations below our house in the Brevard area will often last into November. brWe chose our vacation home on Blue Ridge Lake because of the views, the climate and the proximity to Brevard, Cashiers, Highlands, Asheville, hiking trails and waterfalls.
