Private Vacation Home

Spectacular view over San Diego County to Mt. Laguna, downtown, Catalina Island.

Palomar Mountain, California, United States

Please note, 3 night minimums for Tgiving, Xmas, New Year's. brbrPrivate cabin in the trees built in the early 1900s has been upgraded but retains all its rustic original charm. Watch eagles fly at eye level, clouds roll in, sunsets and moonsets in the ocean. Bobcats, wild turkeys, and deer regularly walk through the property. Decorated by owner with antiques and comfortable furniture (not all in pristine, new condition!) , large view deck for grilling and sitting in the sun, sauna. Dramatic infinity deck on mountain edge for sunset cocktails, morning yoga. Fully equipped kitchen, propane grill, tv, dvd player. Three bedrooms each with a queen or full bed, two couches could accommodate kids. Short drive from hiking, the Palomar Observatory, fishing at Lake Henshaw, entertainment at Harrah's Rincon Casino. Wonderful place to spend a snowy weekend, but 4 wheel drive and chains are needed on the few occasions when snow is deep. Some guest complaints: cluttered [cluttered with board games, coloring materials, telescopes, astronomy, bird, Palomar history books, maybe cluttered just a little]; cobwebs [if you search, you can probably find one or two, cleaned thoroughly after every guest]; feels like we're housesitting [hmmmm- this is a complaint ]. Best guest comment ever: 'It's clearly a well-loved and special place.' BINGO. Thanks, Emily. No dishwasher, I'm afraid.brbrNote: 3 night minimum for Xmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day weekends.brbrCONTACT OWNER FOR EXTENDED STAY (more than 3 nights) RATES.brbrWINTER BOOKING ADVISORY!!!brbrWinter is snow time, which is good and bad. Caltrans has a station up on the mountain and they start plowing the paved roads very quickly when snow starts. Unfortunately, there is nobody up on the mountain who plows private drives, and my cabin is about 500 feet up a dirt branch road that is not plowed. If you plan to be there at a time when snow is predicted, your options are to park near the paved road (but be sure not to park right on side of the road where your car will interfere with plowing or be covered by snow pushed aside by the plow), or plan a long day of shoveling yourself out by hand. I’ve done this shoveling myself before, and it takes a good while. One guest last winter took 8 hours to do this, and they were not happy campers by the end of the day. If you have long time existing reservations and there is a massive storm predicted to hit just before or during your stay, I will of course promise a no penalty cancellation if you chose not to go. Being up there with snow is a wonderful experience, as long as you have supplies and can relax and enjoy. brbrHouse rules: treat this old place with courtesy and common sense: recycle, clean up reasonably after yourself, turn off lights and cooling/heating when not needed and on departure, close and lock doors and windows when leaving- sometimes I don't get up to clean for several days.

Peaceful 1920s Cozy Cabin snuggled in 100 ft Pines -Palomar Mt, Bailey Meadows

Palomar Mountain, California, United States

If you want PEACE AND QUIET, you have found a unique & enchanting retreat.brFor faster service TEXT me 619-871-9354.brbrThe Lilacs was the FIRST VRBO listing on Palomar Mountain in historic Bailey Meadows (near but not part of Bailey Meadow Resort, which is currently closed). We've been on VRBO since 2005 and still open for a romantic getaway, serene encounter with a nature or a quiet, comfy family retreat.brWe do have a caretaker living at the back, opposite side of the entry at a lower level, but on the property, so please be respectful and remember the quiet hours 8PM-8AM.br brThe Lilacs is a beautifully restored, cozy 1920's Redwood cabin on Palomar Mountain just 1:25 minutes from San Diego. The cabin has 1) Master bedroom, 2) a small room with desk/dresser & ladder to the LOFT for the adventurous sleepers, plus 3) a futon sofa-bed in main living room, where there is the original rock hearth. ALSO a large, full-glassed in, sun room, a complete kitchen (new stainless steel stove/oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer/drier, cookware and more). brbrGrandma Bailey's cabin turned 100 in 2024!... and is simply FULL of fun, atmosphere, historic knickknacks and special vibes.brbrThe original Redwood walls and timbers were hand-assembled by craftsmen 100 years ago. I restored it all and worked hard to preserve the original character and charm; including the hand-made cabinets, plank walls & doors. Then I totally upgraded the bathrooms and kitchen. brbrThe cabin is located on the ever-peaceful Evergreen Trail in the Bailey Meadows area, by most accounts the most historic and quaint part of Palomar Mountain (a heavy day of traffic on Evergreen Trail is 2-4 cars a day). Sorry, this is not a place for parties, absolutely none.brbrBesides relaxing, there is lots of scenic outing and lots to do on Palomar and the surrounding region. brbrIF YOU ARE FROM SAN DIEGO: Palomar is a piece of High Sierras environment just 1.5 hours from down town. Amazing what SD County has to offer! This Cabin sits on the cozy, shaded side of the mountain. Palomar Mt. State Park is awesome and just 5 minutes away. World-famous Palomar Observatory, Julian (the 1800's quaint Gold mining town) and Anza Borrego State Park, are scenic drives close enough for an outing. We are near to the Bailey's Resort on Palomar, but without the traffic or campers or congestion of Idyllwild, Big Bear, Julian or Lake Arrowhead, and less expensive too.brbrIF YOUR ARE FROM OUT OF San Diego: There are many activities within an hour of Palomar Mt... Beaches about 1.5 hr away, Safari Park (Wild Animal Park), Lego Land: plus and more. Sea World and Disneyland and Tijuana, Mexico are all doable in less than 2 hr drive.brbrKeywords: brUnique authentic experience in Bailey Meadow on Palomar Mt.brGrandma Bailey's Historic Mountain CabinbrFull of atmosphere,brQuaint, charming, rustic cabin comfortsbrFamily retreat, for nature lovers.brMountain get-away & retreatbrFeels like the High Sierras with huge Pines and OaksbrQuiet alternative to Casino hotelsbrCloser than Idyllwild, CA and more privacybrPrivate & un-congested compared to busy Big Bear brAffordable compared to Lake ArrowheadbrSafe, calm and quietbrbr~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ EN ESPANOL ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~brbrSi quieres paz y tranquilidad, has encontrado un lugar muy especial.brPara un servicio más rápido Communicarse por TEXTO 619-871-9354.brbrLa cabina fue restaurado con amor, acogedora cabaña de 1924 en las Montaña de Palomar sólo una hora, 25 minutos de San Diego.
