Pumphouse on Lake Superior I 200’ Lake Superior Frontage I Incredible Views

Duluth, Minnesota, United States

https://www.duluthpumphouse.combrbrWelcome to the historic Pumphouse on Lake Superior with 200' of lakeshore! The Pumphouse is one of Duluth's iconic and historical properties. This home was originally designed by John Wangenstein in 1860 as the water pump house for the City of Duluth but was abandoned when the new pump house was built in 1897. Miss Elisabeth Congdon purchased it and hired renowned architect Harold Starin to convert the pump house into an absolutely stunning French-style home. Enormous 8' windows face the courtyard and London Road, while a terrace along the entire length of the home overhangs Lake Superior. French doors frame the large living room and its commanding view of Lake Superior and the Aerial Lift Bridge. This stunning 3,100 square foot French home sits on 200' of lakefront on London Road. The Pumphouse faces southeast for beautiful sunrises and overhangs Lake Superior. The home features large multi-paned French windows, French doors, 10-foot ceilings, a Pullman-style kitchen, period chandeliers, four gas fireplaces, and other unique elements. You can enjoy a fire in our fire pit next to the lake or leisurely escape to the terrace to listen to the many sounds of the lake. There are two flights of stairs going from the parking area to the lakeside Pumphouse (which may be challenging for those with mobility concerns). We are located lakeside on London Road, just a short drive to Duluth's downtown restaurants, entertainment, and Canal Park. PL19-166. Road Construction;brPlease note: London Road (Hwy 61) will be under construction during the 2026 season, beginning in late April and continuing into the fall. During this project, northbound traffic on London Road will remain open, but southbound traffic will be detoured to Superior Street through portions of the work area.brFor guests, the main impact will be extra travel time when heading south toward downtown Duluth, Canal Park, and other western parts of the city. The detour is expected to affect travel patterns for much of the construction season, so we recommend allowing a little extra time when arriving, departing, or planning outings. Our goal is to make your stay as smooth as possible, and we simply want guests to be aware of the roadwork before arrival. For the most current project details and detour maps, please review the official MnDOT information below:brMnDOT project page:brhttps://www.dot.state.mn.us/d1/brprojects/londonroad/index.htmlbrDetour map PDF:brhttps://edocs-brpublic.dot.state.mn.us/.bredocs_public/DMResultSet/brdownload docld=39105429

The next year he established a newspaper in Duluth's west end called The Union Workman: The People Press. According to Duluth journalist Paul Lundgren the paper was the official organ of The Duluth Trades and Labor Assembly. The following year Wetmore began courting Helen Cody, sister of Buffalo Bill Cody. Hugh and Helen wed in July 1893, the same month Helen took over as the paper's business manager. That September the paper's name was changed to The Duluth Press. By then Buffalo Bill Cody owned half of the business and financed the construction of a building to house it along the upper 1900 block of west superior street. After the building opened in 1894 Helen hired her daughter Mary Jester as its city editor and organized the Zenith Press Club, consisting solely of women. The next year she advertised the publication as The Women's Paper of the Great Northwest. The periodical didn't last long, they published their final issue on August 29, 1896.
