Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often seen at the retreat. Researchers continue to identify new species and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives. brbrThe Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse species of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds.
