This remote area is truly magical, away from the bustling crowds of tourists; a retreat where you can rest and relax or go on an adventure!brbrWe named our unit Pog`s Place after a sweet little gecko who visits our outdoor lanai for a tiny treat of Passion, Orange, Guava juice.brbrThe SpacebrbrThis is a spacious true one bedroom unit that sleeps up to four people with a Cal King in the bedroom and a full size sofa sleeper in the living area. The unit entrance and bedroom face the mountain views; you will wake to the gentle call of doves on this side of the unit. The large bathroom is freshly painted and has original artwork on the walls. It has a tub and shower, equipped with body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. Our brand new on demand water heater gets hot water to you quickly! The guest closet has lots of extra bed linens, pillows and towels. The bedroom and bathroom are both on the entrance level. Then up a short flight of travertine steps is the open floor plan living room, full-size kitchen, and dining area all under a high vaulted ceiling which allows for a bright, airy space with great views from the large second floor lanai. Since this unit is located on the upper level of the building, there are no worries about noise above you. The full size kitchen has a peek through bar with beautiful new hardwood stools where you can relax and unwind with your favorite beverage. It has all you will need for cooking during your visit including some fun new items; a rice cooker and NutriBullet. It also houses your own stacked washer/dryer with supplies of detergent and dryer sheets. The living room has a comfortable seating area with a 48” flat screen TV above the bar, high speed internet, Apple TV, and cable. It also houses the full size, sofa sleeper with brand new mattress topper and bedding. The dining area has seating for four and is immediately adjacent to the kitchen. Just out the sliding doors you’ll find the second floor covered lanai which is very spacious at 6’ x 20’. It is wonderful for sunrise breakfast/coffee, sunset dinners, and star gazing at night; a great place to read a book in the upholstered lounge chair, or relax with a glass of wine and visit the resident geckoes, Pog and Gop. They work hard to keep down the bugs for us all, and are welcome residents.brbrThis unit has new travertine floors and professional custom upholstery throughout. Looking past the green golf course from the back patio is the beautiful blue of the Pacific. You can hear the waves crashing against the rock, which was so incredibly relaxing at night. Depending on how fast you walk, Black Sands Beach is just 5 minutes away and each time we visited, we were awed by the sea turtles that bask in the sun on the black sand. Although the waves were too rough for us to snorkel or swim (we were there in January), there is a lifeguard for others who are more experienced and daring. The condo was what we expected and was clean and had all basic kitchen and bathroom needs. The one bedroom is spacious with an adjacent bathroom, and the only bathroom in the condo. It was also nice to have access to the condo's washer and dryer and traveling with kids is dirty business! My younger son and I slept on the pull out sofa bed and found it to be not only easy to pull out and put back, but surprising comfortable. Plus, sleeping on the sofa bed meant that we were closer to the sounds of the crashing waves against the rock...not a bad exchange for an actual bed at all! We did not use the pool but it looked inviting. The grounds were kept clean and the office staff was friendly and helpful. Although I'd make sure you keep all doors closed due to uninvited bugs, sitting out on the patio made for some adorable guests. Tiny birds littered the green grass while the occasional gecko or two would casually scamper by. If you're into hiking, I'd also recommend taking a drive to Green Beach's parking lot (about a 20-25 minute drive away) and taking a gorgeous 5.5 mile round trip hike along the ocean before reaching Green Beach. Even if you're not into the hike, the locals are waiting to take people to the beach's cliff area (you have to walk down a steep hill to get to the actual beach) in their 4X4's for a fee (not sure how much since we didn't do it). However, be warned--there are no bathroom AT the parking lot or the hike or Green Beach. There were also no garbage cans that we could find, so just be aware. On your way out of the parking lot, just before highway 11, don't forget to stop at Hawaii's Local Buzz "farm". You can sample and buy delicious locally made coffees & seasoned or chocolate covered macadamia nuts, get water, and perhaps more importantly, meet their super cute tropical birds! There is also a deli/ice cream/souvenir store not far from the condo that professes to be located at the most southern tip of the US. You can sit outside and eat or take your food to the beach, as we did. We explored the park all morning, went back to swim at the black sand beach all afternoon and saw a ton of turtles, and then drove back to see the red glow of the volcano at night. The community is beautiful with breathtaking views in a completely undeveloped area. We live in the landlocked midwest so we wanted to stay near water and not in Volcano Village while we visited the National Park. This place was perfect. We loved the pool and the hot tub.

Downstairs, there is the entry way, bathroom with a shower, and a king bed in the bedroom, so the unit comfortably sleeps 4 people. A lovely ocean breeze usually blows through the condo, and ceiling fans upstairs and in the bedroom keep the air circulating. Volcanoes National Park is about a 45 minute drive away and well worth a visit. The only drawbacks were- golf course has been closed since 2018 and trying to schedule pool time (COVID precautions) was difficult and the hot tub is currently closed. Julie was quick to reply when I had a question and check in / out was easy. Nice to have the balcony with a nice view for breakfast and sitting outside. Boogieboard and other swimgear available in condo, though we did not use since we brought our own. Pool not available since it was under renovation (we were informed about this at the time of booking so not a problem for us). Bed very comfortable and big enough for three people. Cleaning, particularly the kitchen area, needs improvement and some of the kitchen gear is in need of an update. All in all good value for money. The ocean view and yard were perfect for adults and kids to enjoy! Bird watching out the back was spectacular. The kitchen is well equipped and we made all of our meals. We bought food in Kona and brought it with. The nearby black sands beach was dreamy! The kids played and snorkeled with sea turtles, eels, and rainbow colored fish...the sea was a little rough, so the kids wore life vests and dad was nearby. Julie was very responsive and had excellent communication. The pool and bbq area are nice. During the pandemic, you must reserve a time to go to the common areas. This was nice because the common areas were never crowded. Also, we were always able to reserve the time we wanted without a problem. All in all, it is a very quiet and relaxing place to stay. Also inside the closet you will have access to extra bedding, beach towels, beach cooler, an iron, an ironing board, a laundry hamper and plenty of hangers. The lanai (patio) is very private. Speaking of the lanai, “Wow!” is the usual response. Sweeping unobstructed ocean views that blend gently without interruption into an incredible mountain view. It was also very conveniently located to the Volcanoes National Park so it was good home base for us to explore the beach and national park. If you are interested in snorkeling or beach activities you will need to remember to bring your own as they are not provided by the condo and there are no rental places at the beach.
