Aloha! brOur country estate is in Onomea, 6 miles north of Hilo, on 5 tropical acres with garden and ocean views. Onomea Guest Suite is a private cottage with garden views of flowering royal Poinciana trees, sweeping monkey pod trees, mango, lychee, mountain apple trees, coconut palms, and many varieties of other palms. The most repeated description by our guests is 'peaceful'. The suite has a studio layout... bedroom, living room and kitchenette all in one ample main space, and a lovely stone-tiled bath with high ceilings and gorgeous light. Guests love the shower which feels like its outdoors because of all the high windows above the shower space. The covered lanai is enjoyable rain or shine for dining or relaxing. Our royal palm-lined road is one of the loveliest in all of Hawaii. Artists frequently come to paint it! Within walking distance is the old donkey trail to Onomea Bay, a breathtaking bay along the old Scenic Highway. You can also walk to the Hawaii Botanic Gardens and What's Shakin' Smoothie Stand (fresh fruit smoothies, wraps, sandwiches, coffee, tea.....)and by car, we are equi-distant to Volcano National Park, Waipio Valley and Mauna Kea Visitors Center, just of many other attractions in the area. (see more below at 'Things to Do').brA queen bed, plus a twin bed provides a comfortable sleeping for up to three. The kitchenette has enough cooking appliances that you won't miss the stovetop or oven. You'll find the barbecue on your lanai and many kitchen appliances on the countertop or in the cabinets. br(Don't forget to READ OUR REVIEWS!!)br A few notes about our guest suite....and us! ....... brOur guest space was completed in March 2011, a project lovingly created over two years. The bathroom and shower are wheelchair accessible and there are no steps between parking and entry to suite. My wife and I live in the main house which is an entirely separate building attached by a breezeway and a central courtyard with a fishpond and burbling fountain. Looking left you see the surfers and paddle boarders ride waves at Honoli'i Cove, and beyond you see several other headlands along the coastline to the north. Looking right you have a view of Hilo Harbor to the south, where cruise ships land for port of call, and Leleiwi Point off to the east. Especially during winter, whale sign dot Hilo Bay before you.brbrKAHOA HOUSE’s 3BR/3BA DESIGN ensures a comfortable and efficient stay for you and your family. Two master suites each feature king-size beds, ocean views, double vanities, and walk-in showers (one with steam!). The third bedroom is also set with a king bed (separated to two twin beds upon request), has a built-in granite desk, and an en suite bathroom with tub/shower. The bathrooms and kitchen are adorned in stone and granite, and wood floors stretch throughout the house. The long axis of the main living area, with its wooden floors & paneling, and panoramic views of the ocean below, give the house a nautical feel. The décor has a SE Asian influence with Buddhist artwork collected from travels in that region. The kitchen is well appointed for cooking family meals, including a nice set of All Clad stainless steel pots and pans, good knives, and a wide assortment of kitchen gadgets. The deep sink with double faucets and dish washer aid with cleanup. While the house is comfortable with ocean views from most rooms, you may still want to spend most of your time outside. Walk barefoot in the spongy green grass and admire the coconut palms swaying overhead. Dine al fresco on the main lanai. As the sun sinks below the ‘Aina behind you, watch the ocean and sky turn colors. Retire to the cozy, cushioned, rattan furniture for more conversation and another glass of wine. Or, move to one of the two decks on the other side of the house. The balmy Trade Winds make the outdoors pleasant well into the evening. Afterward, set the mood as you like indoors with lighting on dimmers. Tropical painting above bed.brbrBEDROOM 3:brBedroom 3 is on the pond side of the house, and overlooks the on-site brackish pond. It is bright and breezy, but is also the least quiet of the bedrooms due to the windows overlooking the nearby restaurant/parking lot. Also carpeted, and with a small closet. Wall mounted flat screen TV above bureau which matches the queen -sized teak bed set with side tables, with the ever present tropical finish. Bright art decorates the wall. The ceiling fan is wooden bladed.brbrPRIVATE BATHROOM:brThe private bathroom serving these two bedrooms are accessible only through the bedrooms, with two separate doors. Tile floors and a high ceiling with skylight, tile shower stall (no bathtub) and sturdy wooden cabinet with a single sink. Small windows in the shower stall and above the commode allow great circulation.brbrOUTDOOR DECK:brThe best room in the house. Large wooden deck with teak table and 6 matching Captain's chairs plus a large umbrella to keep the sun and/or rain off of your party. The Weber bar b q grill (charcoal fired) is ready to go when you arrive. Overlooking the Ice Pond and surrounded by avocado; mango; coconut; and banana trees. Watch the fish, birds, ducks, and people enjoy the life on and around the pond. Extremely relaxing and scenic. Wooden stairs down to the yard and the outdoor bathroom.brbrDOWNSTAIRS GREATROOM:brA hobbit-like door leads into the ground floor space of the house, basically a finished basement partly underground on one side. The Greatroom is built directly over the brackish fishpond. The railing separates you from the pond with both fresh fish (Koi) swimming with saltwater local fish and turtles. The water is a mix of fresh and salt, and both types of fish are able to thrive in this microenvironment. brbrYou can feed the fish, just watch or you can walk down the stone steps and actually enter the pond, swimming with the fish or just dangling your feet in the water. Enjoy the cycle of the water rising and falling with the ebb and flow of the tides. brbrNote that the two stairways connecting upstairs to downstairs are both outside the house, and that the single bathroom serving downstairs is accessed from the outside. It is recommended that small children (under 10) should probably stay downstairs with adult supervision.brbrDOWNSTAIRS BEDROOM 4:brMedium sized bedroom with low (6 2) ceiling, this tiled floor room offers a queen size teak bed set with tropical finishes and matching bureau. Both floor lamp and table lamps on side tables. No ceiling fans downstairs, circulation is via windows and the open walls by the fishpond.brbrDOWNSTAIRS BEDROOM 5:brAnother medium sized bedroom with low headroom, this carpeted bedroom has still another teak queen-sized bedroom set with matching bureau and a full-sized mirror. Side tables with lamps and a floor lamp provide lighting, while the single window provides mostly circulation. brbrLAUNDRY ROOM:brThe tiled floor laundry room has a washer (electric) and dryer (gas) and laundry facilities. With windows on two walls, this is the brightest and airiest of the enclosed rooms downstairs.brbrCOVERED LANAI:brOutside the back of the home on the ground floor is a covered lanai, underneath the second floor deck. With a picnic table and some folding chairs, this is a good place to hang out when it is rainy outside or while you wait for the paddlers to return. brbrTHE BOATHOUSE:brAn enclosed room over the pond which has storage area for the three kayaks (two singles and one tandem) plus paddles and accessories that come with the home. Additional water accessories are stored in a storage area portion of the Greatroom. It is quite convenient and easy to get the kayaks from the boathouse to the Ice Pond, and vice versa. brbrOUTSIDE BATHROOM:brThe bathroom serving the downstairs as well as the covered lanai and deck is in the rear corner of the home, and accessed via a tile pathway. This bathroom has enclosed sink in a wooden cabinet with commode, plus an outdoor shower for use when returning from the pond or bay. It has automatic lights for use when accessing the bathroom at night.brbrBACKYARD:brThe compact backyard fronts on both Ice Pond and the peaceful Kuhio Kalanianaole Beach Park. In addition to launching your boats at Ice Pond, you can also launch at the concrete boat ramp at the park. The park is great for kids, birthdays, and weddings. Parking lot is closed and locked at night by the County.

The house was originally built in 1936, over 20 years before Hawaii became a member of the United States.brbrWe have installed AC in the living room in May 2022. One of the bedrooms still has a window AC for those who need a little bit more. Opening the many windows and enjoying the fresh ocean breeze satisfies most guests. Our home was originally built a long time ago but it is modern while maintaining the character of a traditional Hawaii beach home. You will see geckos on the property and see the ocean horizon and birds from our picture windows. We almost always see sea turtles at the nearby beaches. It's best to drive to the beach first to ensure you are comfortable with the walk, especially if you have children with you.brbrWe offer 2 bedrooms and 2 baths with an office/library in our ocean view home with great snorkeling beach access. The beaches usually have calm waters, excellent snorkeling conditions, shade, tide pools and green sea turtles and are all just across the street with a short walk.
