Cabin

Historic Pioneer Cabin in the Heart of Canyon Country

Escalante, Utah, United States

In 2015 we embarked to renovate this pioneer home, built approximately 1890 and 7 miles from its current location, into a cozy space with modern-day amenities while retaining its authentic appeal. It took us a year and a half to build a foundation, plumb and wire it, sand and scrub, build cabinetry from barn wood, oil and paint, build furniture, and locate period pieces that were suitable for the feel of the cabin. There is a claw foot tub with a shower handle and a large, private outdoor shower with hot and cold water.brbrThe cabin is surrounded by gardens. Stunning views of the nearby mountains are seen from within the cabin and from the front and back porches. While relaxing on the porch it is common to see tractors slowly roll down Center Street to the neighboring fields to the south. The sights and sounds of chickens, horses, cows, sheep and the multitude of bird and insect species fill your senses. The night skies are one of the darkest skies in the U.S. A multitude of hiking trails for all levels of experience are only minutes from the cabin. Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, 5 miles west of the cabin, offers opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming, picnicking and hiking.brbrAs our guests, you have access to the use of the cabin, relaxing in the gardens, and harvesting fruit or veggies for your meals when available. If you need the use of a washer or dryer, please contact us. We are willing to share our personal appliances.

Private Vacation Home

Panoramic views on 50 private acres!

Escalante, Utah, United States

Come enjoy the big views from our beloved family home and find your heart's delight in canyon country. The home is a custom octagonal beauty with an open concept modeled after the Kiva construction of the local Ancestral Pueblo. Fully stocked kitchen with granite counters and a breakfast bar overlooks a 6-person dining area and a wall of windows with breathtaking views. The comfortable living area has two full sized couches, a leather click clack style futon and a big screen tv with streaming services. The master bedroom has a brand new cali king Leesa mattress and a spacious en suite. The second bedroom also has a full en suite bathroom and is ready for guests big and small (it's our kid's room when we stay there and has a few toys for your littles to enjoy if you bring them). There is a full sized bed and a full sized futon in the second bedroom. The house is full of art and crystals with high vaulted wooden ceilings, making the space feel open and inviting. But it's the incredible views from the glass walls in all rooms are really the star of the show.brbrSpeaking of stars, this house is perfect for stargazing. The light pollution is basically zero which affords you incredible views of the milky way, meteor showers and eclipses. But fear not: even out here in the middle of everywhere, the internet is strong! We have rural broadband with no limits, so you can stream anything and everything. I teach Zoom classes here with zero connectivity issues. There is, however, very little cell service in the area, so we recommend connecting to wifi and enabling wifi calling on your cell during your stay. We also have a house phone in case that isn't possible.brbrNestled in what's known as upper valley just 15 minutes west of the town of Escalante, we think this gated 50-acre property has perfect combination of privacy and accessibility. You will not see a single neighbor, but just down the road in either direction, you'll find all the amenities you need and the best outdoor recreation the world has to offer. 15 minutes east is the gorgeous town of Escalante, with great restaurants, awesome guide shops (Escalante Canyon Outfitters!), amazing hiking, proper coffee (Escalante Canyon Outfitters again!), and even an organic seasonal market and a pub, both rarities in southern Utah. Continue on another 15 minutes and you'll reach Calf Creek Recreation Area, then Boulder Mountain, and finally Capitol Reef National Park, the least-visited hidden gem of Utah's big 5, only 1.5 hours from our home base and worth every minute of that drive, named as one of AAA's most beautiful drives in the country every single year. 15 minutes to the west of our home, you'll find Kodachrome Basin State Park and the town of Tropic. Another 15 minutes and you're in Red Canyon State Park, then another 15 and you're in Bryce Canyon National Park. Continue on another 45 minutes and you'll find yourself at the North entrance of Zion National Park heading into the famous Carmel Tunnel. We're also close to some of the country's best hunting and we welcome hunting parties as we would any other pack of adventurers! brbrWINTER CONSIDERATIONS: Between Mid-November and March there is a possibility of snow on the long, sloped driveway. 4wd/Awd is highly recommended during this time. But this is also one of our absolute favorite times to visit. Our old Dodge and our Subaru have no trouble, and the weather is typically sunny and just warm enough that hiking is perfect with the right gear (a warm light coat, winter hat, hiking pole, and shoe chains if it's snowy). We're also only 2 hours from Brian Head, southern Utah's best ski mountain, just outside of Cedar City.brbrDISTANCE TO AIRPORTS: The house is about 5 hours from either Salt Lake City airport or Las Vegas Airport. There is also a small airport in Cedar City.

The bathroom has a bathtub, shower, Toto bidet, plush cotton towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, hair dryer, full-size washer and dryer, and laundry detergent. br brIn the warmer months, enjoy the private outdoor shower beneath the cliffs. Relax in the Adirondack chairs and enjoy the warmth of the hammered-steel propane fire pit while dinner cooks on the Weber grill.brbrThe SaltBrush Casita is 740 square-feet and has heat, air conditioning, WIFI, HD smart TV, ceiling fans, key pad for self check-in, and a 240 volt power outlet (NEMA 14-50R) for charging an electric vehicle. The queen sleeper sofa in the great room can accommodate a fifth guest. Outside the front door there is a Nest doorbell that can record external audio/video and be used to communicate.br brUtah has the highest concentration of certified International Dark Sky Parks and Communities in the world. Whether you’re a stargazer or night-sky photographer, SaltBrush Casita is the ideal place to experience the starscape. During the day, explore our eight acres with its small slot canyon and an abundance of wild flowers and grasses, Utah Juniper, piñon, and other native flora. brbrPerfectly situated, the SaltBrush Casita is the ideal base for your adventure. With colors transitioning through yellows, oranges, and reds, the Escalante area has some of the most uniquely beautiful landscape in the world. Away from the huge crowds, its slot canyons and sandstone cliffs often feel undiscovered.br brAt the Saltbush Casita, you can hike from the front door or take a short walk to see ancestral puebloan structures. The Grand Staircase-Escalante Visitor Center is less than five miles away, as is the Petrified Forest State Park. We’re also close to scenic Highway 12, designated one of the country’s All American Roads. It stretches among Bryce Canyon National Park, Kodachrome Basin, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Escalante, Boulder, Dixie National Forest, and Capitol Reef National Park. If you’re visiting the Magnificent Five, Escalante is a great basecamp. And if you want a change from the sculpted desert landscape, drive or cycle from the Casita to the top of Boulder Mountain, which is just 13 miles away. You will be greeted by pine forests, cool air, and small lakes where you can birdwatch or fly fish.br brWhile pets aren’t allowed, our jackrabbits and resident Kit Fox are welcome, provided they stay off the furniture.
