Best known for the great live music district on Frenchmen Street, the Marigny also offers neighborhood cafes & businesses, historic architecture, and more. It has the air of what the French Quarter was in it's golden days. It has a few small hotels, and many bed-and-breakfasts, as well as a number of good restaurants, coffee shops, and music venues. Architecturally, the Marigny is known for its many styles of Creole cottages, most of which date to the 19th century. Its heart is Washington Square Park (bounded by Frenchmen Street, Royal Street, Dauphine Street, and Elysian Fields Avenue). Frenchmen Street is the main nightlife district, with half a dozen live music clubs and just as many restaurants in four short blocks. At Mardi Gras, the Marigny is one of the city's hidden hot spots. Very popular with locals, who enjoy partying in the streets without the busy atmosphere of Bourbon Street. Crowds gather at the corner of Royal and Kerlerec (outside of R-Bar Inn) as well as at the intersection of Royal and Franklin. Elaborate costumes are the order of the day, along with brass bands and many drummers. Two weeks before Mardi Gras, the Marigny is also the starting place for the Krewe du Vieux, a satirical, raunchy parade in 19th-century Carnival style! Complete with small floats drawn by krewe members and mules. Local cafes, restaurants and music venues line Frenchmen Street. Known for its bohemian atmosphere, the Marigny is home to many artists and musicians, as well as a sizable gay and lesbian population. Among its notable residents are chef Paul Prudhomme, painter James Michalopoulas, and actors Harry Shearer and Jennifer Coolidge, who can be seen around town when they're not working in L.A. Local writers include New Orleans mystery writers, Julie Smith and J.M. Redmann, as well as Andrei Codrescu, Michael Swindle, and Kevin Allman. Frenchmen Street is in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood just below the lower edge of the Quarter. A 4 block stretch of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops mixed with live music venues make it one of the city's most hip places, catering more to locals than tourists (though tourists are certainly welcome, and welcomed). On any given night, one might find modern jazz, swinging traditional jazz, Latin American style music, rockabilly, and more within this small area.brbrbrbrGetting Around:brbrwalk to the french quarter and frenchmen street!

25 Historic Boutique Shotgun Mid-City Apartment

New Orleans, Louisiana, United States

Historic, charming 2 Bed 1 Bath apartment that is part of a double shotgun house located two blocks from beautiful City Park in Mid-City, the heart of New Orleans. brbrMy house is five blocks (7 min walk) from the Canal St. streetcar, which will lead you straight to the French Quarter or allow you to connect to the St. Charles line to visit the the beautiful Garden District of Uptown New Orleans.brbrBuilt in the 1920s, this 2 bedroom apartment has one queen sized bed, one full sized bed, and one sleeper sofa, accommodating 4-6 people with ease and comfort. The floor plan (approx. 950 sq. ft.) is a typical style “shotgun” with the original pine hardwood floors, 12’ ceilings, antique doors and mantels. The apartment has many recent renovations and updates with local style and creative décor while keeping the original architectural elements to help you feel like you are living like a local while enjoying your visit!brbrThe front porch private entry doorway opens into the front den and living room including a movie theater style sofa for two, two chairs, two antique libraries, antique fireplace (nonfunctioning), and 40 flat screen smart TV with full cable and WiFi access to ensure you are comfortable while relaxing from your New Orleans adventures. The two precious libraries act as the dividing wall between the den and living room, where you will find a dining table for 4. Down the short hallway you will find a full bath with a shower/bathtub to your right, and a little further down another private entrance/exit via a side door to the house. This hallway then leads to the first private queen bedroom equipped with a large closet, spacious dresser, and 40 inch Smart TV. The next room is a fully equipped, newly renovated kitchen with granite countertops and brand new stainless steel appliances. The last room in the house is the second private bedroom equipped with an open wardrobe and 40 flat screen TV with Google chrome cast. This bedroom has a back door that leads directly outside to the back patio, which includes access to the washer and dryer located in a covered area of the back shed. Note that whoever you have to walk through the queen bedroom to get to the bathroom if you are staying in the full bedroom in the back. Other options are to go out the back door and enter the house through the side door or front door to aces the bathroom with out walking through the queen bedroom.brbrThe house is located at the crossroads of two wonderful neighborhoods referred to as Mid-City and City Park. Mid-City, which is known as the heart of New Orleans is a place where locals live as a neighborhood rather than just an area of New Orleans. It is a place filled with a community spirit that resonates with its residents old and new. Mid-City has become the new, revitalized and young neighborhood of New Orleans and is attracting young professionals from all over the country who have recently relocated to New Orleans working in the medical fields. With the nearby addition of shopping centers and restaurants, Whole Foods, expansion of City Park attractions and the construction of the new medical facilities on Tulane Avenue and the Veterans Affairs Hospital to be completed in 2016, Mid-City is the place to be!brbrJust a couple of blocks away is City Park, one of the nation’s oldest urban parks with 1,300-acres of beautiful grounds, serene water gardens, ancient live oak trees and magical offerings. The park features the New Orleans Museum of Art, putt-putt golf course, regular 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, play grounds, Botanical Gardens, Besthoff Sculpture Garden, Train Garden, City Splash, Pan American Stadium and various music and theatrical productions throughout the year. The park also offers a host of family-friendly activities, including children’s larger-than-life storybook sculptures in “Storyland” and the one-of-a-kind antique wooden carousel in the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park – a hand-carved marvel of “flying horses” that has been a family favorite for nearly 100 years. brbrEnjoy a beautiful day on the water at “Big Lake” in City Park with paddle boat rentals, gondola rides, fishing, wildlife viewing, kayaking, and canoeing. Walking/jogging trails, biking paths, horse back riding, yoga, bike and surrey rentals, basketball courts, soccer fields, roller blading, and more are just some of the many outdoor activities available in City Park. Spend a lazy afternoon with the ducks, swans and geese on the park’s historic bayous and lagoons, while sipping on a café au lait at Morning Call. City Park is home to the world’s largest stand of mature live ancient oaks, modern art and everything in between .brbrIf you want to party like a local during Mardi Gras, we are in the midst of the Endymion parade route with the comfort of not being directly on it. Just 2 blocks away is the staging of the massive optical floats and where the famous Mardi Gras Endymion parade begins at the City Park Avenue and Orleans intersection on the Saturday before Fat Tuesday. Locals start planting their marks and setting up camp days in advance in preparation for the Mid-City party of the year. You can enjoy the craziness but not be stuck in it as we are tucked away in a convenient section of our block. You can even host your own party living like a local! brbrWe assure that you will feel like you are “living like a local” in our home while you visit New Orleans!

The Main Street of the area is Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard, formerly known as the Dryades Street commercial district for over 100 years. It is a nationally accredited Main Street, as well as a member of the Louisiana Main Streets Network, as well as a Louisiana Cultural District. brbrbrbrbrbrThe Lower Garden District is famous for its parks, restaurants, and history!brbrbrbrThe area was originally developed between 1832 and 1900 and is considered one of the best-preserved collections of historic mansions in the Southern United States. The 19th-century origins of the Garden District illustrate wealthy newcomers building opulent structures based upon the prosperity of New Orleans in that era. brbrbrbrThis whole area was once a number of plantations, including the Livaudais Plantation. It was sold off in parcels to mainly wealthy Americans who did not want to live in the French Quarter with the Creoles. It became a part of the city of Lafayette in 1833, and was annexed by New Orleans in 1852. The district was laid out by New Orleans architect, planner, and surveyor Barthelemy Lafon.brbrbrbrOriginally the area was developed with only a couple of houses per block, each surrounded by a large garden, giving the district its name. In the late 19th century, some of these large lots were subdivided, as uptown New Orleans became more urban. This has produced a pattern for much of the neighborhood: of any given block having a couple of early 19th-century mansions surrounded by gingerbread-decorated late Victorian period houses. Thus, the Garden District is now known for its architecture more than for its gardens per se.brbrbrbrGetting Around:brbrVery close to St Charles Streetcar. Very short Lyft/Uber rides to French Quarter.brbrbrbrWalking distance to downtown, close to St Charles. Very quick Uber or Lyft to get you to the French Quarter!brbrbrbrWith a walkability score of 89, there’s no need to rent a car for your stay. The streetcar line passes four blocks from the house to take you through the Garden District, Uptown, and the French Quarter. Connecting to other streetcar lines, you can also access City Park and the Marigny.brbrbrbrFor everything else you can easily walk or take a short Lyft.brbrbrbrOther Things to Note:brbrNo smoking. brbrNo pets. brbrNo parties or events. brbrbrbrbrbrIf there’s anything – big or small – that we can do to make your stay better, please let us know.
