My Mermaid Studio is lovely and spacious with a Cal King bed, a queen sofa, kitchenette, full size fridge and my favorite custom, outside shower is delightful. Floaties are supplied as well as some beach towels. brbrThe cooling breezes and the sun-warmed, dry climate is yearlong on the South Kona Coast, and the homes’ location is at an ideal elevation for temperature, never too hot, or chilly. Sitting at 600 feet elevation from the ocean Puhala Hale rarely gets too warm with daily average temperatures in the mid to low 80’s and in the evening temperatures average in the mid-60’s. A whole house fan offers extra cooling for evening comfort. Every bedroom has a ceiling fan and three have sliders with screen doors, the 4th bedroom has amazing night breezes that come down mountain so stays cool. The main living areas also have multiple ceiling fans and screen doors to let the cool ocean breezes in.brbr The Puhala Hale is located 33 miles south from Kailua-Kona, and 63 miles from the Volcano. The 60-minute coastal drive south of Kailua-Kona through coffee country is well worth it to enjoy this rural retreat that is still convenient and within a ten-minute drive to groceries and more. Milolii is a quiet coastal area, perfect to relax and enjoy the layback Hawaiian lifestyle, though close enough to take short trips to golf, shop and fine dine. Puhala Hale is convenient to Kona (approx. 1 hr drive) and 1.25 hrs. to the Kona International Airport, as well as a reasonable drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, City of Refuge, Painted Church, Green Sand Sand Beach, Ho'okena Beach Park, Punalu'u Bakery, South Point, Pu'uhonua O' Honaunau, and the Coffee Belt. brbrThe Milolii area is world renowned for its pristine ocean waters and awesome deep-sea fishing opportunities. Guests are welcome to ship in their scuba gear if they are divers. This coastal area allows you to explore cliffs, blow holes, tide pools, caves and lava tubes while hiking along historical sites and ancient walls. brbrThe Puhala Hale is a short drive down to the water and beaches where snorkeling and scuba diving is world class. Humpback Whale season is Dec.-March. So whale watching (and hearing at night) can become your favorite pastime. Five hundred feet from the bay, nestled among the palm trees and fragrant plumeria blossoms is the site of your next vacation. Let us Big Isle you!brbrHale Hanai is a family-friendly two-story vacation rental home that will give you a taste of old Hawaii, away from the crowds, with a large private yard abounding in fragrant flowers, bananas, and coconuts. 'Hanai' is a word Hawaiians use to designate adopted family. While staying in our home, you are our adopted family.brbrUpstairs, Mom and Dad can relax and enjoy their own private living room with views of the bay. The Alii (royalty) room is furnished with a California King bamboo canopy bed, a seating area, and a lanai from which to view some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. There is a fully equipped kitchen and a dining room with a table that seats eight, as well as a china hutch with dishes for that special meal.brbrDownstairs, there is a separate living room and a small dining table to enjoy a sandwich or snack. The expansive outdoor lanai, with swimming pool and BBQ, is perfect for lazy days, outdoor dining, enjoying sunsets and stargazing.brbrThis is a lovely house for family and small gatherings of friends but there are no parties allowed and total guest number may not exceed 6 people booked to stay overnight with no more than10 allowed on the property at any one time.brbrThis historic house was built in 1955 as the Manager’s house for Kealia Ranch. It was designed by noted local architect Albert Ives who, early in his career, designed the additions and alterations to what is now known as the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. Native materials such as Koa, Ohia, and lava rock were sourced and finished on-island by local artisans. In 1957 an annex was added across the courtyard with additional bedrooms and baths. The old ranch brand is inscribed in the brick walkway at the top of the entrance stairs.brbrThe house is near Ho’okena Beach - a wonderful sparkling bay bordered by a black and white sand beach. Located conveniently halfway between Kona and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hale Kai makes a great base from which to explore the Hilo and Kona side of the island.brbrLulled to sleep by moonlight on the water, Hale Kai will flow into you as you enjoy the moonlight and stars on the water. brbrBeaches near the Home: 3 beaches lie close to the house. Sea Cave Beach is a 20 minute hike South & hosts a cool sea cave where one can swim. Beyond the sea cave, the beach is about two hundred yards wide & deep. It is a sand & pebble beach & provides great swimming, sunbathing & snorkeling unless there is a large winter swell.brbrThe second beach is at Milolii Beach Park where sand pockets are surrounded by lava & coral to form a very quiet wading area for kids with great swimming, snorkeling & scuba further out. Great place for kids to play in the tidepools. Milolii Beach Park is about a 5 minute drive from the house.brbrThe third & by far the most spectacular beach is located at Honamolino Bay, a 5 minute drive & then a 20 minute walk from the historic yellow church. It has been touted as one of the most beautiful beaches in all the islands. A true tropical paradise, the water is almost always very calm with many coconuts palms along a crescent of black sand. brbrLocation, Location Location: Located conveniently between Kona and Volcano's National Park, this home is a great base from which to explore the island. The lushness of Hilo Town (The City of Orchids) is a beautiful drive through the rain forests of Hawaii Volcano's National Park. The nightlife and restaurants of Kona are less than an hour's drive from the house.brbrThe area is quiet and serene with stunning sunsets and lots of room to explore. The Kings Trail runs through here and can be walked for many miles. The kayaks that come with the house can also be used to explore miles and miles of coastline. Secret beaches, sea caves and lots of marine life can be discovered with a trip either up or down the coast. You will see parts of Hawaii that very few visitors ever see. If you are lucky, the local Spinner Dolphins, Green Sea Turtles and Humpback Whales may choose to swim with you. A once in a lifetime experience!brbrNational Parks Near Hale Kai: Haunaunau National Historical Monument is North of the house about half an hour and features a comprehensive look back into the ancient Hawaiian culture with a reconstruction of the 'City of Refuge'. Watch an outrigger canoe be carved from a single log as well as sea turtles haul out of the bay. Lots of great info in a beautiful setting. A short walk North at a site called 'Two Step' also hosts some of the islands best snorkeling and diving and a chance to swim with dolphins.brbrHawaii Volcano National Park is located about an hour's drive East and features one of the only places in the world where one can hike and watch fresh red hot lava waterfall into the sea. Petroglyphs, rainforests, lava caves, a world class visitor center, Hawaii Volcano National Park should not be missed. Guests should easily plan on spending at least a full day here exploring the park and another full day in Hilo hunting out waterfalls and enjoying the Tsunami Museum among other attractions.
