Augustus - Hilltop Medieval Escape with Panoramic View

Spello, Perugia (Umbria), Italy

Casa Spello's convenient location in the heart of the historic center and its outstanding panoramic views are what makes this historic medieval property one of the most desirable in the region. Staying at Casa Spello is an experience. As our guests put it: 'It oozes charm'.brbrOver 500 years old, Casa Spello is a newly renovated medieval property, located in the historic center of Spello, a hillside village with a rich history which predates Roman times. The property, nestled within the ancient city walls, boasts one of the most panoramic views in all of Spello; on a clear day, you can see the church towers of Assisi, Perugia, Montefalco, Foligno and the rolling hills covered in olive groves and vineyards which surround Spello. Our large garden/orchard, surrounded by an 1800 year old Roman wall, is an ideal setting for al fresco dining, sunset watching over a glass of Montefalco wine, or sipping coffee before the day's adventures.brbrThe property is over 500 years old, restored by a local architect to provide it with all the modern amenities, while preserving its genuine medieval ambiance. It once was a home with two large 'cantinas' (cellars) where the family used to make wine and press their olive oil. It is now available for rent on a short-term or long-term basis.brbrOriginally it was built with hand carved mountain stone - a beautiful peach color stone which came from the nearby Subasio Mountain.brbrThe apartment is elegantly furnished with antique-style and rustic furnishings, and has a fully equipped kitchen for your cooking pleasure. There is also a fireplace. It is tastefully decorated with Umbrian handcrafted fixtures such as hand-blown glass, tiles and hand-painted ceramics from nearby Deruta. This apartment sleeps two to four people. The convenient location of Casa Spello makes it easy to walk to the wonderful local restaurants, markets, boutiques and train station in this quaint village.brbrFor larger parties, the Augustus (1 BR, sleeps 4) and Tiberius (3 BR, sleeps 6) apartments can be opened to each other. The Augustus apartment has direct access to the garden.brbrbrUtilities are NOT included in the pricing for bookings of 29 days and more. They are charged separately based on usage.

Luxury villa in Spello

Spello, Umbria, Italy

Summary:brThis is a very stylish 2 bedroom luxury villa in Spello. It is nestled against the town walls and on the cobbled streets of Spello, a stunning Umbrian hilltop town. It's beautifully furnished and well equipped with private lawned garden. The bedroom enjoys wonderful views over the countryside.brbrThe Space:brInside, this luxury villa in Spello is exceptionally stylish, furnished with pieces from around the world which have been collected by the owner on her extensive travels. Her attention to detail and eclectic mix of styles has imbued the property with a character and warmth that is rarely found in a holiday home. brbrOriginally a simple stone building on the edge of Spello's town walls, this luxury villa in Spello has been completely re-designed and restored so that the overall feel is now fresh and contemporary. brbrGuests enter the property via a stylish lobby. A bright Moroccan rug and cushions adds colour. However, the eye is drawn along the stone path and raised flower beds to the spacious garden on your left. Straight ahead a covered outdoor seating area sits adjacent to the open plan kitchen and living area. brbrAs guests enter this luxury villa in Spello, they will see the pretty, practical but perfectly furnished kitchen and living space. On the right is the kitchen and dining area. To the left there is a comfortable, linen-covered sofa opposite a fireplace with a modern flat screen television set on a low table. A French-style cafe table and chairs, linen blinds and curtains and a pair of old Belgian metal shutters (hiding china and cutlery) add character to the open-plan space. The floors throughout are a soft, taupe resin finish and the accent colour is Hermes orange. It is a chic, cheerful and modern space. brbrAn arched doorway leads to two bedrooms and a bathroom. The master bedroom truly is a peaceful and romantic retreat, with breathtaking views over farmlands and the Chiona hills beyond. The king-size bed has a natural linen cover and the curtains are made from fine Indian saris bought in Pondicherry. Wall hung clothes hooks have been copied from a traditional Italian design and there are linen-lined baskets for folded clothes. A pair of vintage, red velvet chairs perfectly pull together the colours of the Moroccan rug and the stripes in the curtains. brbrAdjacent to this room is the smaller second bedroom. This room is fresh and bright with its red, orange and white colour scheme. The curtains are a mix of sari fabric and white linen. A cosy Tyrol blanket and Etro cushions add texture to this charming room. Clothes hooks and baskets are provided as in the master bedroom. brbrBoth bedrooms share the gleaming white modern bathroom that this luxury villa in Spello boasts. A large shower, good directional lighting, an oversize hot towel rail and wall mirror combine to make bathing a delight. brbrOutside, this luxury villa in Spello has a large private garden, enjoying both shaded areas under pergolas or bright sunshine on the green lawns. This is a real rarity in such an ancient town. Rosemary, sage, verbena, thyme and lavender scent the air whilst pomegranates ripen in the trees in the Autumn and climbing roses wind their way up a pergola built against ancient stone walls. brbrFinally, an outside annexe houses a washing machine and tumble dryer, ensuring that the property is both practical as well as luxurious!brbrGuest Access:brGuests have sole use of the entire property and gardens.brbrThe Neighborhood:brThe central location of this luxury villa in Spello within the town means guests can walk to a number of restaurants and yet it has the feel of being in the heart of rural Umbria. Spello itself is an enchanting hillside town. It has a peacefulness and elegance about it that you can't fail to fall in love with, whilst the town's restaurants are famed for their superb cuisine and excellent wines. brbrThis luxury villa in Spello also makes an excellent base from which to explore the wider area. Orvieto, Todi, Citta di Castello, Gubbio and Spoleto are all within easy reach along with the highly praised wine producing region of Montefalco. There are numerous activities to enjoy too including horse riding, hiking, cycling, rafting and sailing as well as cross-country skiing in the Winter, making it an ideal holiday destination all year round.brbrPlease note that, effective 1 June 2023, the municipality of Spello has imposed a city tax of 2.50 euros per person per night. This must be paid locally on arrival in cash.brbrGetting Around:brA car is not required since you can walk to all the shops and restaurants within Spello. Starting from the south (the area of Borgo) climbing up to Porta dell’Arce (the Belvedere), you can visually cover the history of a place where you can breathe in the ancient Umbrian, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance presence. On top of a medieval tower stands an olive-tree, symbol of peace and of the most typical local product, the extra virgin olive oil.brThe town fascinates with marvelous architecture, compressed in a rather tiny area.brThe Medieval town was built on the Roman foundations. The hikers love to get lost in the town’s streets web. In summer its streets get decorated with hundreds of flowers and justly is called one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Spello is all texture—rose coloured stone walls, crumbling terracotta roof tiles, stone pathways, and weathered wooden doors.brWherever you will go, it will lead you somewhere nice. Actually, it is even recommended to get lost in the streets of Spello – it enables you to feel the spirit of the village. Friendly and hospitable locals are always ready to chat and direct you.brTo experience the countryside you can hike along the Roman Aqueduct above town, the path takes you through peaceful olive groves with amazing views of Spello in the distance.brA great time to visit is in June during the INFIORATA FLOWER FESTIVAL when the streets are covered with intricate flower designs.brThese days, more than 2000 people work for about three months in preparation for the all-night labor before the feast day. They now lay out 80 glorious floral petal carpets which will cover the streets and piazzas of medieval Spello on the morning of the Feast of Corpus Domini.brbrACCESSIBILITYbrIt is possible to reach the building by car and there is a spacious lift in the building, however from the entrance door of the apartment to the living and sleeping floor, there are 19 steps. They are comfortable steps, quite large, however we don't recommend this property to guests with severe mobility restrictions. In addition, from the living area there are a few more steps to reach the rooftop terrace. The apartment itself is spacious and comfortable, on one level.brbrDISTANCESbrSpello is the perfect base for exploring Umbria, with easy access to other towns by train and car.brSpello neighboring towns and how to get to them:brbrFree motorway (2 kms)brTrain station at easy walking distance (20 minutes) taxi service availablebrFoligno (approx 10 minutes drive - 15 mins by train)brAssisi (approx 15 minutes drive - 15 mins by train)brBevagna (approx 15 minutes drive)brTrevi approx 25 minutes drive - 20 mins by train)brMontefalco (approx 30 minutes drive drive)brPerugia (approx 30 minutes drive - 30 mins by train)brSpoleto (approx 30 minutes drive - 30 mins by train)brTodi (approx 50 minutes drive - 1 hour, 30 by train)brGubbio (approx 60 minutes drive)brCortona, for those of you that liked the Under a Tuscan Sun book (approx 60 minutes drive, 1 hour,30 by train)brOrvieto (approx 1 hour 30 minutes drive - 2 hours by train)brSiena (approx 2 hours drive - 3 hours by train)brFlorence (approx 2 hours 10 minutes drive - 2 hours, 30 by train)brRome (approx 2 hours 30 minutes drive - 2 hours by train)brbrOther one-day trips worth considering:brLake Trasimeno (approx 60 minutes drive)brCascate delle Marmore (larger waterfalls in Europe) (approx 60 minutes drive)brFonti del Clitunno (Clitunno Roman Springs) - (Approx 25 minutes drive)brOther cities in Tuscany: San Gimignano, Pienza, Montalcino, Volterra.brbrWHAT TO DO DURING THE STAY... brART, GASTRONOMY, TOURS, NATURE, SPORT, CULTURE, RELAX brInternational Art festivals, local food festivals brCooking service at the property, on demand brAntique markets (Trevi, Perugia and Pissignano) brWine Tours in the vineyards and cellars brActive Days (guided or self-guided walks/hikes in the surrounding forests - cycling - river rafting - hiking, free climbing et.) brBike tours followed by pic-nic lunches prepared by a local chef brhorse ridingbrTruffle Hunting Excursion followed by lunch including trufflesbrHot baloon tours around Assisi and Spello areabrClassic City Tours in Umbria and nearby Tuscany brCooking Classes and demonstration at the property or other locationsbrFarm-to-table toursbrGourmet Tours (to include olive oil, cheese, cereals, cured meats); brWinter fun (snow rackets trekking/cross country skiing) in the mountains brSPA (at easy driving distance from the villa) brForaging Excursions followed by tastings (mushrooms, asparagus, edible flowers and wild herbs); brEspecially suitable for children (Pizza making, Truffle hunting with dogs, Riding with donkeys in the mountains followed by picnic, Farm visits, outdoor adventure park and more)
