Vehicles of any type can make it to this home however if there has been a heavy rain, a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended. Although large rainstorms in the desert are rare, it is best to stay aware of the forecast during your stay. The best thing to do is to watch the 10-day forecast to determine if rain is going to be a factor for you stay. Hosts will offer flexibility around large rainstorms. * Road improvements are currently planned to add gravel to the lowest/softest part of the road to increase drivability after rainstorms.brbrThe road this house is on extends beyond the house and connects to a network of ranch roads that are fun to hike and bike. Please do not wander off the road as all of the land along the roads are private property.brPlease take a moment to ensure your guest count is accurate at the time of booking. brbrOFF GRID Home: The house is on city electric, however the water supply is rainwater catchment. All members of your party must conserve water to the best of their ability during your stay. Short showers are the best way to conserve water. brbrROAD CONDITIONS: The road to Infinite Skies Retreat is maintained regularly, but it may become impassible during and shortly after any rainfall. Except in emergency situations, please DO NOT attempt to drive on Gate 9 Road during wet conditions. Please do your best to be aware of the weather forecast. A 4WD or AWD vehicle is highly recommended. Please obey the posted speed limit of 25mph and use extra caution at night.brbrFIRES: A fire pit is available for your use; however, there are often local burn bans in effect. Please refer to the public notices on Brewster County’s website for additional information. The provided fire pit is generally compliant for use during basic burn bans, but drier conditions may warrant stricter bans. No other fires are permitted on the property. brbrCharcoal grills are not permitted. brNo fireworks. brbrPETS: Pets are not allowed at Infinity Skies Retreat. brbrACCESSIBILITY: This home has two flights of stairs (34 stairs in total), and no bedrooms on the lower level.brbrNO DIRT BIKES OR ATV`s ALLOWED: all of the surrounding roads are private and the neighbors hate these disturbances and call the police on folks that are riding on the private roads. brbrQUIET HOURS: Sound travels easily in the desert. Quiet hours are from 9:00pm until 7:00 am. brbrEVENTS: We would love to help you host your events, but prior approval is required. Message us with event inquiries!brbrEXTRA GUESTS: No extra guests are allowed on property beyond the total number of guests that are booked on the reservation without prior permission. There will be a $100 charge for us to clean up confetti. brbrNOISES: The house is constructed almost entirely of metal. The steel frame means substantial stability during heavy desert winds, but a side effect of this is some expansion and contraction during the heating of the day and cooling of the night. You may periodically hear some slight creaking and knocking noises from the outer frame and upper floor as this occurs. It is perfectly normal and to be expected. brThe water pump below the aircraft fuselage will run whenever it needs to supply water to the rest of the house. It is usually just for a few seconds, but it may startle you if you are standing near it.brbrWATER PRESSURE: This home may appear to have low water pressure, especially when you first turn on a faucet. This is quite normal and is another side effect of remote desert living. It is a result of water tanks being used in conjunction with a pump system to feed water throughout the house. When you first turn on a faucet, flush a toilet, or run any other water, the flow will be limited for 20-30 seconds until the pump automatically kicks in. When the pump kicks in, expect water pressure to rapidly increase. Do not be alarmed at the initial low water flow, and instead consider it an additional method of conservation. brThe toilets my produce a gurgling noise after being flushed. This may occur due to air pockets in the water line as the water pump kicks in.brbrTRAILS: Please remain on marked trails only while exploring the property. A trail map is included with your Guest Welcome Packet. Use of all trails is at your own risk and is limited to hiking only (with the exception of vehicular roads, such as Gate 9 Road). Please note that trails have loose rocks and steep drop-offs, and are not advisable for young children. You must be a guest of Infinite Skies Retreat to utilize hiking trails on the property. Stay on the trails. brbrHUNTING/GATHERING: Hunting is prohibited on the property, as is collection of any live animal. Please do not dig up or collect any plants from the property, including cacti. brbrSECURITY: There are two outdoor surveillance cameras on the property for your saftey - one looking up the driveway and one overlooking the parking area. These cameras are not monitored live for you privacy, but footage is available for a very limited time in case of incident. brbrALCOHOL/DRUGS: Smoking or drug use of any kind is strictly prohibited both indoors and outdoors. Consumption of alcohol should be in moderation and only for those of legal age. We ask that you refrain from using any trails or roads during, or shortly after, the consumption of alcohol. Please use proper judgement!brbrDAMAGE/THEFT: Guests are responsible for any damage sustained to the property during their stay – this includes both the house and any recreational amenities, such as trails. Respect the house, the surrounding property, and anything in the house as you would your own, and leave it whole for other guests to enjoy after you. Theft of any kind will not be tolerated and will be treated in accordance with the law. brbrGUEST ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: By accepting these house rules and booking your stay, you are representing your party as guests of Infinite Skies Retreat for the duration of your stay. I acknowledge that I have read the Infinite Skies Retreat house rules, I further acknowledge that I fully understand each item set forth in this document, and I will ensure my party complies with each item in its entirety.brbrLate checkouts without prior approval may be billed for an additional night if it interferes with our housekeepers ability to get started on time.

La Paloma Triste: Classic Adobe Near Big Bend NP

Terlingua, Texas, United States

Summary:brLa Paloma Triste: Classic adobe vacation home. Minutes from Terlingua and Big Bend National Park.brbrThe Space:brStep back in time at this vintage Terlingua adobe. La Paloma Triste is an ideal escape from the madness of modern life. This is the quintessential Terlingua vacation home.brbrLa Paloma Triste (The Sad Dove) is a classic adobe home near Willow Spring and just minutes from Terlingua with excellent views of the Chisos Mountains and Willow Mountain. Built in the 80’s, with antique doors, windows, fixtures, and furnishings reclaimed from much older homes in Mexico and the Southwest, this cozy home blends modern conveniences with genuine rustic charm. Whether relaxing by the wood burning stove or enjoying the views from the porch swing, you’ll feel as if you stepped back in time to the pioneer days of the Wild West.brbrThere is plenty of room to relax with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a large living room, one and a half bathrooms, a spacious porch and covered parking, not to mention forty private acres of pristine desert habitat. The main bedroom features a queen sized four poster bed, antique armoire, antique dresser and a private bath with a shower. The second bedroom has two walls full of windows with breathtaking views of the Chisos Mountains and nearby Bee Mountain. The living room has an antique wood burning stove (wood provided), rustic built-in shelves filled with artifacts and other items of local interests, and comfortable seating. The fully stocked kitchen has a new gas stove, antique sink, rustic shelving, and a classic pine and cedar table that was built by the owners. The large back porch has a porch swing for two with amazing views of the Chisos Mountains and Bee Mountain. The carport protects your vehicle from the west Texas sun and our infrequent storms. brbrOf course, the main attractions are outside. Take time to enjoy the solitude of the Chihuahuan desert and Willow Spring. The area around the house is landscaped with native plants, interesting rocks, and rusty pioneer artifacts that were collected over many years by the original owner. You will also want to visit Big Bend National Park, the Rio Grande River, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Terlingua Ghost Town, and our various restaurants and shops. If you don’t have time on this trip, you’re welcome to return again and again.brbrThe views of the night sky are beyond simple description. The Big Bend region has the darkest nights (lowest light pollution) of anywhere in the continental US. brbrAs the song says, “the stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas”. They’re even bigger and brighter here in the Bend. When the moon is out, you’ll be amazed at how bright and clear it shines. When the moon is not out, you’ll be stunned by the countless stars and the light and dark bands of the Milky Way. In the hour or two after sunset and before sunrise, you can often see the International Space Station and other satellites racing across the night sky. Shooting stars are visible throughout the year, especially during the Perseid and Geminid meteor showers.brbrCheck out “VisitBigBend.com” for suggestions of things to do and see during your stay. Explore the parks, raft the river, go horseback riding, take scenic drives, go mountain biking, visit the ghost town, eat out, enjoy the local nightlife including live music at several small venues, watch the wildlife, or just relax on the porch with your favorite book. Return home exhausted and inspired from endless adventures or well-rested and refreshed from escaping the rush of modern life. The choices are all yours. Regardless of your plans, La Paloma Triste (The Sad Dove) is an ideal home away from home for your visit the Big Bend.

Easy Access for All Vehicles.br• Small Solar Powered Cabin with Covered Parkingbr• Most Affordable Big Bend Vacation Rental br• Easy Access for all Vehicles. Near Pavementbr• Evaporative Cooler Powered by Solar, No ACbrbrThe Space:brMPORTANT DISCLOSURES. PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING:brLIMITED AIR COOLING: br-Cooling is provided by an evaporative cooler. Guests expecting inside summertime temps in the low 70’s or wanting to run the evaporative cooler constantly should consider a different property. We would be happy to recommend other lodging options. brSOLAR-POWERED HOME: br-No electronic devices other than those provided or chargers for phones and consumer electronics. br-Absolutely no electric device with heating elements of any type. br-If you rely on medically necessary electronics, we would be happy to recommend a different property.brbrRingtail Cabin is small, but it has a full kitchen and large bathroom.br brSpend less cash and burn less carbon.brbrRingtail Cabin is an ideal vacation rental for budget minded visitors, anyone wanting to conserve fossil fuels, or anyone needing access for a low clearance vehicle or motorcycle. brbrDon't be fooled by the low price, solar panels, or easy access. This cozy cabin is very well appointed with a full kitchen and comfortable furnishings, the solar system is backed-up by a propane generator, and the nearest neighbor is over a quarter mile away.br brEnjoy the mountain views, amazing sunrises, spectacular sunsets, and stunning starry skies from the Ringtail property, or drive into the nearby parks, Terlingua, or the Ghost-Town for all the adventure and entertainment that the Big Bend has to offer.brbrThe Neighborhood:brTERLINGUA RANCH: Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and including much of the town of Terlingua, Terlingua Ranch is a private subdivision of over 190,000 acres, divided into 9,500 tracts owned by about 5,000 individuals and crisscrossed by 1,100 miles of dirt and rock roads. Tracts range from five acres to several hundred acres. It is some of the most rugged and scenic land in Texas. brbrBack in the 1960’s, the Ghost Town and much of what later became “Terlingua Ranch” was owned by racing legend and car designer extraordinaire, Carol Shelby and some of his friends. The decided to promote the area by holding a chili cook-off in the then abandoned Ghost Town. That little stunt of a cook-off grew into CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) which now hosts nearly 500 chili cook-offs around the nation and internationally, all leading up the championship cook-off every year in Terlingua. Shelby and friends later subdivided the Ranch and started selling it off to hunters and rugged naturalists. Over the decades, the area was reborn and an eclectic community of nature lovers, artists, musicians, adventurers, and folks just wanting to escape from “civilization” has grown and started to resettle this rough country. brbrPeople have come and gone. New buildings have risen while others have fallen, Dreams have been realized and others crushed. Through it all, the land remains. The harsh desert and vast openness encourages positive development and slowly swallows up and recovers from past abuses. The old cinnabar mine sites and ranching outposts persist as relics and ghost towns, some redeveloped, some carefully preserved, and others dissolving back into the desert. Abandoned dreams eventually become points of interests for those of us that stumble upon them decades later. Terlingua Ranch is a bizarre mix of old and new, good and bad, growth and decline, all completely unregulated. Modern homes with high values and stunning designs stand beside dilapidated do-it-yourself mistakes and abandoned ruins of the 1800’s and early 1900’s. brbrThe landscape is even more varied than the people and the structures. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, wild arroyos, dry and wet creeks, peaceful valleys, breathtaking badlands, moonscape like mud flats, the remains of ancient volcanoes, and fossilized ancient seabeds. All of it nurturing a vast array of plant life and wildlife. Around every corner and over every hill lies new and unexpected surprises. brbrThe Ranch is now home to a few hundred hardy souls. It is also dotted with a diverse array of vacation rental lodging options and campsites. Like the diverse land, they range in quality, style, value, and price. A few are amazing dream destinations. Some are good places to sleep. Others are the stuff of nightmares. (We don’t manage any in the nightmare category.)brbrBig Bend Vacation Rentals started out in 2007 and initially managed three of the first four vacation rentals in the Terlingua and Terlingua Ranch area. We now manage dozens out of a couple of hundred options. We represent dozens of property owners and have hosted tens of thousands of guests. You can trust us as managers, and you can rely on the properties that we manage. We have become very selective about the properties and the property owners that we add to our portfolio. Visit our website at www.BigBendVacations.com.brbrInteraction with Guests:brWe manage several properties and live few miles away. We are available by phone, text, email, or messages through Airbnb. We are typically only on site for cleaning or maintenance issues.

The ultra-modern vacation rentals at Fossil Knob Ridge are contemporary homes built from recycled shipping containers. Yes, you read that right. These vacation rental homes are constructed from big metal boxes that were originally used for transporting cargo across the globe on trains and ocean freighters. Indeed, these homes offer the most neoteric lodging in the Terlingua area.brbrFossil Knob Ridge offers six separate units. Each rental is similarly styled but each is unique in size, layout, design, furnishings, amenities, views, and occupancy level. The rentals are named after some of the local cinnabar mines that were the basis of settlement of this region in the late 1800's and early 1900's. We ask that you conserve it, but not so much as to compromise your comfort.br brLocated just one-mile northwest of the world famous Terlingua Ghost Town and twenty miles northwest of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. Fossil Knob Ridge overlooks the Ghost Town and has breathtaking mountain views, including the Chisos Mountains and into Mexico.br brRelax inside or on the shaded patio. We provide the laundry detergent for your convenience.brbrbrbrThere is a charcoal BBQ grill next to your A-frame. We provide grilling utensils, lighter fluid, and a lighter. brbrbrbrWe have level-2 EV chargers on site to charge your Tesla (NACS) or non-Tesla (J1772) electric vehicles. There is an additional $30 fee to use the EV charger if needed (charged for each night of the booking).brbrbrbrWe have backup Generac generators for the full facility. Power outages are frequent in the area (sometimes 2-3 times per month) and we are one of the very few properties in the area with backup power. You don't want to be stuck in a vacation rental when the power goes out. Temperatures can be extreme at any time of the year in the Big Bend.brbrbrbrGuest Access:brbrYou will be given the door code to enter your unit. You have access to the entire A-frame, the outside patio, the fire pit, and the clubhouse. Please stay on the walkways and don't wander off the walkways or near other cabins to give everyone their privacy.brbrbrbrThe Neighborhood:brbrWell, we are in the desert. There is not much of a neighborhood as we have vast empty spaces around us, yet close to the park and restaurants. The Ghost Town is 3 mins away, Big Bend National Park is 5 mins away, and Lajitas is 15 mins away. There are very few properties nearby. The back side of our property has Cigar Mountain, there is only one vacation rental on it that is visible from the property. Other than that, you have unrestricted views of Big Bend National Park, the Chisos Mountains, Santa Elena Canyon, and other nearby mountains.brbrbrbrGetting Around:brbrA car is essential to get around. Some businesses in town offer jeep rentals for your off-roading adventuresbrbrbrbrOther Things to Note:brbrPlease specify the correct number of people when booking. Up to 4 people are included in the listing cost and will be comfortable in the space. If you want to bring a 5th person, please be aware that you will be very tight. There is a $35 charge for the 5th person per night. We will provide a floor mattress. If we discover you brought extra people (through staff reports or cameras), we will charge $70 per person per night. brbrbrbrPets are not allowed. If we do find out you brought a pet (which we almost always do when guests try to break the rules), there will be a $199 extra cleaning fee, and any damage by the pet will also be charged to your card. brbrbrbrAlso, please review the pictures carefully. We have 12 cabins. All the A-frames have similar interiors and comparable views outside. We use the pictures interchangeably between the A-frames. Most of the exterior pictures are labeled showing the A-Frame they were taken at, and we also have a picture showing the aerial view of the property, showing the location and proximity of each cabin relative to others.brbrbrbrInteraction with Guests:brbrPlease send a message in the app. We will respond promptly. If you don't get a response in 30 mins, feel free to call us
