We attended Baylor University, then had careers in the insurance industry. Dan retired 10 years ago, and I retired in 2015. We love having full time to be able to devote to Scurlock Farms! brbr brbrI am the oldest of 5 and Dan and I have lived on the farm since 1971. None of my siblings had an interest in living here, so after my Dad died in 1986, Dan and I began acquiring the farm from my Mom. brbr brbrWe have raised our family here, and our grandchildren have been raised on the farm. We absolutely love it and feel blessed to have had the opportunity to enjoy this piece of earth. We always look forward and enjoy sharing it with our guests. brbr brbrA favorite of guests has been the free tours about the farm. visit the animals, river and hiking areas so guests know the lay of the land, and they are then free to visit these areas at their leisure. brbr brbrWhen my parents searched for the perfect land for their dream home they had three requirements: water, rocks and live oak trees. This piece of property fit the bill perfectly. brbr brbrIt is really special as the terrain is so varied. The top pastures are prairie, the steep wooded bluff divides the property down the middle, then the bottom pastures are wooded, and the river bottom forms the 1+ mile northern border of the farm with the beautiful San Gabriel River and its wide, white limestone banks. A spring-fed creek also runs across the property before emptying into the San Gabriel River. brbr brbrAny of the homes provide great bird watching lodging. We have had avid birders from many states and countries and all have seen a lifer while visiting the farm. Did you know that 2/3 of all birds found in the state of Texas are found in Williamson County ! brbr brbrWildlife abounds and with the different terrains, the farm is a bird watchers and hikers paradise! We recently got a video of a fox crossing near the goat pens at night and just last week saw him twice near David's home, coyotes (Casey and David saw a pair's eyes in his flashlight at our house last week), and a great horned owl. brbr brbrI grew up on a farm in Rockdale TX and could not wait to get away from the farm when I graduated. Dan was raised in town, also in Rockdale. brbr brbrWhen my parents offered all their children a home spot on the farm, Dan and I were the only ones that took them up on it. By then, I couldn't wait to get out of the city and back to the country! brbr brbrAfter my dad died in 1986, Dan and I acquired all but the 6 acres around The Palette Pad and Rocky Overlook. When my mom died in 2010 she left the two homes and 6 acres around them to me and Dan, knowing we would not sell them. brbr brbrBoth homes have been lovingly restored and we have totally enjoyed sharing them and their history with our guests. brbr brbrDavid, our youngest son, is our chief engineer, and he and Dan enjoy doing farm things together. The past few years have really been interesting. brbr brbrIn April, 2009 a tornado literally blew away our 'new' 72' barn. Dan and David spent the next year building two barns - this time red barns for me, which I had always wanted. brbr brbrSeptember, 2010 we had a major 500 year flood that wiped out 1/2 mile of fence along the river and washed up mountains of debris against trees in the bottom. We have bulldozed, planted grass and Dan and David replaced 1/2 mile of pipe fence. brbr brbrJill is a Meremah, an Italian sheepdog. She will greet you if you walk by - she loves people, children and other dogs. brbr brbrIn 2013 we were fortunate enough to purchase the adjoining 60 acre farm and 3 bedroom home at the end of our drive and we named that part of the farm Indian Bluff. Our oldest son, Daniel, sold his IT business in Dallas and bought it - he, too, couldn't wait to move back to the farm! brbr brbrThat home in on the highest bluff along the San Gabriel River for miles and offers spectacular views up and down the San Gabriel River. The Tonkawa Indians camped and hunted all along the entire farm. Guest have loved finding arrowheads! brbr brbrThe Palette Pad is located on Scurlock Farms, a 172 acre working farm. We raise cattle, goats, and have one horse. All of the critters love to be fed and the horse loves to be brushed. There is also a 20 acre pecan orchard and pecan harvest is in November. brbr brbrThe farm is in the Texas hill country and has very varied terrain - from the flat prairie hay pastures on top, to the heavily wooded bluffs that run down the middle of the farm, to the river bottom and pecan orchard. The San Gabriel River forms the north one mile border of the farm. The fishing is good and in the spring and summer the tubing is great (when we are not in drought conditions). There are many fossils in the wide white limestone riverbanks. Children LOVE throwing rocks in the river and never want to leave when we are on the tours. brbr brbrScurlock Farms is just a 10 minute drive to Georgetown and Southwestern University, 15 minutes top Dell Diamond and Kalahari Water Park, 30 minutes to Austin, and 75 minutes to Waco and Magnolia. We are in a perfect spot to use the farm for a base camp to return to after taking day trips around central Texas. brbr brbrThere are many golf courses within 15 - 30 minutes of the farm. Many guests have enjoyed spending a day visiting all of the charming shops around the Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas, and trying out some of the fantastic restaurants that we are lucky to have in Georgetown. There are many plays and musicals to be enjoyed at the Palace Theater in Georgetown. Dell Diamond and Kalahari Water Park are a 15 minute drive. Austin has many fun things to do and is only a 30 minute drive from the farm.
