The Burrow on Tucker Lake - Hike In Cabin on the Gunflint Trail

Grand Marais, Minnesota, United States

A five-minute hike through the forest leads you to the front door of The Burrow, our cozy off-grid guest cabin on a hill overlooking Tucker Lake. A unique experience on the Gunflint Trail, our hideaway provides an opportunity for solitude at the edge of the wilderness without giving up the comforts of home. A short walk down a hill to the lake gives you direct BWCA access from our private dock and opportunities for adventure and relaxation with provided snow shoes, paddle boards and a canoe.brbrSpecificsbrThe Burrow is hike-in and off-grid. You should be prepared to carry everything you take in and out on your back. In winter you can walk the packed trail to the cabin without issue. Snowshoes (free with your stay) or backcountry skis are recommended to traverse the snow on the lake and beyond. brbrAfter parking at the trailhead near our home, guests take the .2-mile path as it gently meanders through woods of spruce, aspen and white pine before arriving at The Burrow. The lake is another 200 feet through the forest.brbrThe Burrow is powered by the sun and heated with propane and wood, but still offers many modern amenities including internet. Visiting in the summer is carefree and requires little to no monitoring of the cabin's off-grid systems. A visit in the winter however will require you to monitor battery power levels and burn wood to keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature in addition to a vented, propane heater. brbrAT&T customers will have 2 bars of 5G service at the cabin, but the lodging also comes with a 5G capable iPad that can be used to watch movies, send messages, and create a personal hotspot to connect your devices. brbrThe cabin's kitchen includes a two-burner stove top, a spacious mini fridge, basic kitchen utensils and everything you need to make a good cup of coffee. brNOTE: Potable water is not provided to guests. The Burrow has a sink that is operated with a foot pump that provides unheated, NON POTABLE water for doing dishes and washing up. Drinking water must be hiked in (or filtered by guests as you would in the BWCA). brbrThe cabin's indoor bathroom uses an incinerating toilet, which might take a little getting used to but provides a superior experience to an outhouse. The bathroom also includes a wash basin that can be filled with water and a mirror. brbrWhen the seasons allow, guests can use an outdoor shower filled with water heated on the stove. In winter there is currently NO SHOWER option at the burrow. You can shower at the YMCA or Municipal Campground in Grand Marais.

John Howe, the architect of Seagull House, was Mr. Wright's chief draftsman at Taliesin for more than 25 years and designed and built this home, which is now available to rent as part of your North Shore experience.brbrThis 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom home is located a short drive up the shore of Lake Superior from the quaint lakeside town of Grand Marais. The unique angled rooms, low-pitched roof, and open interior spaces in this home are staples of the Frank Lloyd Wright prairie-style architecture that John Howe helped make famous back in the 1940s and 50s. Each room is carefully constructed and designed so that nothing is there by accident. Every piece of furniture, artwork, and even the knickknacks have been selected to match the design elements intended for this space. Because of this, many pieces in this home hold great value and it is why we do not recommend this property for families with young children.brbrThe unique architecture isn't all this home has to offer! Nestled on a beautiful plot of land against the shores of Lake Superior, you will get to enjoy a private ledge rock shoreline with easy to moderate access so you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the Big Lake. There is a gas and charcoal grill so cooking a meal outside in the warm summer months won't be an issue no matter what your grilling preference is. On cold winter nights, you can curl up in front of the wood-burning fireplace and enjoy a book on John Howe and Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture while sitting in one of their homes! Large windows take advantage of the Lake Superior views and the well-equipped kitchen allows you to make a delicious home-cooked meal. You'll feel right at home at Seagull House.

The Lighthouse. unique lodging overlooking the harbor. Sauna special!

Grand Marais, Minnesota, United States

The 'Lighthouse' is a special lodging overlooking the town and harbor of Grand Marais from its center. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. You can sit up in bed and view the harbor and the big lake beyond. If you would like to access the sauna please contact the owners in advance or book it yourself on our website and set up a reservation- it is an add on expense and is first come first serve. You can see the nightly amount in the rental agreement before you book and you pay for it on our direct site. November and April have sauna specials. At the Lighthouse there is covered parking that leads to a stairway that takes you up to the Lighthouse. The view of the old harbor from the balcony is stunning. There is a wrought iron table and chairs on the balcony for relaxing. Inside the Lighthouse you will find a queen bed, tile shower and bathroom, galley kitchen, custom dining table for two, LCD TV (please bring your own streaming codes, there is no cable or area broadcast content). The bed is set at an angle and faces southeast to capture the views of the harbor in the morning through large windows. Many of our guests yearn for a connection with nature, the lake, the community, a reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. There are transom windows around the perimeter of the apartment that let in light from all points on the compass but do not compromise privacy. Eye masks are provided for those that want to sleep in :-). Notice how the light changes as the day progresses. Observe the color differences around sunset or early in the morning as the Great Lake passes through its moods. The ceiling is very high and is vaulted and timberframed with unique 'Dragon Beams' from local timberframe artisans. Topping the lighthouse is an octagonal lighthouse cupola that lets light in all day and moonlight at night and contains a genuine ships lantern that you can switch on from the bed. And on top of the cuppola is a custom copper ball, in keeping with the lighthouses of the North Shore. The antique ship's light that occupies the cuppola can guide you as you walk home after a night of festivities in the town. There is an all cedar Finnish Sauna next door to the Lighthouse for your exclusive use for an additional fee. Usage comes with robes and additional towels and complete instructions. Simply state you would like to add the Sauna to the notes of your stay when you make your reservation and we will contact you with details and availability. If sauna availability is important to make your decision to stay with us then please message us before you make your reservation so we can see if it is available during your stay. Watch the fog roll in and out from your bed while you drink your morning coffee, and listen to the strains of local live music as the town celebrates the short summers at night. The gally kitchen is small but thoroughly modern with all the necessities. The Lighthouse is above the 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin', a restored historic log home. The Lighthouse is known for its inspiring charm. There have been plays and musicals written here, a fair number of proposals, and a good number of honeymoons. Come share the fantastic energy that is The Lighthouse. brbrLastly, we are implementing an incentive for you to choose trip insurance. We have discounted our rates on our direct website here by an additional 7% (the total savings between our direct site and say... AirBnB is now 14-21% only if you book on this direct site). We are doing this so that you may select trip insurance during your booking process. It will be offered to you while you are completing your booking and they charge 7%. We do not make any money on that. The cancellation policy we have had for 10 years is as follows: brbrYou may cancel within 48 hours of your booking for any reason. After that you can cancel with a 10% penalty up until 60 days prior to your arrival. After that you may cancel but your deposit can not be refunded. brbrIf you have trip insurance you can be reimbursed according to which policy you chose. And we are subsidizing it for you by having reduced our rental rates well below any other rates where our properties can be found. It's up to you, pocket the savings and run the risk of cancellation, or still get some savings and have the peace of mind of having some of your investment in your vacation protected in case of unforeseen events. brbrNo broadcast or cable Chanels. Smart TV only. Bring your codes for subscriptions. The sauna is available for an additional fee. Please contact the host to verify availability of the sauna for booking during the time of your stay.

The Aurora- Award Winning- Sauna available

Grand Marais, Minnesota, United States

The Aurora is a free standing home in the heart of Grand Marais near the harbor. Designed by celebrated Minnesota architect David Salmela and newly constructed in 2018/19. This collection of modern homes has been featured in Mn. Monthly, Midwest Home, Arch Daily, and other publications around the globe. We have even won awards for this architecture as far away as Sweden. The Aurora is the smaller sister to The Sky House and the Horizon, two sibling properties to Aurora in the exclusive enclave called tre søstra which means three sisters in Danish. Aurora is one bedroom, one bath, plus a very nice sleeper sofa for one adult or two children, and floor bed for one. There is a roomy main living space that seems to float above the area buildings and has wonderful view of the harbor, the town, and Lake Superior. Although designed ideally as an upscale oasis for two, 4 people can stay here in a pinch. The Aurora provides an inspiring modern space that allows for privacy among those sharing the lodging, and also provides a captivating view from the great room area on the top floor of the Grand Marais harbor, the neighborhood, and the town close by. She has a desk area in the bedroom, a walk out blue stone patio from the bedroom, a planning desk in the hall, an all tile bathroom with walk in shower, a large entry area, a full laundry, a beautiful flight of stairs to the upper level, a balcony, panoramic windows, fully modern kitchen with top of the line appliances, lighted drawers and butcher block countertops; dining for 4 with 6 possible, a custom sofa that sleeps one adult, or two children, a custom floor bed for one, and a gas fireplace. Everything is in walking distance from our little micro community in the heart of Grand Marais. Every restaurant, bar, coffee shop, gallery and Grand Marais' famous beach are all within a very short stroll from your private residence. The home is designed in modern Nordic fashion based on the original Stabur design- a work building commonly seen in Northern Europe. This design culminates a timeline of Scandinavian and Nordic design that the Miller's began on the property next door that also honored northern work buildings in the roots of their designs. There is off street parking under a car port. There is an electric car charging station in the carport as well. There is a fully modern and capable kitchen, an architect designed built in sofa and contemporary gas fireplace. Note the unique skylight with modern light treatments and the push button electronic pop up television that you can leave hidden if you wish. There is also a balcony. The entire home has slate floors and modern cabinets. There is a utility room with full size washer and dryer. Everything about The Aurora is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. These homes have an incredibly small footprint both structurally and environmentally. The foundations were designed to take up as little of the yard as possible- by being small at the start and increasing as you go up just like the old Stabur upon which this design is based. The energy efficiency is profound because these are composed of structurally insulated panels which are incredibly efficient. No cost has been spared to make the Aurora the highest quality, most significant architectural addition to Grand Marais' beautiful landscape. We hope you will find it warm, welcoming, and a once in a lifetime experience in one of the world's most magical places. We have written a detailed guide to what we consider the most special secret places in the area. You can pick and chose your own adventures with it for reference depending on your tastes and the weather. That guide is available to you inside the home and also sent out via links to videos. Sauna is available on a first come first served basis for an extra fee and is Thanks so much for staying with us!
