By design, the Sky House provides for all the needs of a vacationing party of up to 6 people in a 1264 Sq. Ft. home but 4 people are ideal. We are a dog friendly stay with the payment of the appropriate fee and understanding of the rules. The Sky House provides an inspiring, modern space that allows for privacy among those sharing the lodging, and also provides a breathtaking great room area on the top floor with fantastic views of the Grand Marais harbor, the neighborhood, and the town. Everything is in short walking distance from our micro community right in the heart of Grand Marais. Every restaurant, bar, coffee shop, gallery, and Grand Marais' famous beach are all a very short stroll from this private residence. Up to 4 guests are included in the base price and additional guests up to 6 maximum are allowed with additional per night guest fees. The home is designed in modern Nordic fashion. The design is contextual architecture that completes a timeline of Scandinavian and Nordic design that the owners began on the property next door that also honored northern buildings in the roots of their designs. There is off street parking under a sod roofed carport. There is also an electric car charging station in the car port. Walk up to the entry area and pass under the arch to the first of 3 decks where there is room to store bikes in summer, and once inside, there is plenty of room to shake off the snow, hang the coats and set down the skis or snowshoes. Each bedroom is very private is separated from the other by a soundproofed floor and ceiling for maximum privacy. Each bedroom also has its own restroom with shower, work station, free standing closet, queen bed, and balcony or patio with great views for getting away from the group. Continuing up the inspiring staircase leads you to the primary gathering area on the top floor. This area is breathtaking with its expansive windows, view of the town and harbor, Lake Superior and the grounds. It is simply the best view from a lodging in Grand Marais. There is a fully modern and capable kitchen, an architect designed built in sofa for single sleepers, and a contemporary gas fireplace. The sofa can sleep one adult or two children as is, or it can be modified to sleep one adult above and one adult on floor cushions. Note the unique skylight with natural light filtering treatments and the push button electronic pop up television that you can leave hidden if you wish. There is also a wrap around deck on this top level with fantastic view of the rooftops and harbor and the town and of course Lake Superior. There is a utility room with full size washer and dryer. Everything about the Sky House is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. These homes have an incredibly small footprint both structurally and environmentally. The foundations were designed to take up as little of the yard as possible- by being small at the start and increasing as you go up just like the old Stabur upon which this design is based. No cost has been spared to make the Sky House the highest quality, most significant architectural addition to Grand Marais' beautiful landscape. Families and small groups are always welcome to stay with us as a home base for their nearby sights exploration. We offer Mindful Paddling & Hiking Guide Services to our guests. brbr brbrWhat does off-grid look like at our property brbrThe Guest Suite is located within our off-grid homestead, in Minnesota’s remote north woods, 35 minutes northeast of Grand Marais. We are located 7 miles from the conventional grid. Our energy comes from 16 solar panels mounted on the roof of our homestead. We have 24 batteries in which this solar energy is stored. On cloudy days, we have a propane generator that produces the energy used and stored. Propane, having a by-product of water, lessens our carbon footprint. We ask that our guests help us conserve our energy wherever possible. UPDATE: Power was brought up to the property through a federal grant. We’re thankful to be able to continue to use our solar energy system, however. brbr brbrThere are no phone lines in our area but if you have AT&T, T-Mobile or Consumer, you will enjoy the ability to make phone calls freely as we do. You may also get a tiny bit of data. Our phone is available for emergencies if you do not have coverage. brbr brbrSerenity with Connectivity! We now have Wifi! brbr brbrOur delicious drinking water comes from our own well. brbr brbrOur heat is in floor and is fed by an outdoor wood boiler. brbr brbrWe have indoor plumbing! brbr brbrWe ask that our guests help to conserve our precious resources by limiting the length and number of showers whenever possible.
