Located in Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our fully permitted house your home away from home during your next visit. brbrHale Hubner Treehouse Cottage is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the peaceful Volcano lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer. brbrOur house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house. A spacious lanai greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings. br brA master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a queen-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.brbrVolcano is situated at 4000 ft elevation in ʻōhi'a and hapu'u rain forest. This means that the climate is not quite what most people expect when they think of Hawai'i. It is cooler in Volcano (upper 70's in daytime to 50's in evenings and even cooler during winter months), so bring some cooler weather clothes so that you don't miss out seeing the volcano at night. Also, bring a jacket or rain poncho so that you do not miss out on outdoor activities because of rain or random shower. We have electric heaters and heated mattress pads in the home, but Treehouse Cottage is best-heated by our large wood burning stove. If your stay will fall during December through February, and you are not sure about operating a wood stove or sensitive to cold climate, please reach out to me before booking or consider looking at our Fern Cottage, which is also in Volcano and has a gas stove for heating and is more insulated. We provide starters, kindling and wood to help you on the first night, especially if you are arriving later in the evening. There are stores in Volcano Village and in the National Park that have firewood and additional starters for sale. If you have any questions, please donʻt hesitate to reach out. If you have been to other areas of Hawai`i, you will know that some areas are very warm. Volcano has quite a different climate and it is cool here with the crisp air of mountain elevation. Anticipate rain, sun on most afternoons and cooler evening temperatures. It is very uncommon for properties in the area to have air conditioning. With ample doors and windows the air circulates beautifully.brbrVolcano Village is one of the last areas of native rainforest in all of Hawai`i. It is an incredibly special place that we invite you to enjoy and appreciate. Being remotely located, please be prepared that there may be times of slow traffic on our two lane highway. Sometimes limbs fall on our power lines interrupting power service. We keep flashlights, extra batteries, and candles at the unit for these instances. It is not uncommon for local restaurants to be closed, so it is a good practice to check before venturing out. There are two convenience stores and gas stations located in Volcano Village. They both close early, usually at 7pm.brbrPlease be aware that Coqui frogs are Volcano residents. They make a chirping sound that is a bit like loud crickets. For light sleepers this may be a bit disruptive; there is a white noise machine in the nightstand, if needed. Volcano Village is a small, forest town on a volcano on an outlying island in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Expect the unexpected and you will have a wonderful adventure in a magical place.brbrFor drinking water, we have triple filtration and UV sanitation for our eco-friendly rainwater catchment system. Our tap water is safe to drink.brbrBeing near the Volcano we are often asked about the activity and any safety concerns. The residential area near the park is considered a low risk lava zone. In the past 100,000 years there has not been a flow recorded in the area of Volcano Village. The active eruption area from the 2018 eruption was in the East Rift Zone, about a 1 hour drive from Volcano Village, near the coast in the Pahoa area. The Mauna Loa eruption of 2022 has concluded with no risk to any inhabited areas. Kilauea erupted in December 2024 and January 2025, and the lava remained within Kilauea caldera.brbrHawai’i County has recently adopted local ordinances to help keep our neighborhoods pleasant for everyone. This high elevation area, with a cool mountain climate, was historically a vacation retreat for the well-to-do of the Big Island of Hawaii, where they escaped the heat of the lowlands. Lovely home with hot tub near Volcano National Park

Hale Ma‘ukele is a large, well decorated home located near the heart of Volcano Village and 1 mile from Volcano National Park. It has 2.5 baths, 3 bedrooms, 4 beds, a large living area, and a 4 person hot tub. We have a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, hot tub, a nice back yard, and a back deck with a gas grill. The house is set in the native forest with giant Hapu‘u ferns, ‘o‘hia trees, and native birds all around. brbrMy wife and I moved here in 2006 with our kids, designed and built this house with other family. For the nest year we worked on the landscaping, and decorated it with local art and photography. The house has its own solar energy and filtered, drinkable catchment water.brbrThe house has a open floor plan downstairs and lots of windows to look out on the rainforest. It is a good layout for large groups or families as it facilitates connection, but also has private feeling bedrooms upstairs that have some separation from each other. The master bedroom has its own bathroom, and there is another full bathroom upstairs for the other two bedrooms. We have a laundry room with a washer and dryer, a smart TV with high speed wifi.brbrThe back deck gets sun and is a great place to drink coffee, eat, relax and grill. The hot tub is set in a private corner of the property in the rainforest and is a great place to unwind after a day of activity at Volcanoes National Park or somewhere else.brbrWe are a 5 minute drive to Volcanoes National Park and a 2 minute drive to Volcano Village. Volcano is a cute little town with a few restaurants, general stores, a community center, playground, and a nice farmers market on Sundays.brbrVolcano is at 3500 feet in a high elevation tropical rainforest, so it is never too hot. It can be chilly and damp depending on the weather, so it is nice to have the mini split heater.
