The highly recommended Island Lilly's Deli is right aross the street from the park. There is also a library and a small but fascinating museum. Just south of Pine Island Center is a Winn-Dixie and a CVS. There is a cluster of amazing restaurants, many of which feature live music, at each end of the island and in Matlacha (the artsy-touristy hamlet you pass through on your way to Pine Island. Though it has no beaches, there are several public marinas on the island, and a bike trail that stretches from one tip of the island to the other. You can rent bikes on Pine Island Road just east of the Center, and kayaks at any marina. The Randall Research Center is around the corner. For birders, there are the Myakka and Crew Nature Preserves, the Rookery, and, of course, the Everglades (about a two hour drive). Check out the Alden Pines Country Club for golf, right on the island. And of course, enjoy the dozens of restaurants and cafes in Bokeelia, St. James City, and Matlacha.brbrGetting aroundbrThere is no public transport on Pine Island, so you'll need a car. The cottage is about 45 minutes from RSW, which is the Fort Myers International Airport, and about twenty minutes from the Charlotte County Airport in Punta Gorda.brbrOther things to notebrSeagrape Escape is an older home, and it is most definitely not a motel. We are not hoteliers. This is my winter home, and it has both the charms and the annoyances of a home. You make your own bed and sweep/vacuum the floor yourself. There is often live music and sand volleyball. Young children can play barefoot in the shallow water that very gradually gets deeper. The sand is so perfect for sand castles that there is an annual professional sand sculpting competition. The beaches on Sanibel are also about 35 miles from Pine Island. Wear water shoes because the Sanibel beaches have abundant sea shells. Cayo Costa is a state park with no roads or electricity but there are restrooms and a small shop that has ice cream bars. You can only get there by boat. A water taxi boards in Bokeelia, near our house. Cayo Costa beaches are powdery and pristine; you can find your own isolated spot. brbrThere are NO BEACHES on Pine Island because it is surrounded by protected mangrove trees but it is where the fish feed. Some of the best tarpon fishing in the world is off of Pine Island. brbrYou will want to rent a kayak. There are estuaries that are easy to paddle to in the calm, chest-deep water. Bring binoculars and a camera and find a little clearing of sand for a picnic while you listen to and.see abundant bird life, dolphins, manatees and boats. You can park your boat in our driveway and launch at the local marina.brbrPine Island is a put-in site on the Great Calusa Blueway. The 190 mile paddling trail meanders through coastal waters via easy-to-identify brown-and-white signs through shallow areas away from powerboat traffic. brbrPine Island is close to eco tours and nature trails. There are 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, a fully stocked kitchen with all new Fridgidaire appliances, living room, dining room, and screened in deck overlooking the canal and fruit trees.brThe main bedroom has a king size bed with storage as well as a large dresser and huge closet. The 2nd bedroom has 2 twin beds, dresser and big closet. The living room has a queen sleeper sofa. We supply all the comforts of home for short or extended stays. We have added a newer air conditioner, hardwood floors and new roof in 2022.brPlenty of seating options for the whole family. brDownstairs there is a laundry room for guest use with a washer, dryer, folding table and a freezer to store your ice, bait and the day's catch.
