Spent a lovely Christmas at Gilmore House. The cottage is cosy with some beautiiful original features and in an absolutely brilliant central location for both Alston's amenities and country walks. We were delighted to arrive and find that it had been (tastefully!) decorated for the festive season. The listing doesn't make clear enough the accessibility challenges that the cottage might pose for anyone who is less than sprightly and sure-footed. My elderly parents joined us for part of the stay, and the very narrow and steep stairs were a constant battle. Also, initial access is via the back door over very uneven cobbles - we banned them from attempting that route into the cottage! But overall, if it were just the two of us (plus dog!), we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, although a shared garden this was not an issue as the residents who shared the garden were very nice and friendly.

Lovely little cottage, nicely laid out and complete with the most gorgeous range fire in the front room. I've driven through Alston plenty of times but have never stopped and was pleasantly surprised. Best food in the village was found at Lowerbyer Manor, closely followed by the Indian Restaurant situated within the Victoria Inn. Only criticisms of Gilmore House are, I felt that privacy glass should be fitted to the bathroom windows and for a cottage that allows dogs to stay a stronger vacuum cleaner should be provided, in reality there's nothing really wrong at all. Would definitely recommend and may even book it again in a few years or so.
