The Munches Room is carefully appointed in the Adam style, and connects guests to the Jacobite history of Buittle, former home of the Maxwells. The room is on the ground floor, with access to the courtyard (with one step) and its own ensuite bathroom with shower. Full Scottish or American breakfast is included. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available. Please let us know of any dietary requirements ahead of time. We aim to offer guests a true country house experience.

As part of our effort to reduce our environmental impact, gourmet tea and coffee are provided by the house manager upon request.

The site which the present tower occupies was once the inner bailey of the medieval Buittle Castle, one of Scotland's royal castles and twice capital of Scotland. Buittle was home to Lady Devorguilla of Galloway and the Bailliol Dynasty, and later a Jacobite stronghold of the Gordon and Maxwell families, who re-constructed the original 13th Century keep into the present L-plan tower, c.1500. Buittle Castle, unlike many such buildings, remains very much a working building, and so retains the 'feel' that these buildings had when first built, surrounded by formal gardens, livestock, vegetable growing and pleasure grounds. It is currently home to James, the 24th great grandson of Lady Devorguilla, and his cousin Tobias, who have re-acquired the castle after roughly 60 years of it being out of family ownership. The site is also home to a working printing office specialising in craft letterpress printing and bookbinding, and a medieval chapel, with an interesting Jacobite history, in which services are regularly celebrated in the pre-reformation Use of Sarum.

Due to COVID-19, the Hot Tub is temporarily closed.

Buittle castle is an old but beautiful castle. The rooms are decorated exquisitely the attention to detail is lovely. Tobias is an excellent host so polite and charming. We had dinner in the great hall although the room was a little chilly it was September the food was wonderful. Would stay again if in the area.

We have just returned from a fantastic stay in The Munches bedroom at Buittle Castle. Tobias our host, was just fabulous and cooked delicious breakfast which we took in the main hall. The history of the place is just so intriguing and interesting and Tobias’s knowledge is just remarkable. We choose to have an evening meal here and had the opportunity to eat inside the castle… what a wonderful experience, creating enchanting memories of a time lived here. Alongside, delicious food and wonderful conversation with our host, Tobias. (A definite must do). This place is totally unique, you really feel a part of history especially knowing it’s importance and that Mary Queen of Scots stayed here. The restoration project is a 20-30year project so don’t expect everything to be guilded and finished. it’s unique, quirky, interesting and very, very special place that hopefully we will return too. What a fabulous holiday we have had - thank you

We had a lovely time and wished we could stay longer. The room is furnished elegantly and to a high standard, with lots of lovely touches and absolutely nothing cheap or nasty. The host is charming. The breakfast was excellent. The setting is peaceful and beautiful. We had everything we needed and there was nothing to spoil the special atmosphere.

My parter and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this fabulous little castle. Our room’s decor was beautiful and the bed very comfy. Breakfast was served in the grand hall which was extra special, and the breakfast itself was delicious. The gardens are stunning and there are plenty of seating areas, plus a short circular walk around the gardens and along the river. The owner Tobias was there to greet us and told us all about the fascinating history of the castle. The area itself is lovely and we visited Castle Douglas, Kippford and Mabie Forest.

We really enjoyed staying in the unique rooms. It was quiet, the room was spacious, and the breakfast was delicious. The medieval building is secluded and has a special flair, both inside and out. The owner is approachable and helpful.

Buittle Castle is a fascinating and beautiful place to stay. The owners James and Tobias are charming and full of information about the history of the place and it's restoration. The room we stayed in is decorated in medieval style but with all mod-cons so very comfortable. The gardens and grounds can be used by guests and we were lucky enough to have a warm spring evening to enjoy a glass of wine in the sunken garden! The peacock is spectacular! We had breakfast and dinner both of which were delicious. The Castle is very conveniently located for visiting Dalbeattie, local woodlands and the Solway coast. My only tiny criticism would be that the Great Hall where we ate was a little gloomy and chilly though the medieval decor almost made up for that!

Stayed for 3 nights but could have easily have stayed longer. Fab & unusual place to stay with great/attentive host, limited (but good) breakfast and hot tub. Would not hesitate to stay again.

My husband and I regularly stay at this excellent property and appreciate being recognised and welcomed as returning visitors. The staff go well above what is necessary to provide for their guests and have never failed to fulfil any particular request we have made. The cooked Scottish breakfast is superb and the newly-available Viennese breakfast a fine addition to the choices. I also highly recommend the private dining experience in one of the castle's interesting historic rooms. The decanter of sherry in the room is a nice touch.

We had a very comfortable two night stay at the Castle and enjoyed our time. Tobias made the visit special. He took the time to answer questions and provide recommendations about local activities. He answered all my questions about the gardens and genuinely helped me with my own project. He is the kindest person I have met in a very long time, and generous with his time and care. I will absolutely be staying again.

Stayed a night for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast and everything was so special! Decor of the room was exquisite and we had a lovely, atmospheric, romantic meal in the tower dining room! We felt so privileged Tobias let us dine in his home, he made the experience so personal from start to finish. The bed was extremely comfortable and the shower was lovely - hot and powerful! Gorgeous location, we did several good hikes around the area. All in all, a beautiful experience for a couple wanting to have a romantic night away in a unique setting.

We booked the munchies room initially due to it being all on the ground floor. My wife is disabled and this is something that we always look for. We were delighted that we came across Buittle Castle and would definitely stay there again. In the early evening we heard a strange sound from the courtyard. It turned out to be a beautiful Peacock walking past our door. That's not something you see every day The bed was extremely comfortable. The full cooked breakfast was fantastic. Our waitress brought breakfast to our room so my wife didn't need to worry about walking any distance. We can't fault the place. Beautiful surroundings, spotlessly clean, pleasant and welcoming host. No hesitation in recommending to others.

The stay here was everything we expected. The only issue was the weather but not much that could be done about that. The dinner was lovely and good value for money.
