Stunningly Private Piha Retreat

Piha, Waitakere Auckland, New Zealand

The Miller Family purchased a 7 acre native bush block in 1924. It is now registered with the Queen Elizabeth Trust and has an open space covenant on it i.e. protected native forest. There is a labyrinth of bush tracks and an old dam on the property. The property is 7 kms from Piha Beach with beautiful bush and sea views over the Tasman Sea and Lion Rock.brbrThere is also another original bach on the property which is advertised under unique bush property Yes, you can even book out the 2 properties if you require larger separate accommodation. The houses are all private from each other.brbrThis fabulous new Retreat was designed by Chris Tate who won international acclaim for his Glasshouse in Titirangi.brbrThe decor is beautiful, you will watch the sun go down from the deck at night; and have an amazing peaceful sleep on the NZ made Cotton and Latex mattresses. The 2 queen-size beds are the only sleeping facilities - no fold-out or portable beds are provided.brbrIt has a special feel about it, with a quirky design feature of an outdoor kitchen sink. And our guests love the outdoor bath (with hot water). The open plan living room has an enclosed fireplace (for use of winter months), small tv with freeview & dvd player. There is a heatpump in the lounge and electric blankets on both beds. The lounge has a fireplace with firewood provided over winter months.brbrWhat else can we say ..... you will love itbrbrThe Retreat is self catering. There is a small Breville bench-top oven - called a smart oven, an electric frypan, small slow cooker, rice cooker, 2 solid elements, pots and pans + the Webber BBQ (out on the front deck).brbrWe provide:brFiltered drinking waterbrTea/coffee/sugarbrSalt/pepper/cooking oilbrFirewood (provided over winter months only)brbrAs we are part of the Waitakere Ranges we are on tank water so supply may be limited in summer months. The very occasional power outages in the area means that no water will available during any outage because of the electric pump - this doesn't happen often.brbrThis property is not suitable for pets.brbrA request from us - when you send your booking request please include some details about your group e.g. who they are and what they do - this is very special family land and we like to have a little information about our guests. brbrMy nephew Michael is our custodian and lives in another house on the property - he will usually be there when you arrive. brbrOur property is not suitable or available for events or parties so please do not be offended when requests such as these are declined. Thank you for your understanding.brbrSpecial conditions: brNo Smoking insidebrNo petsbr2 car maximumbrbrTransportbrWe strongly recommend you have a car for your stay. It is highly unlikely that an uber or taxi from the airport will agree to bring you to the Retreat. And you will need a car to be able to do some food shopping for your stay. Also a heads-up that campervans are not able to get up our driveway.

Comfortable North Piha family beach-house

Piha, Auckland, New Zealand

In a prime spot over the road from Piha's dramatic surf beach, at the quieter north end, our beach-house started life 30 years ago, with architect brief: 'simple kiwi bach'.brWe've improved and expanded it over the years, with our family, into a roomy, comfortable home-away-from-home, with large sunny decks and wonderful indoor/outdoor living, most mod-cons, yet still retaining some of the 'bachy' feel that we wanted.brWe love our special place and our guests seem to agree, many coming back year after year.brbrDon't expect 5-star luxury, but instead enjoy a comfortable, clean & functional home with just about everything you want and need, including our recently renovated kitchen, new heat pump, fibre internet and smart TV. brbrWe have a separate spacious sunny Studio (with en-suite bathroom) outside above the garage, ideal for a separate living/play area for older or younger family members. Or could be used, as I have done, as an office during lock-downs !brOur decks all around mean you can relax in the perfect sunny (or shady) spot, chill in the hammock, or spot tuis & kererus.brbrOur quiet North Piha location is worlds away from the south Piha summer crowds, sheltered by our pohutukawas from the west coast winds, spray and roar of the surf. We have some limited surf views downstairs, but prime spot is upstairs in the master bedroom, even from your pillow.brbrEnjoy the surf & beach straight across the road, year round bush walks, and hunkering down with wine, games and books around the fire in winter!brbrEasy access (2-3 mins walk) to North Piha Surf Club patrolled area for safe swimming.brWonderful bush and spectacular cliff-top walks are close by - either into the bush up the Marawhara stream, or winding up Whites Track to the top of the cliffs above the house, and back down past Whites Beach.brMeals available locally at the Aryeh Restaurant, (check times), and dinners some evenings either at the Piha RSA, Piha Surf Club (South Piha) or Piha Bowling Club.brbrSpecial conditions: brNO PARTIES, WEDDINGS or other social gatherings please. brbrExtras: Cleaning (Required)brbrNOTE (1): As per kiwi Book-a-Bach tradition, and to keep our cleaning charges to a minimum, we assume that you will be bringing your own linen (towels/sheets/tea towels).brIf that will be a problem for you, then let us know and we can provide linen for an additional charge.brbrNOTE (2): We have a remotely-accessible video camera monitoring the front deck, stairs and front of the main house, used for security purposes only

Classic Piha Bach - Seaview Road

Piha, Auckland, New Zealand

Step into the charm of old-school Piha with this 1930s bach perched above the surf on Seaview Road. Simple, peaceful, and full of character, this one-bedroom retreat offers ocean views and a truly relaxed West Coast vibe—ideal for solo travellers, couples, or small groups looking to unwind.brThis is the real deal—a no-frills, old-school Kiwi bach with separate living, kitchen, and bedroom space. The lounge is filled with natural light, perfect for curling up with a book, listening to the waves, or watching the weather roll in over the sea. The kitchen has all the basics for a comfortable stay, and the vintage bathroom adds to the home’s nostalgic charm.brbrThe bedroom includes a double bed and a set of bunks, making it great for up to four guests. There’s also a fold-out couch in the lounge for extra sleeping space. Not ideal for children under 10 due to the layout and access.brbrWhat You’ll Lovebr• Good views of the Tasman Sea and Lion Rock from the deckbr• Natural light-filled lounge, perfect for relaxingbr• Authentic 1930s character and laid-back vibebr• Short walk to Piha Beach, The Piha Store, RSA, West Coast Gallery and Murray’sbr• Peaceful, private setting surrounded by native bushbr• Sleeps up to 4 (ideal for up to 3 adults)br• Wi-Fi available, so you can stay connected if you choose to.brGuest accessbrGuests have exclusive use of the bach and surrounding property (excluding the garage).brbrThere is off-street parking in the gravel driveway for one car, but it is steep. If your vehicle sits low to the ground, it may be more practical to park on the roadside and walk up. The walk to the house includes a 90-year-old brick path that is uneven in places—please tread carefully, especially in wet weather. The path and incline are part of the authentic West Coast charm but may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns. This property is not wheelchair accessible.brOther things to notebrThis is our family bach, filled with memories and character. We have plans to restore it to its former glory, and your stay helps us bring that dream to life so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.br• The water is solar heated, so for a hot shower, it’s best to jump in before the sun goes downbr• Bottled water will be provided for drinkingbrbrLooking for something simple, soulful, and close to the sea This bach on Seaview Road is a throwback to classic Kiwi holidays—unfussy, unplugged, and unforgettable.

Magical river retreat with private swimming hole.

Piha, Auckland, New Zealand

Just 40 mins drive from Auckland, you can swim in your own private swimming hole or walk 10 minutes to the beach. Watch kererū, tui and fantails sitting in the trees on the deck and sit next to the brazier under the stars, listening to the river below. brThis is a really unique place and not for everyone. A sense of adventure and a love of vintage homewares with some modern comforts (like a dishwasher and indoor plumbing) is a must. This kind of experience is hard to come by so close to the city.brbrOur cute 1940’s inspired house will take you back in time. brThe main house is over a small walking bridge and up a small shell path ( 30 metres) or steps. ( not really suitable for wheely suitcasesbrNestled in the bush with a sunny deck above the river, you can spend your days on Piha beach or just swimming in your own private swimming hole right below the house. Explore the nearby waterfall or Maungaroa ridge track or go exploring up behind the house on our own bush tracks. brbrThe house itself is perfect for a family of up to 6 or two couples. Please specify the beds you would like made up.brFrom October to April we make the two sleep outs available on request, with room for at least two more couples or another family. ( note: there is no power in the sleep outs. We use solar lights and torches which we will provide. Please send a message with your booking if you would like access to one or both sleep outs as there will be an additional charge to cover preparation and linen.brThe house comprises a main living room and kitchen in one space with two main bedrooms off to the side, one with a queen bed and the other, with a double bed and separate single bunk bed. brThere is a third very small room with a single bed, separated by a curtain from the main space. brbrThe bathroom has a full sized shower, heated towel rail and walk through to the flush toilet and small basin. There is also a washing machine in this space. brOutside the bathroom door is a basin for hand washing and tooth brushing. brOn the deck is a bathtub with plumbed hot water. brbrIn the kitchen, there is a full sized fridge/freezer, oven and electric hob, a microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine and water filter. brbrOur house is old and was built as a summer house in the 1940’s. Everything has been recently painted and we take great care in cleaning and looking after our place as we spend as much time there as possible. If you are looking for perfection, you will not find it here. But it has uniqueness in spades! brbrIf you have mobility issues or small children it may not be suitable. Please message with any questions.brbrFlat screen TV with Netflix and Neon. brStereo with aux plug for phone. brThere is good phone reception and wifi. brbrThere is ample car parking is on the lower lawn where the two sleep-outs are located. Walk over the bridge across the river and up a short path to the main house.brbrSupplied:brTea, coffee and cooking basics brEco dish-washing liquid and bodywashbrFresh clean linen on all beds and bath and beach towels.brbrWhen you rent the house, the entire property will be accessible to you only, no matter how many guests.brHowever, the use of the sleep-outs are dependent on how many adult guests are booked. However, the use of the sleep-outs are dependent on how many adult guests are booked. We usually make the smaller one that is closer to the house, available if there are more than two couples staying. The larger one is usually available for 8 guests. Please specify how many couples (people sharing a bed) and how you would like the bedding configuration to work otherwise you may not have access to these spaces.brbrDuring the months of May, June and July the bush covered cliff above our house shades us completely from the winter sun ( which is why we are lucky enough to have glowworms) brWe recommend staying between August and April. (although it is warm and cosy in the winter with the fire roaring or the heat pump on.) Please enquire if you would like to stay over the winter, keeping in mind that the bush aspect of the house, means that it is wet and shady outside at this time of year. brbrOur property is unique and not suitable for children under 5 due to its proximity to the river. brbrIf you are arriving at night, make sure that you have some kind of torch or phone flashlight as you will need to negotiate the bridge and path to the house.

Piha, Auckland, New Zealand

Experience Piha like a local in this modern, easy-living, 3-bedroom house in a prime location across the road from Piha’s scenic black-sand surf beach, just 3 mins walk to beach, at the quiet north end of Piha. Fully renovated home with chill-out beach vibe, mod cons, ultra quiet appliances and open plan kitchen and living area flowing onto large sunny, wrap-around decks on two sides of the house. Walkway to beach is directly over the road. Close to North Piha Surf Lifeguard Club - patrolled swimming flags mostly opposite our house during summer for safe swimming.brbrInstantly relax and feel reinvigorated in nature’s elements - roaring surf, expansive beaches, hazy ocean mist, native bush-clad hills and vivid sunsets - while being nestled in the shelter of grand Pohutukawa trees with glimpses of the sea. brbrDiscover plentiful activities and spectacular scenery. Go beach, bush or visit the local village: surf, swim, run, frisbee, read, cook, scenic walks (coastal and native forest tracks), play games and movies or take in South Piha village (20 - 30 min walk) general store, cafe, restaurants, art gallery, library, campground, bowling, tennis, surf club and beach.brbrWith 2 king beds and 2 single/twin beds, this house offers WiFi, a washing machine/clothes dryer, AC, and heating. A modern kitchen that's well equipped with everything you need to cook delicious food and enjoy filtered drinking water. Bathrooms come equipped with a shower and hair dryer and a separate toilet. brbrFamily have been coming to Piha for five generations. We’ve had this house since the 1990’s. One of the first to be built in this area in the 1950’s, fully renovated in 2023/2024 retaining the easy-living beach vibe that fits in so well with the wonderful location and community. You're sure to make fantastic memories with a stay at our place! brbrOTHER THINGS TO NOTE: brSorry we DO NOT accept gatherings (parties), other guests to stay (unless by prior arrangement), pets or fireworks.brExtras: Cleaning fee $150 required.brBeach towels: bring your own beach towels so you can fully relax at the beach soaking up the warm sun, sand and surf.brWe provide:brBed linen and a bathroom towel for each guest per stay. Please don't take our bathroom towels to the beach as salt and iron sand sticks to fabric.brFiltered drinking waterbrUHT milk, tea (regular black tea and peppermint), coffee (instant and some whole beans to get you started using the coffee maker), sugarbrVegemite, marmite, salt, pepper, cooking oil, white vinegarbrTea towels, cleaning products, rubbish bag, laundry powder, some toilet paperbrHand wash, body wash, hand towels, shower mat brbrWater and septic tank: We have a septic tank so please place nothing unsuitable down drains or the toilet. There is both reticulated water (local artesian water for our community only that has a high mineral content) and our own fresh rainwater tanks for filtered drinking water. We request that you conserve water use eg. taking short showers, not leaving taps running, etc. Occasionally supply may be limited in peak summer months. The very occasional power outages in the area won’t affect water supply and this doesn't happen often.brbrOut-and-about and essentials: Piha Store has delicious artisan food and bread and stocks most essentials, but has no alcohol or fuel. Tasty local dining and take aways are available from the Piha RSA (Returned Services Association), Piha Bowling Club, South Piha Surf Club, Murray Piha and award-winning Aryeh (licensed). The nearest supermarkets and petrol stations are in Henderson (20 mins drive) so we suggest you purchase your provisions on the way. Parts of this region of Auckland are ‘dry’ which means many places do not sell alcohol. If this is important remember to get your provisions near to your home or shop near Auckland Airport where there are supermarkets and other shops. The drive from downtown Auckland and from Auckland airport takes approx. 1 hour in light traffic. brbrABOUT THE SPACEbrThe house has an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area surrounded by large wrap-around decks on two sides with several options for outdoor dining. On one level above two garages with wide step access from driveway to front door and decks.brbrBedrooms: 3 bedrooms attached to living area, two with comfortable king sized beds and one with 2 singles. Master bedroom has sliding door onto deck with glimpses of the sea. All have insect screens over opening windows, wardrobe space (draws, hangers hanging space), dual power points with USB charger and portable fans during summer. Option to bring your own bathroom towels or we can provide these by prior arrangement with your host. brbrLaundry: Washing machine and clothes drier for your use, portable drying rack, clothes pegs and outdoor clothes line. Some washing powder is provided. If you need more, either bring it with you or buy more at Piha Store.br brWi-Fi and entertainment: Wi-Fi is provided. For your entertainment there is a projector to watch your favourite movies on full-length roller blinds as the sun goes down (either project inside or enjoy outdoor movies viewing from the deck). UE Boom wireless speaker, playing cards and frisbee also provided.brbrLawn and wash-down area for sandy feet and beach gear: Find a spot on the lawn under the grand Pohutukawa tree to deeply relax. An outdoor shower and wash-down area for sandy feet and beach gear are conveniently located on the lawn beside the front steps. We’ve learnt this 'beach hack' is a must living so close to the beach. We recommend that you use the wash-off area and shake off beach towels to reduce the amount of sand making its way into the house. brbrBeach towels: Bring beach towels to enjoy the beach. We recommend wearing open shoes to the beach during summer as iron sand gets hot and can burn.br
