Fries, Virginia
This 1800 Sq. foot home is located in the historic mill town of Fries, VA. The beautiful New River flows by our small village on it's way up north. 'The New River Trail' follows the river from Fries to Pulaski for over fifty miles. It is a 'Rails to Trails' project for bikers, hikers and horses. There is very little incline or decent and you will find trestles, a tunnel, beautiful wild flowers, shoals and lots of cool shade in mostly secluded deep woodlands. The fishing is great along with canoeing, tubing and kayaking.
Blue Grass Music is plentiful with The Galax Fiddlers Convention and Fries Fiddlers Convention the second and third weeks in August.
The house is only 14 miles from the most visited National Park, 'The Blue Ridge Parkway' and the Blue Ridge Music Center.
For those of you with wonderlust there are lots of narrow dirt and paved roads with pastures, mountains, creeks and valleys to explore.

The views of the New River were amazing and i really appreciated the booklet prepared for me and my family by the owners of outdoor activities and events. Thank you for a great stay
I loved the decor inside the house, it was comfortable and welcoming. I wish I had known the downstairs bathroom only had a tub. That did not work well for my elderly mother.
The house was in a nice location on a quiet street. Walking distance to a beautiful park along the river. Very close to the New River Trail (though temporary closures forced us to access the trail in other locations). Check the state park website for updates if you’re biking. As others have said, the upstairs bathroom was pretty tight, but the bedrooms and living areas were spacious. We enjoyed the porches and pretty backyard.
Great place for our annual sibling retreat. All the rooms are very inviting. We especially enjoyed the front porch and dining room for gathering and playing card games. Kitchen is well equipped with plenty of dishes, glasses, cups, flatware and other cooking needs. We appreciated the parking space behind the house. The stairs to the upstairs bedrooms has a handrail on the lower section but not from the landing to the top. It’s the only thing we older folk wished for in this house. Communication with the owners was good. Richard stopped by shortly after we arrived to welcome us and make sure we had what we needed. Would recommend Nana’s Place to others.
Quaint, cozy and comfortable
Above all my expectations for cleanliness, location and amenities. All agreed this is a wonderful property.
Owner is accommodating with check in etc . Although I have stayed at two properties with them , he has come banging on the doors both times which is quite disturbing.. This property is not for anyone with disabilities or handicap due to the steep steps and tiny bathrooms.. there is a major safety hazard on the back deck as there is a step down and the deck flooring is all one color and in darkness or whatever you will not notice. The parking is behind the house with no gravel driveway or anything so it was sopping wet when we were trying to load. Kitchen was well equipped and bed downstairs was comfortable .
This home was exactly as pictured! The neighborhood was quiet and close to the river. Our only problem, no cell service at best spotty. The owners provide a land line which made us more comfortable in case a family member would need us. We would definitely return to this home.
Our moms had a wonderful stay. The house was really comfortable and beautifully decorated for Christmas. The house is well- equipped and the location perfect....highly recommended!
Everything we needed!
Lovely place to stay for a beautiful ride on the New River Trail.
The home was outfitted very nicely for a comfortable weekend stay with excellent proximity to the Fries Spur of the New River Trail. Loved it!
Perfect home for six of us to stay. We came to fries for the Thursday night Jam (wonderful!) and the home is very very convenient, and lovely. Zero complaints. We'll be back!
The property was exactly as expected. The area is beautiful and the people in the neighborhood were friendly and welcoming .
House was very nice, clean and quiet. Enjoyed the stay very much. Plenty of room for the family. Parking was ample in the back. Would have liked to try a little fishing but, ran out of time. The only upgrade I have would be to install house numbers. Good thing I had the listing with the picture.
This has become one of our favorite places to stay. Spacious, great attention to detail, and such a nice front porch.
This is a super rental. Clean, very well stocked kitchen and the owners provided many personal care items (if you forgot anything, most likely it’s there). There is lots of space for a large group and the front porch is a great place to hang out. There is a full backyard with a deck, gas grill and outdoor furniture. It’s a short walk to a riverfront municipal park and the bike trail. We’ll come again! (If I was looking for a negative, it would be that the living space is broken up - not open concept , and the bathrooms are a little small. But I’m happy to trade that for the charm of an old house with a cozy front porch in a beautiful area.).
My friends and I rented this listing for a short girls escape. We were in search of rest and relaxation and I believe that was achieved here. Unfortunately, I was not able to stay but my friends indicated the space was incredibly clean and inviting. The only comment they mentioned was that due to the layout of this house, it felt cramped in certain areas -mainly the upstairs bathroom. But this is common in older homes. This property has been well maintained and cared for and the front porch is delightful- especially great for watching storms roll in!
Clean, comfortable, and quiet.
Great house in a nice neighborhood right beside the New River Trail.
Very clean and consistent with the pictures. Reminded us of staying at Grandma’s.
Great location in a quiet town, you can hear the river from the front porch.
We loved the location, truly stated, it's very close to the trail as well as walking distance to the dam. Galax is a short drive away if you'd like to eat out. The owners are very responsive. A bonus was that the neighbors were so friendly and helpful! We so enjoyed sitting on the front porch, chatting with neighbors and taking in the view. Everything was very clean and well stocked with all that you could need for cooking or baking and plenty of linens were provided. Beds were comfy. The hosts provided several snack options and even spare toiletries in case you forgot something as well as games and books. The only drawback was that the bathrooms, especially the upstairs one, were pretty small which may present difficulty for someone of a larger frame. Overall, it was a wonderful place to stay and we would definitely stay again!
