TERLINGUA RANCH: Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and including much of the town of Terlingua, Terlingua Ranch is a private subdivision of over 190,000 acres, divided into 9,500 tracts owned by about 5,000 individuals and crisscrossed by 1,100 miles of dirt and rock roads. Tracts range from five acres to several hundred acres. It is some of the most rugged and scenic land in Texas.
Back in the 1960’s, the Ghost Town and much of what later became “Terlingua Ranch” was owned by racing legend and car designer extraordinaire, Carol Shelby and some of his friends. The decided to promote the area by holding a chili cook-off in the then abandoned Ghost Town. That little stunt of a cook-off grew into CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) which now hosts nearly 500 chili cook-offs around the nation and internationally, all leading up the championship cook-off every year in Terlingua. Shelby and friends later subdivided the Ranch and started selling it off to hunters and rugged naturalists. Over the decades, the area was reborn and an eclectic community of nature lovers, artists, musicians, adventurers, and folks just wanting to escape from “civilization” has grown and started to resettle this rough country.
People have come and gone. New buildings have risen while others have fallen, Dreams have been realized and others crushed. Through it all, the land remains. The harsh desert and vast openness encourages positive development and slowly swallows up and recovers from past abuses. The old cinnabar mine sites and ranching outposts persist as relics and ghost towns, some redeveloped, some carefully preserved, and others dissolving back into the desert. Abandoned dreams eventually become points of interests for those of us that stumble upon them decades later. Terlingua Ranch is a bizarre mix of old and new, good and bad, growth and decline, all completely unregulated. Modern homes with high values and stunning designs stand beside dilapidated do-it-yourself mistakes and abandoned ruins of the 1800’s and early 1900’s.
The landscape is even more varied than the people and the structures. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, wild arroyos, dry and wet creeks, peaceful valleys, breathtaking badlands, moonscape like mud flats, the remains of ancient volcanoes, and fossilized ancient seabeds. All of it nurturing a vast array of plant life and wildlife. Around every corner and over every hill lies new and unexpected surprises.
The Ranch is now home to a few hundred hardy souls. It is also dotted with a diverse array of vacation rental lodging options and campsites. Like the diverse land, they range in quality, style, value, and price. A few are amazing dream destinations. Some are good places to sleep. Others are the stuff of nightmares. (We don’t manage any in the nightmare category.)
Big Bend Vacation Rentals started out in 2007 and initially managed three of the first four vacation rentals in the Terlingua and Terlingua Ranch area. We now manage dozens out of a couple of hundred options. We represent dozens of property owners and have hosted tens of thousands of guests. You can trust us as managers, and you can rely on the properties that we manage. We have become very selective about the properties and the property owners that we add to our portfolio. The property was very clean. Super cute house!!!
We came down with 4 telescopes it was amazing. We took several pictures of galaxies, the spiral galaxies were the best. With a bortle of a 1 it did not disappoint.
We had a great trip and I will come back again. Thank You All.
This property was perfect for us. The house was very roomy and spacious and well furnished. But the location was the fifth star. We like to be away, far away, from everything. This place was it. Wasn't too far from Big Bend or Terlingua, but far away from civilization. Beautiful and quiet place. Will be staying here again!
We completely enjoyed our stay here. It's very quiet and secluded and surrounded by beautiful views all the way around. The house has a lot of room and would have been ideal for the family that was supposed to be with us. It just wound up being my wife and I and we got to just enjoy each other while there. It's also not too far to Big Bend at all. We'll be going back to this place.
We were happy to find accommodations that allowed 5 adults to have plenty of space. The drive out of the ranch was a bit arduous but overall we were very happy with our stay.
Was looking for a place to feel remote and this was it. Had everything we needed. Beautiful views without even going into Big Bend. If you want to feel off the grid, then this place would be perfect.
The house exceeded our expectations. It was really well equipped but there was still lots of storage space for our things. Everything was comfortable. We enjoyed being able to relax in an incredibly peaceful environment. On clear nights the night sky was spectacular. It was a great place to stay.
Our overall stay was great! The reason I gave the Timeless Ranch less than a perfect score is that the there were several things that did not work in the home. The main item that did not work was the internet. I was scheduled to do a quarterley report on my pacemaker function the morning of February 20 which I could not do because there is no mobile phone service nor was there an internet connection. The main lights in the kitchen would not come on. (Probably need a couple of new bulbs) The lamp on the right side of the bed in the master bedroom does not work and the hair dryer in the master bathroom does not work. (Trips the GFI when you plug it in) The back door could use a railing for us less stable people who do not want to fall off the steps. We were pleasantly surprised by the great selection of books in your library as well as the comfortable beds in all of the bedrooms. Overall Timeless Ranch would get a perfect score from us if there were some minor maintenance items taken care of. Thank you for a great stay. We enjoyed the remote location of your home and the proximity to Big Bend National Park which we totally enjoyed.
Lots of room, inside and out, and this place offered a great way to get away for a few days during our Big Bend trip. The kitchen and rest of the house was well-stocked, and everything was clean and in good repair. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to friends who are looking for some solitude, beautiful views, dark nights and starry skies.
We had an absolutely wonderful stay. The peace and quiet is like nothing I've ever experienced. Will be back!
The property was perfect for what we were looking for: Isolation, clean, well equipt, functional. Will definitely stay at this property, and recommend this property, for each visit to area. The dirt road was a little rough, I would highly recommend 4x4, trucks, cars with good road clearance.
Great stay, with the exception of the hail storm!! Loved coming back to this well appointed, super comfortable house after spending the days in Big bend. Would stay again!!
I'd love to give Timeless Ranch a 5-star review. The property was remote which allowed us to enjoy the starry night sky. The home was well equipped for my family of 5. Unfortunately, upon check-in, it was obvious that the home had been unoccupied for a few weeks and mice had found their way into the home. At first we weren't too concerned - it was was just mice and not rats. The next morning, it was obvious that there was a LOT more rodent activity overnight despite our presence and we decided that it might not be the best environment for kids. We contacted Daryl, the property manager, who promptly swung into action. He found us an alternate property for the remainder of our stay, had cleaners sweep the house for a deep clean, placed traps around the house himself, and scheduled an exterminator to come out to ensure the problem was resolved permanently. Our visit to Big Bend was awesome thanks to Daryl and his support. While Timeless Ranch was not ideal for us (at that time in that condition), it was still a great property and will suit future visitors well once the mice have been evicted.
Timeless Ranch was a cozy getaway from the rest of the world. The house was very well stocked with towels, blankets, games, kitchen items, even shampoo and butter! We enjoyed it very much. Everything was in good working condition and clean. Time runs slower at Big Bend. Distances are very far, but the drive is beautiful. House is on a dirt road and 40 min drive to anywhere. Use water sparingly. We ran out of water on the last day (4th day) with 7 people showering daily.
Wonderful! Way beyond our expectations. Clean, comfortable with a personal touch. We felt very at home and the astronomy skies were magical.
We satisfied with property.
The Timeless Ranch had everything we needed, with plenty of room for the whole family. Very clean, comfortable, private, and spacious. Will book again for our next trip to Texas. Ed and Carla Luzadder
We used the house as our base to go to big bend national park. The house was clean, the beds were great. It worked out well for us. Thanks!
This home was the cleanest vacation house we had ever stayed. The house was well stocked with everything you need and more. The location was very good, the dirt road to get to the house was not as rough as some of the other ones in the area.
We loved staying here. It was exactly the remote location we were hoping for. Very relaxing with beautiful views and about 45 mins from Big Bend main entrance. The home itself was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed and more! Thank you for sharing your property with me and my kids for our spring break trip!
We really enjoyed our stay here. The owners provided everything we could possibly need. The kitchen was truly well stocked (many places we have stayed claim this, but are so far from it.)! The bed was very comfortable. The night sky is amazing. We would definitely come back.
We can to this area to spend time landscape painting at Big Bend . This house was spacious, clean , comfortable beds .... huge living room. It had everything we neede. It was a bit off the beaten path but out here in this area what isn’t? And we enjoyed being away from it all. Thank you we hope to be returning.
The description of Timeless Ranch was completely accurate. The house was clean, comfortable and well equipped. The location is great for exploring the surrounding area, including Big Bend. Peaceful, quiet and comfortable. A great place to relax. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place to be.
Good impression needs an exterminator to over see mice issues.
We enjoyed our stay at Timeless Ranch. The property was clean and had what we needed for our stay. The dirt road was a little intimidating the first time, but we got used to it and it was not a problem. You don't need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The stars are amazing and the sun rises and sets are beautiful.
We loved our stay at Timeless Ranch, so close to Big Bend National Park. Saw lots of wildlife can’t wait to come back. Great house, very well stocked, fast internet and nice and clean.
It was a really comfy stay. It has a really at home feel. Everything was clean. Beds were nice and very comfy. Highly recommend. I will definitely come back to this house when I come visit again. Good price for what the house offers.
If you're looking for solitude and peace, this is the place. The house itself is beautiful and spacious and wonderfully decorated. I highly recommend it! We loved it!
We had a great time. The property was very clean and spacious. Well equipped kitchen.
Our family of 5 had a nice 4 nights stay at Timeless Ranch over Spring Break. It had everything we needed to enjoy the Big Bend area. Thank you!
