Built just after the Civil War, the Ice House is a three bedroom house located in Ross Alley in the heart of historic Old Town Alexandria. The Ice House has been completely renovated to include a recent kitchen remodel. Pets are welcome at the Ice House!
Because it was built in the 19th century as a warehouse, the Ice House is unusually wide for Old Town and provides an open and spacious living space that is perfect for families (compare to other local options). Upstairs on the second floor is a fully stocked modern kitchen with plates and silverware for 12 people. A Keurig, Nespresso and a Chemex provide a multitude of options for coffee (and there is a Starbucks only 400 feet away). Sub-Zero refrigerator and Miele dishwasher are consistent with the level of finishes in this house.
An especially large and deep couch provides plenty of seating for watching movies or television. Because the main living room has a "flounder" roof, it gets wonderful light and it perfect for lounging after a day of visiting the many local historic sites.
Further upstairs is a roof deck with a gas grill, chaise lounges and seating for al fresco dining and relaxation.
Downstairs, the largest bedroom has a king bed (Tempur-Pedic mattress), while the second bedroom has a beautiful antique queen bed (Tempur-Pedic mattress), and the third bedroom contains a full-sized hide-a-bed. There is also a very large and deep couch in the upstairs family room that could be utilized as a bed. The bed linens are by Boll & Branch.
There is a full bathroom downstairs and a half bathroom upstairs.
This property has a walkscore of 99! A bikescore of 87! You are just steps from the corner of King and Washington - arguably this is the closest residential property from this hub of Old Town activity - but the Ice House is hidden in a quiet alley away from the bustle of King Street. Hop on the free shuttle up to the King Street Metro to head to DC. Or take the water taxi just five blocks south at the base of Cameron Street. The water taxi goes to the Wharf, National Harbor (gambling and shopping), and the National's stadium (during the season). The Ice House is just 3 miles from Washington Reagan National Airport and 2 miles across the bridge from the Gaylord National Harbor.
The Mount Vernon trail is so close and nothing beats a bike ride up or down the Potomac along a protected bike path maintained by the National Parks Service.
While other locations in Old Town may claim to be central, this is it! You can walk to close to 100 restaurants from the Ice House. Walgreens and CVS are just steps away. And there are 5 grocery stores within walking distance, including a Trader Joes, Harris Teeter, Balduccis, Safeway, and a Whole Foods. The Saturday farmer's market is only two blocks away.
Please inquire about parking. There is no parking space at the Ice House, but there is a self-park City parking lot just 250 feet away ($10 a day on weekdays and $5 on weekends).
There is an additional charge for parties of adults of 5 or greater; there is no additional charge for children.
We had a lovely stay in your beautiful home with our family for our daughter's graduation from Georgetown Law. The Ice House is centrally located in Old Town Alexandria, which gives you a chance to see and feel the historic area. The roof top porch was a treat for meals and late night chats. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful space!
We loved the Ice House and we plan to go back next time we are visiting the area. The location is PERFECT. Right in the middle of everything but set back off the street. It was beautifully decorated and modernized while keeping the old charm of the place. The information packet they left at arrival was priceless. Great hosts for a great place! We can’t wait to go again!
This was a fantastic place to stay in Old Town. We could walk to shops and restaurants, and plenty of room for the family to spread out.
Wonderful stay at the Ice House! We were comfortable, had plenty of room to gather and relax. Couldn’t ask for a better location for enjoying Old Town Alexandria
We loved our stay at the Ice House. The location was convenient to restaurants, shopping and exploring. The home was warm and inviting and Scot and Susan provide everything you need for your stay. The home is beautifully renovated and included so many historical pictures and information. We enjoyed the albums and games in our down time. We parked our car in the garage at 218 Cameron and left it for the week. It was convenient (one block away) and VERY reasonable. We have already recommended the Ice House to several friends.
Our family of 5 had a wonderful time at this townhouse in Old Town Alexandria. We couldn't have picked a better location (right off King St and by the free trolley and bus stops) or a better place to stay. Everything in it was of the upmost quality from the linens to the Spode coffee cups. Not a detail left out. We loved having the Kuerig and the espresso machine and the essentials in the kitchen that we needed were all there. The deck on the 3rd floor, lights, grill, loved it! There were 5 of us, but, 6-7 could easily sleep there. The owners, Scot and Susan, were super responsive, very nice and so easy to work with. They provided all of the info we needed to make our trip great! If we go back to DC, we will definitely stay here again!!
Very nice, comfortable home. The beds were comfortable and linens were nice. The location was great, close walk to everything.
We can’t recommend this rental enough! We spent the holidays at Scot and Susan’s place. It’s well appointed, very comfortable and perfectly located. Being New Yorkers it was nice not to have to rely on our car all the time. Everything you need is a very easy walk away.
We loved our stay at the Ice House! The location is amazing - right in the center of Old Town, but off the main street, so nice and quiet. Everything we needed was within walkable distances. The home was well stocked with everything we needed to feel at home for a week. We used the home both as a retreat at the end of a day touring, and as a place to host family members in town. It really felt like "home". We were especially pleased we could bring our little pup with us : )
We just had a wonderful stay at the Ice House with our family. Plenty of room for our family of 5. The house is beautiful. Everything was clean and worked well. It was great to walk to all the coffee shops and restaurants in the area and easy access via Metro or car to all the historical tourist locations in the area and in DC. I'd look forward to staying here again.
The Ice House was everything we expected and more! It was a terrific location, all the comforts of home (and a little more!) in a beautiful historic environment. Loved it! Anna
The Ice House was comfortable and centrally located to all shops and restaurants in Old Town. Narrow stairs and 2 levels make it more challenging when you have dogs and kids but otherwise a good option for those staying in Old Town that want to extra historical component.
We had a wonderful time at the IceHouse!! The location is great, close to the shopping on King St, Starbucks (down the alley and across the street) and market on Saturday. The house has a nice rooftop for AM coffee, well stocked, lots of games and beautifully old with an amazing interior. The beds were comfy with nice linens as well as the pullout sofa. There are a few provisions like baggies, garbage bags, spices, etc which is a big help. We took the water ferry and train into DC which was fun and easy. The hosts were always accessible and responed within a few minutes. There is a camera above the exterior front door which allows the owners to keep an eye out for safety. We will return when were in the area!
From start to finish, our experience at The Old Ice House was perfect !! This home is absolutely gorgeous, spotless, quiet, well equipped and the location cannot be beat. Scot and Susan are lovely hosts. They are friendly, extremely thoughtful and quick to respond to questions. We appreciated all of their kind and special touches too. There was plenty of room for our family of 5 adults, the rooftop deck is To Die For and all of the furniture, beds/linens are extremely comfortable. We loved being able to have our pups with us and we truly look forward to returning soon. We highly recommend this 5 Star home and experience to all. Thank you Scot and Susan. We hated to leave. With kindest regards, Katrina and Carroll
The Ice House was a wonderful place to stay in Old Town Alexandria. Everything you could possibly need was within walking distance. I love how dog friendly the area is... too bad we had to leave our dog back in Texas. The house itself was so comfortable and beautiful. Although there is no onsite parking we had no problem parking in the public lot around the corner. Thank you for the stay.
Super cool place to stay! Great location from which to explore the historic part of town & beyond. The owners, Scot & Susan, (...who have great taste, btw) thoughtfully provide the little extras you might forget to bring with you. Thoroughly enjoyed our time here and plan to return!
We loved our stay at the ice house. Everything was beautiful and comfortable. Our 3 yr old and 5 yr old girls loved having their own rooms and the kitchen had everything I needed. It’s in a wonderful location and street parking was easy.
The house is close to everything you need in Old Town. The rooftop deck is the best part, and we were lucky enough to have great weather during our stay. The kitchen and living room are great. The only drawback is the one full bathroom- it's a little small when there are 2 adult couples sharing the house. For a short period of time it was okay.
we had a wonderful stay at the ice house. it is in a rare, historic part of the dc area, only minutes by car to the Mall. so many unique restaurants and boutiques within walking distance. the icehouse is a modern design interior, with a great layout, and spacious enough for our family of four. the finest linens and most comfortable beds. we loved the new rooftop gas grill. all amenities are provided, even coffee. and wifi at very high speeds. the owners are very kind and helpful. we will definitely stay here again. you will be lucky to stay in such a place...
We are a family of six (4children under the age of 7 and youngest 17mo). As you can imagine we are very busy and need for ge extra room. The house is incredible. They made use of every space of the small sq footage of the home without feeling crowded. It was very clean and I clean ALOT as a mom of 4. We needed the washer and dryer and everything was provided for that need. Linens and pillows and towels were excellent- like new quality. The kitchen has basic cooking/baking items. We did cook at the house vs. going out to eat. We shopped at The Giant store just a few minutes away but there is also some within walking distance as well like Trader Joe’s and Harris Teeter. You cannot park in the alley but for a limited time to unload. We found street parking easily and used the parking apps like Pango to pay the meter. Driving into the Capitol was very easy! If you come from a city like Chicago you will fell right at home. We used the Parkmobile App to find parking spots to all the attractions and museums. Overall we were sad to leave, and hope to return in the future as the kids get a little older and the younger children have a new appreciation for travel. It is a beautiful area and Alexandria has a lot to offer. Thank you to Susan and Scot for their hospitality they were easily available and accommodating.
The Ice House is beautifully rennovated, the hosts provide everything you need. It's in a perfect location. It was the perfect place to relax for a few days, and watch the unexpected snowfall. The only thing that could top the snow is a warm day where you could spend time on the upstairs deck. The kitchen is well appointed, and the bedrooms are super comfortable, as well as the very spacious living room.
Absolutely the PERFECT location! The hosts went over and above all expectations to make sure we were all comfortable. Would highly recommend this house for any stay to the Washington DC area! The house’s character was charming and so authentic!! Loved it!
The owners are so kind and thoughtful and even checked in (via email) to see if we needed anything. The home is amazing and so much fun as it is a historic home with rich culture and history all around you. Alexandria is the greatest and the home is centrally located in a way that you are within walking distance of shops, malls, restaurants, metro, and so much more. Even though you’re in the center of it all the home is super cozy and tucked away in a quiet alley which makes it super comfy. We spent hours snuggled up watching movies and cooking in the amazing kitchen. We can’t wait to come back to Alexandria soon and will definitely look for the Ice House again :) Thanks so much for a wonderful stay!
Totally enjoyed our stay.Scott and Susan did a terrific job of making us feel at home. Great location , well appointed home, just an all around great experience.
This lovely home is located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. It is a historic property, comfortably and tastefully decorated, melding the charm of the old with every convenience of today. The property did not disappoint. It was sparkling clean and equipped with many extras creating an upscale rental. Being situated on a side street makes this rental very private and quiet. The side windows and deck overlooks a beautiful gated garden. The home is conveniently located for exploring Alexandria and visiting the District. This unique property will not disappoint!
The house is extraordinarily beautiful. It's full of interesting artwork and designs and is incredibly comfortable. I highly recommend it for any occasion. Susan and Scot were so helpful and kind. It's the perfect place for a trip to historical Alexandria!
We had a great stay at the Ice House. The property's location took us by surprise, as it is in an alley behind a restaurant. This wasn't a problem at all, however, as the location is within easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the trolley stop. It was quite quiet (no street noise, and never heard the restaurant despite being there during a holiday weekend). Inside, the place is furnished quite nicely. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen well stocked, and there is plenty of seating in the living room for the entire family. It was too cold to take advantage of the rooftop patio, but it looked quite nice. We didn't have any problems. We would highly recommend the Ice House for families or groups staying in Old Town.
We had an amazing stay at the Ice House! It is a gorgeous home away from home in a perfect Old town location. The historic Ice House is beautifully renovated and a very comfortable, spacious home with gorgeous wooden floors, wooden beams, and exposed brick. Scot and Susan are incredible hosts (and amazing people). They are very thoughtful, warm and generous hosts. We couldn’t recommend it more highly!
Not only was the Ice House perfectly clean, well organized and beautifully charming, but Scot and Susan were the most amazing hosts. There were small touches throughout from their book of recommendations (and non recommendations) to the bottles of wine they left for us to enjoy. I could not have been happier with our choice to stay at the Ice House. I was in town with my 14 month olf daughter for work. My husband joined us over the weekend and we had a fantastic time. There is so much space for a small-medium size family to enjoy. The location is just perfect; close to everything in Old Town. Scot and Susan were super accommodating and very communicative about any needs that arose (hardly any) and suggestions on what to do over the weekend. I did not want to leave. Thank you for an amazing stay!
