Positives... The views of Lake Michigan were stunning. The cottage was clean. The owner was always quick to respond and easy to work with. Easy drive to downtown shopping and restaurants. Negatives... bringing our own sheets and towels was disappointing. For the cost per night, bedding and towels should have been included. There was major construction in the yard that we were unaware of prior to check-in but the host was helpful with this and the foreman was understanding. We would stay here again!
The cottage appeared larger in pictures than the reality. The kitchen was well supplied. Main floor bedroom was great. However, the upstairs bedrooms were small and NO HAND RAILINGS up the flight of stairs. Also, the shoreline was under construction and no lake front deck was available.
Older cottage but had good character. We had 8 adults which was pretty cozy but it served the purpose well. No access to the lake due to the shoreline restoration but we were aware of that at booking. Well equipped overall.
Beautiful location right on Lake Michigan! Just what we needed for a buddy golf weekend. Would definitely stay there again, the sunsets were unreal! Thank you!
The Cottage is adorable and the location is amazing! However, calling it a 4 bedroom is misleading and there were a few things that left to be desired. First, the good things: Clean, cute, amazing yard, quiet neighborhood and surroundings, incredible views and sunsets, we overall had a great time! The not so great things and I would say they all go under the category of given the price, we expected more attention to detail: 1) Weeds were overgrown leading down to the beach. This year was the worst year on the beaches, which we get, but maybe trim back some of the sticker weeds so the kids can get down without shoes to play in what's left of the sand. 2) The landscaping along one side of the house was so overgrown that you couldn't walk along the path to the back of the house to hang wet clothes. 3) Dog poop by the back door - really? 4) Check in is pretty late at 6 pm. I emailed the property owner about check in process multiple days in advance (because we were flying into town, a little high-strung (that's on me) and wanted to be sure we were all set), then emailed the owner multiple times the day of, and only heard from the property owner two times during the entire process - 30 days before the trip to get payment and 30 min before check in with instructions. I really thought that we were going to have to find another place to stay. I would have liked a little communication - even if it was 24 hours in advance. 5) The 4 bedrooms. There are 2 full bedrooms and 1 loft area. The loft area has 2 twin beds separated by the stairs landing. They are not 2 bedrooms by any stretch. 6) The owner stated that they replaced the mattresses, but they actually added pillow toppers to the beds instead. They were comfortable like a pillow topper - but not new. All the bedding was mismatched and cobbled together. Again, with the price and attention to detail, maybe a little matching set of sheets in the rooms - even if they're plain white. It felt thrown together and pulled from a random linen closet. Overall, it was lovely because the property location is lovely.
The place has beautiful views of lake Michigan and a nice back yard. The house itself is cute, but the kitchen could use a clean-out (lots of outdated items that do not work in drawers (2 can openers did not work, had to borrow a neighbors in order to make dinner one night), spatulas, pans... I would recommend supplying linens and towels due to weekly price (all other places we looked at do provide) as this is an inconvenience for trip packing... The bedroom sizes are small, but functional, however, the bed mattresses are very uncomfortable and in need of replacing.
We had a beautiful week at the Whimsical Cottage in Holland. The views were amazing and the location of the cottage is ideal to many of the local beaches and Holland. I would like to point out that the beach is nonexistent because of the high water levels this summer. Also, I would not recommend this cottage for small children and seniors if your primary purpose is to spend time on the beach. The stairway to the beach is very unsafe - stairs going about 30 steps down and then you have about 30 feet with no stairs (there is a rope you can use to help support you while you go down a steep slope of sand) and then another set of stairs to take you down to a landing above the water (about 2 feet). We were disappointed in the beach situation - but, this is true of all cottages in the area.
Such a great spot in West Michigan! First of all, summer vacation in W. Michigan is just the best! This little cottage plays a small part in what makes it so awesome. The views, back yard fun, hammock, beach and just the overall quaint nature of the house played into a great experience for my family and I. Nicole is a very responsive host and everything that she said would happen did. Things were nice and clean on arrival and a nice welcome pack was ready for us when we got there. Any questions that came up while we were there received a quick response. If we had any recommendations or need for improvement it would be an upgrade in the beds. The mattresses were pretty firm and having to bring so much bedding/towels/etc with us created quite a bit of extra work. We were fully aware of the need to bring bedding/towels so that isn't on the host, but would be a nice feature to consider adding. We would definitely consider going back if we could improve the bedding for comfort. Overall, great experience and a caring host!
