Riverview is a community in Hillsborough County on Florida’s Gulf coast. With a population of over 72,000, Riverview is larger than many other cities in Florida even though Riverview is not a city itself. Instead, it is an unincorporated census designated place located south of Tampa and north of Ruskin.  The entire Tampa metropolitan area has a population of just over 2.8 million.

 

Riverview features a humid subtropical climate which often presents frequent thunderstorms during the hotter summer weather. The average temperatures in Riverview ranges from the low 70s in the winter to the low 90s during the summer.

 

Riverview is home to many fascinating attractions that draw both tourists and local residents alike. One of the more interesting is the International Independent Showman’s Museum which is the largest and most comprehensive archive of carnival and circus memorabilia in the country. This museum has historic artifacts dating back to the first circus in America which is credited to John Bill Rickets in 1793. You won’t find anywhere else with the vast array of photographs and memorabilia chronicling the amazing history of circus and carnival life in America.

 

For the nature lovers, Riverview offers an impressive collection of beautiful and scenic nature preserves. The two most prominent nature preserves in Riverview are the neighboring Balm-Boyette Scrub Nature Preserve and Triple Creek Preserve. Balm-Boyette is a 5000-acre swath of preserve land which features many endangered plants and animals such as the Florida Golden Aster, Eastern Indigo Snake, Sherman’s Fox Squirrel, and Florida Sandhill Crane. The Triple Creek Preserve is 971 acres and features two miles of hiking trails that link to Balm-Boyette.           

 

Schools in Riverview are administered through the Hillsborough County Public School Division. This has a distinction of being the eighth largest school district in the United States. Riverview has many outstanding schools whether they’re public, private, or charter/alternative. Included amongst the top rated schools in Riverview are: Valrico Lake Advantage Academy, Sessums Elementary School, Winthrop Charter School, and Bell Creek Academy High School.
