Built on the shores of Tampa Bay, Ruskin is a lovely, family-friendly community in Hillsborough County, Florida. It lies in the proximity of the Ruskin Inlet and the Little Manatee River and around 16 miles southeast of Tampa. The unincorporated census-designated place supposedly covers some 21 square miles, of which about 1,150 acres is designated for Natural Preservation. U.S. Route 41 runs through its center.
Around the period of Hernando de Soto's expedition in 1539, this district was included in the Florida chiefdom of Uzita. It was established on the shores of the Little Manatee River in 1908 by Dr. George McAnelly Miller, a professor at Ruskin College in Trenton, Missouri and an ex-prosecuting attorney in Chicago, and his wife Mrs. Adaline D. Miller. The community was named for John Ruskin, a 19th English essayist and social reformist who formed the guild of St. George. Many of the inhabitants were farmers until the 1970s when the number of suburbanites became quite substantial.
Ruskin had a total of 17,208 residents, according to the 2010 U.S. Census data. That figure represented more than twice the number of residents living there as of the 2000 census. Some estimate that more than 22,000 people will call this community home by 2025, but the number looks to be substantially higher at the present rate of growth. It is projected that more than 9,000 homes will be there by that year, compared to 5,632 housing units in 2000. Some of the notable individuals that have been associated with Ruskin include singers Aaron Carter and Leslie Carter, and musician Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys.
Ruskin is home to an Amazon warehouse, which provides significant number of jobs for the locals. The facility, which is said to measure more than one million square feet in size, is approximately 10 times larger than a typical Home Depot. The online retail giant revealed in 2016 that it would provide an on-site training center at the warehouse to enable its employees enroll in college courses, as reported by The Tampa Tribune.
The first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) school in Hillsborough County, the J. Vince Thompson Elementary School, was opened in Ruskin in 2014. LEED certification is awarded in recognition of building strategies and practices that take the environment into consideration.
Ruskin has numerous places of historical or recreational interest. The area boasts several historical areas, a good number of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Among these is Leisey Shell Pits, which has probably the largest Ice Age fossil deposit in the world. Other places of interest include A.P. Dickman House, George McA Miller House, Cockroach Key, and Firehouse Cultural Center. E.G. Simmons Regional Park, Ruskin Drive-In Theatre and Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center also offer you different enjoyable things to do in your leisure.
This is a caring community whose original ideals included equality, united effort and providing a home for everyone. The observed needs of local Hispanic/Latino families, who constitute a consideration proportion of residents, have led to special childcare and learning opportunities being provided to them by the Redlands Christian Migrant Association. Having experienced significant expansion in recent years, Ruskin is also anticipating even more in the future and claims to be planning for such well in advance to make it a great place to both live and work.
