Valrico, Florida

Valrico is a major community of more than 35,000 located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The census-designated place (CDP) lies on a total area of almost six square miles, of which less than 1.5 percent is water. It is a great place for families and those interested in having well-educated individuals for neighbors. The community is said to be made up of 14 neighborhoods.

Cotton plantations used to occupy the present location of Valrico. At that time, the area was known as Long Pond. William G. Tousey, a philosophy professor, arrived here in the 1880's to make an acquisition. The area's name was changed to "Valrico," which is Spanish for "rich valley." The construction of railroad through the area brought a high number of new immigrants in 1890. Significant community development commenced following the completion of the railroad.

The Great Freeze brought about a decline in the population of the community, which by then already boasted several retail stores and even a bank. The number of residents was down to just about 50 by 1911. In spite of the challenges faced over the years, Valrico did not relent. The linking of State Route 60 to Adamo Dr. in Tampa played a vital role in the influx of people that has been seen here from the mid-1950son.

This city has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. The number of residents stood at 35,545 as of Census 2010, way beyond the 6,582 recorded in 2000. Majority of the people living here are younger than 45 years. The median age was 39 years as of 2000 census, when the number of housing units was 2,831. Majority of the homes in Valrico are owner-occupied.

The community is home to many highly-educated people, a good number of which work in knowledge-based occupations and from home. The percentage of adults with a minimum of a college degree is considerably higher than that of an average community in the United States.

Valrico is served by more than two dozen schools, both public and private. These include  Alafia Elementary School, Grace Christian School, Cimino Elementary School, Lithia Springs Elementary, Randall Middle School, Barrington Middle School, Foundation Christian Academy, Bloomingdale High School and Durant High School.

Valrico has grown to become an important family-friendly community. With majority of the population married, the CDP is home to many families and gives new families opportunity to establish social connections with similar people. Many of the people in this community live in single-family homes with ample space for children to play. One of the things new families will like about Valrico is that the crime rate there is lower than the average for all U.S. cities.

With a good educational system, low crime rate and high number of college-educated adult residents, Valrico has enough qualities to appeal to families in search of a decent place to raise their children. The CDP lies along a major highway in Florida providing access to many major urban areas across the state. It offers a fantastic community to establish new and potentially rewarding social relationships.
