Private Vacation Home

Characterful property in 5 acres of land above Hebden Bridge with private sauna

Hebden Bridge, Hebden Bridge, United Kingdom

The ground floor accommodation is extremely stylishly appointed with a large, open-plan living/dining room at its centre. This room features Jacobean-style painted wall panelling as a stunning backdrop. Stone mullion windows, beamed ceilings, oak floors and doors lend a sense of rustic charm to the fabric of the building and yet there is every modern amenity. From a stable-door on one side and French windows on the other, there is access to wooded and landscaped gardens with long-reaching views of the surrounding countryside and a private area to sit and enjoy the location. A bird feeder regularly attracts woodpeckers, jays and other garden visitors and deer and hares can often be spotted in the woods. Last summer we were lucky enough to spend many a summer evening watching a barn owl hunting in the fields in front of the house!brBrian and Carolyn Harrison have used their knowledge of interiors garnered from over 30 years working as freelance journalists on national and international home-interest magazines to refurbish and decorate what is essentially part of their home – albeit completely separate with its own front and back doors. ‘We have tried to instil a real sense of home from home with every possible comfort included.’brWe also have a wonderful sauna in a separate building, a few steps away from the barn. It has an area to relax on loungers in a warm, under-floor heated environment and in the same building a cold rain shower so that you can have the hot and cold experience. Decking that runs around the building affords beautiful views over the valleybrbrThe location is second to none for walking enthusiasts with some amazing routes accessed directly from the property up to the nearby heather-clad grouse moors or down to Colden Water – a beautiful woodland with river running through it.brbrAs keen walkers ourselves and being semi-retired with a lively, energetic standard poodle called Ruby as part of the family, we know most of the local footpaths and can’t wait to share them with you.brCycling is another very popular pastime in the area and the routes can be very challenging, which is why you often see mountain bikers using the area to practise for competitions. If you wish to bring your bikes – there is a locked and alarmed shed in which to store them.brbrIf you just want to explore the area, there are plenty of interesting places to visit. Hebden Bridge itself - a really buzzing and vibrant little town - is only 2 miles away and can be reached by bus twice an hour from the top of our drive. Haworth – with the Bronte parsonage and its cobbled streets and quirky shops – is only 8 miles away and Halifax – location for the recent TV series Gentleman Jack and Last Tango in Halifax is 8.5 miles to the east by car. The larger conurbations of Leeds and Manchester are both accessible in around an hour by car, depending on traffic. There is also a good train service from Hebden to both cities.

It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.brbrTown: The village of Heptonstall is set high on a prominent hillside above its close neighbour, Hebden Bridge. Heptonstall is one of West Yorkshire's best kept secrets; a wonderfully preserved village with a main street that has changed very little in the last 200 years. Formerly an important centre for hand-loom weaving, the village still retains its original trading hall, while the old Grammar School, by the churchyard, is now a museum testifying to the village's illustrious past. The churchyard is also the burial home for the American poet, novelist & short-story writer Sylvia Plath, perhaps best known for her collections of published poems & novel The Bell Jar. Heptonstall was a place she stayed in before & during her marriage to the poet Ted Hughes. In the centre are the two remaining pubs, the Cross Inn, believed to date from the early 17th century, and the White Lion, rumoured to be haunted by a Roundhead on a horse, a throwback to when the village was besieged during the Civil War. Nearby is the attractive town of Hebden Bridge, while the area is a must for steam railway enthusiasts who will enjoy the thriving Worth Valley Railway. Skipton, the Gateway to the Dales, is an easy and scenic car ride away.
