Stay In A Historic Firehouse

Clendenin, West Virginia, United States

This building is an old fire station converted to apartments. The second floor apartments were once used as bunkhouses for the volunteer firefighters. Recently remodeled and updated. The property is literally touching the Elk River Trail, 1 block from the river and a couple blocks from Main Street in a lovely/quiet little town of roughly 850 people. This is the place to unplug and unwind. Be sure to see the additional info and FAQs in the notes section.brbrbrThe spacebrSleeps up to 4 people in multiple configurations. (See below for more details)brbrThis unit is touching the new Elk River Trail. Hike, bike, jog, Segway, walk your dog or Emu. ((Currently, there are no known laws against walking your emu on the new trail. See page 14 for Emu fees.)))brOnly 1 block from the river.brWalking distance to downtown. (NOTE: The downtown area is historic and small. The town's population is about 850)brThere is 1 bar/restaurant, 1 brewery, 1 pizza place, a small stage where the town will host various bands and outdoor events.brUnit is only a few blocks from a public river access, we call the put in. If you have a kayak or stand up paddleboard, bring it.brbrSome Frequently Asked Questions:brDoes fire station have a pole to slide down (Unfortunately no)brDo the floors creak (A little bit!)brAre there any ghosts (Not that we know of!) but Clendenin, WV was the first sighting of the Mothman. (Come check it out!)brCan you walk to the river (Yes! Only 1 block away!)brHow far is the nearest river access for kayaking (The public access is on the other side of town. Walking distance, yes. But not while you portage your watercraft. (One Mile) There is a small park with parking for cars and boat trailers and is currently free to put in your boat. A larger boat area is just on the other side of the bridge. Less than a 5 minute drive)brbrThis unit is very unique and is historic. Check the photo we received from a man who actually worked in the building back in the 80's. There was a fire engine on one side of this building and a smaller water truck on the other side. The second floor was originally designed for the firefighters to bunk while they were on shift. Some of the rooms were used as exam rooms for those who needed urgent care or could not make it to Charleston to the official hospital.brbrDecades later, when it went into private ownership, there are stories of late night poker games, (verified by a local resident of the town) and rumors that one of the units may have been a brothel. If only the building could talk!brbrbrGuest accessbrThe main entry door is on the first floor. This door is equipped with a smart lock which will require an access code. Once inside, there is a short hallway and a decent size staircase with automatic motion lights and for your safety, 2 security cameras. At the landing, you'll find 2 doors (A and B) your unit is Unit A and this door has a dumb lock, but it does have a code to enter. There are no cameras inside the private living space.brbrWe do not offer keys for any locks so please secure all doors when leaving and text us if you lose your code. Sometimes even smart locks can have dumb luck.brbrbrOther things to notebrWe've designed this experience to be configured in multiple ways. The second bedroom can be sleeping quarters with your choice of a bed, a futon, a desk or a set of bunk bends depending on your needs. (Additional fees may apply) Need room to sleep more people Maybe you want a short-term rental with an office. Bunk beds Day Beds This would be an ideal place to get away for a while and read or write a book.brbrThe entire second floor of this building will soon be able to be configured for large families or groups. Opposite this unit is another nearly identical unit (currently being remodeled). Both doors on the second floor can be opened providing a space with 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2 kitchens and 2 living rooms. Feel free to reach out to see how we can accommodate your special event, large family or business outing.

West Virginia Mystery House - An Escape Experience

Clendenin, West Virginia, United States

Step into a world where every detail could be a clue and each room holds its own secrets. This unique West Virginia mountain retreat doubles as an intricate puzzle experience designed to challenge even seasoned mystery solvers. From the moment you arrive, you'll be immersed in an adventure that tests your skills. Perfect for couples or small groups who love escape rooms, these challenges are not for beginners—prepare for an weekend of intense detective work.brbrbrThe spacebrThis isn't just any second-floor unit—it's a puzzle wrapped in an enigma, disguised as a cozy apartment. Behind its unassuming exterior, you'll find a private bedroom with a queen bed (we promise it's not a secret door... or is it ), plenty of seating for both relaxing and contemplating clues, and a smart TV for when your brain needs a break from all that mystery-solving.brbrThe full kitchen offers ample counter space for spreading out your puzzle pieces, creating theories, or just making breakfast. And yes, all the appliances are real and functional—not elaborate props (though we can neither confirm nor deny the presence of secret compartments).brbrFor those bringing actual transportation rather than solving imaginary riddles about it, we offer optional storage underneath in one of 4 garage bays to accommodate 4-wheelers, boats, kayaks, or Segways. Speaking of transportation—while there is a law in San Francisco that states you cannot walk your elephant down Market Street without a leash, we are proud to report that the town of Clendenin currently has no specific ordinances regarding elephant leashes. We are pet friendly, though we do request advance notice for pachyderms. Please reach out directly for our elephant rules and additional fees.brbrSafety note: Our secure entry system requires solving a puzzle to obtain your door code. Don't worry—we won't make you decode hieroglyphics... at least not until you're inside.brbrFun fact: The ceiling fans spin both clockwise and counterclockwise. This may or may not be relevant to your stay. (It's probably not, but in a puzzle house, you never know...)brbrP.S. - If you happen to solve any mysteries about why garage doors always squeak at the most dramatic moments, please let us know. That one's been puzzling us for years.brGuest accessbrYou'll have full use of the entire space—every nook, cranny, and mysteriously squeaky floorboard. The front entry features a smart lock, which requires solving a simple puzzle to obtain your entry code. (Don't worry, we won't make you translate ancient Sanskrit... yet.)brbrThe back door, maintaining its old-school charm, is operated by what we affectionately call a dumb lock. It's not that it failed lock school; it just believes in simplicity. We don't offer keys for any door locks because, let's face it, keys are so last century. Plus, they have an annoying habit of playing hide-and-seek at the most inconvenient moments.brbrPlease remember to secure all doors when leaving, and text us if you somehow manage to forget your code. (Though how one forgets a code that involves your favorite color, your pet dinosaur's middle name, and the square root of pie—kidding! It's much simpler than that. No it’s not. Yes it is.)brbrAs the saying goes, Even dumb players can have smart luck.br- Unknownbr(We suspect Unknown just couldn't remember their door code...)brbrAnd remember, while our smart lock is indeed quite clever, it occasionally likes to remind us that even smart things can have dumb moments. Like that time it decided to speak Spanish for an entire day. True story. Okay, not really, but wouldn't that make a great puzzle element brbrP.S. - If you hear the locks whispering late at night, it's probably just them sharing riddles. They're quite competitive that way.brbrP.P.S. - No, the locks don't actually whisper. Or do they br*cue mysterious music*brbrbrOther things to notebr.☛ PUZZLE PEOPLE, UNITE! This isn't your average mountain getaway. You'll need:brbr-Your thinking cap (no, really)br-A sense of adventurebr-The ability to look at ordinary things in extraordinary waysbr-A phone with a calculator (trust us on this one)br-The patience of a detective solving their biggest casebr-Friends who won't get mad when you shout I FOUND SOMETHING!brbr.☛ HELPFUL HINTS:brbr-Bookmark our contact info - you might need a hintbr-Plan to spend quality time here - rushing through puzzles is no funbr-Bring snacks - solving mysteries makes you hungrybr-Consider this a digital detox with a twist - your brain will be too busy for social mediabrbr.☛ IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTES:brbrThis experience contains numerous small puzzle pieces, clues, and items that could be hazardous to young childrenbrWhile families are welcome, this experience is designed for adults and older children who can understand puzzle conceptsbrParents of young children must actively supervise them throughout the staybrSome puzzles require careful handling of items - please treat all components with carebrIf you have any accessibility concerns, please message us before bookingbrbr.☛ BEST SUITED FOR:brbr-Puzzle enthusiastsbr-Escape room loversbr-Mystery solversbr-Adventure seekersbr-Groups who communicate wellbr-People who don't mind a good brain teaserbrbr.☛ NOT RECOMMENDED FOR:brbr-Those seeking a traditional rental experiencebr-Those seeking nothing other than pure financial gainbr-Groups with unsupervised young childrenbr-People who get frustrated easily with puzzlesbr-Those expecting a typical mountain vacationbr-Those within 2 weeks of having a baby. Please don't give birth in this place. Unless you must, but then we get to write about it.brbrRemember: Everything you need to solve the mysteries is provided - just bring your curiosity and problem-solving skills!
