When my Dad died and left us the house we didn’t want to change a thing about it, as if that could somehow bring us back to the joyous past. It really can’t bring you back but the house is as simple today as it was in 1955 when we bought it. We have added a new kitchen, air conditioning, cable tv, internet and a better heating system for the winter, but the feel of the place is still 1960 strong. The Pebbles underwent a multi-million dollar restoration, renovation and modernization from 2021 to the beginning of 2023. The house is a fantastic blend of history with the modern amenities of a luxury home.brThe Pebbles is the last of Stone Harborï¿½s grand old Victorian homes since it was built in 1909, five years before Stone Harbor incorporated, featuring a secret staircase for servants, so their presence did not disturb the family and guests. The Pebbles entertained many politicians, including NJ Governor Woodrow Wilson, who later became President, and NY Mayor Jimmy Walker. In 1939 it was sold to Carlton Richards who turned it into a guest house. He took up the grass and put down pebbles which is how the house got its name. During the September hurricane of 1944, Richards invited those residents still on the island to use his house to shelter from the storm. While the storm raged, and the boardwalk and other houses were washed away, the Pebbles stood.brAs one of the largest homes available in Stone Harbor, it is a great gathering place for large families, family and friend reunions, and groups coming to the shore to stay over for rehearsal dinners, weddings, golf outings and business retreats. The first bedroom has a king size bed and wall air conditioner unit, the second bedroom has set of twin beds and a wall air conditioner unit. There is a living room in the front of the house with large smart TV, sofa, two comfortable chairs and a wall air conditioner unit. The back sun room that overlooks a large grass yard has a queen size sofa bed, free standing air conditioner, a TV and a door that closes the room off for privacy to use as a third bedroom. The eat in kitchen has a small dishwasher, microwave, full size refrigerator, glass electric stove and oven, coffee pot and all the essentials. The house has one full bath with shower/tub and hand rail and a large outdoor shower. brbrThere is a large grass yard with Gas BBQ, dining table and umbrella, lounge chairs, clothes line and outdoor shower. In the garage you will find the clothes dryer and the clothes washer is in house in the back living room closet. Also in the garage are beach chairs and beach toys for your use.
