Its heart is Washington Square Park (bounded by Frenchmen Street, Royal Street, Dauphine Street, and Elysian Fields Avenue). Frenchmen Street is the main nightlife district, with half a dozen live music clubs and just as many restaurants in four short blocks. At Mardi Gras, the Marigny is one of the city's hidden hot spots. Very popular with locals, who enjoy partying in the streets without the busy atmosphere of Bourbon Street. Crowds gather at the corner of Royal and Kerlerec (outside of R-Bar Inn) as well as at the intersection of Royal and Franklin. Elaborate costumes are the order of the day, along with brass bands and many drummers. Two weeks before Mardi Gras, the Marigny is also the starting place for the Krewe du Vieux, a satirical, raunchy parade in 19th-century Carnival style! Complete with small floats drawn by krewe members and mules. Local cafes, restaurants and music venues line Frenchmen Street. Known for its bohemian atmosphere, the Marigny is home to many artists and musicians, as well as a sizable gay and lesbian population. Among its notable residents are chef Paul Prudhomme, painter James Michalopoulas, and actors Harry Shearer and Jennifer Coolidge, who can be seen around town when they're not working in L.A. Local writers include New Orleans mystery writers, Julie Smith and J.M. Redmann, as well as Andrei Codrescu, Michael Swindle, and Kevin Allman. Frenchmen Street is in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood just below the lower edge of the Quarter. A 4 block stretch of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops mixed with live music venues make it one of the city's most hip places, catering more to locals than tourists (though tourists are certainly welcome, and welcomed). On any given night, one might find modern jazz, swinging traditional jazz, Latin American style music, rockabilly, and more within this small area.brbrbrbrGetting Around:brbrCan walk most places. If you’re really into nostalgia, there’s even a video game to have you strolling down memory lane. brbrGather the group around the living room HDTV to stream a movie or maybe a few episodes of the latest bingeable show. There is also a fully stocked kitchen and Complimentary WIFI. There are two bathrooms, and a washer/dryer. The perfect spot for a vacation!brbrbrbrThe Neighborhood:brbrThe Lower Garden District is famous for its parks, restaurants, and history!brbrbrbrThe area was originally developed between 1832 and 1900 and is considered one of the best-preserved collections of historic mansions in the Southern United States. The 19th-century origins of the Garden District illustrate wealthy newcomers building opulent structures based upon the prosperity of New Orleans in that era. brbrbrbrThis whole area was once a number of plantations, including the Livaudais Plantation. It was sold off in parcels to mainly wealthy Americans who did not want to live in the French Quarter with the Creoles. It became a part of the city of Lafayette in 1833, and was annexed by New Orleans in 1852. The district was laid out by New Orleans architect, planner, and surveyor Barthelemy Lafon.brbrbrbrOriginally the area was developed with only a couple of houses per block, each surrounded by a large garden, giving the district its name. In the late 19th century, some of these large lots were subdivided, as uptown New Orleans became more urban. This has produced a pattern for much of the neighborhood: of any given block having a couple of early 19th-century mansions surrounded by gingerbread-decorated late Victorian period houses. Thus, the Garden District is now known for its architecture more than for its gardens per se.brbrbrbrGetting Around:brbrVery close to St Charles Streetcar. Very short Lyft/Uber rides to French Quarter.brbrbrbrWalking distance to downtown, close to St Charles. Very quick Uber or Lyft to get you to the French Quarter!brbrbrbrWith a walkability score of 89, there’s no need to rent a car for your stay. The streetcar line passes four blocks from the house to take you through the Garden District, Uptown, and the French Quarter. Connecting to other streetcar lines, you can also access City Park and the Marigny.brbrbrbrFor everything else you can easily walk or take a short Lyft.brbrbrbrOther Things to Note:brbrThis home is a shot-gun style double. Meaning it has been divided into 2 separate homes with separate entrances. It is raised so there are about 5 or 6 steps outside to get up to the porch. Inside one bedroom and both bathrooms are located downstairs, the other 2 bedrooms are up a flight of stairs. Because it is a traditional shot-gun style home, this means all rooms are lined up in a row and you will walk through one to enter another (aside from the private restrooms).brbrbrbr If there’s anything – big or small – that we can do to make your stay better, please let us know. We’re constantly making improvements and welcome all suggestions :)brbrbrbrI manage several airbnb units in the area- if you think another unit may fit your needs better, feel free to take a look at my other listings before booking: brbrbrbrhttps://www.airbnb.com/users/112910785/listingsbrbrbrbrPlease respect the neighbors and do not make excessive noise late at night! Take the red streetcar line up Canal to the Cemeteries (Mid-City’s dead neighbors are as interesting as the live ones) or bike the new 2.6-mile-long Lafitte Greenway that stretches from Basin Street to Carrollton Avenue and, conveniently, past a po’ boy shop or two – or 17 – with a sno-ball shop and a micro-brewery thrown in for good measure.
