Serra de Monchique 'The Garden of the Algarve' Utopia, Well Almost!

The Algarve with its famous pristine beaches and micro climate offers the best year round holiday opportunities for the discerning holidaymaker. Quaint fishing ports and historic cities and villages compete for the tourists attention. Secure family beaches and the west coasts wild surfing beaches offer a broad variety of scenery and seaside activities.

Over 300 sunny days every year make the Algarve, Europes favourite holiday destination. The Serra De Monchique is the Algarve's best kept secret, founded by the Romans which provides a historic backdrop and its natural spring waters are said to rejuvenate and even lengthen our days!

Talking about Romans, it was the Romans that built the stone terraces in Villa Vida Nova's gardens. They were built to retain the excellent soil for growing vegetables and fruit to feed the Centurians and troops, these days the terraces are still there but it's not the Romans getting fat on all that fruit..................

Villa Vida Nova is available on a weekly basis, Saturday being the Check in/out days.

The Picturesque Town of Monchique

The delightful town of Monchique, which is only 2 minutes drive from the villa, has a pretty central square with street cafes in which to while away the time and people watch. There are beautiful gardens to admire and narrow historic streets to explore. By the way, parking is free everywhere in Monchique including the underground car park! There are several supermarkets for you to stock up on supplies, 3 butchers, numerous cafés and a tea room serving delicious home made food, two banks with cash points, two petrol stations, 2 chemists, wine shop, gift shops and newsagents selling foreign papers. Recently opened is the new Intermarche supermarket mall, with a selection of shops, plenty of parking and ideal to stock up your holiday provisions.

Superb Dining for all Tastes and Budgets

There are many excellent yet inexpensive local restaurants, some of the best are within walking distance of the villa. You will be tempted by the delicious regional fare, chicken piri-piri, black Iberian pork, wild boar with plums, lamb casserole, chicken with cherries, pork and prawn cataplana, stuffed squid, grilled fish, local cured ham and smoked sausage, honey and marzipan sweets just to name a few, all are locally produced. There is an amazing sellection of wines and ports to enhance your dining experience, don't forget to try the local firewater Medronho, and for the ladies, Melosa, served from a glass slipper! (You have to search for the slipper!)

The Serra da Monchique

Monchique is nestled in a valley between the only two mountains in the Algarve, Foia and Picota. The Romans who established Monchique , as mentioned above they built, with precision granite terraces all over the Serra de Monchique, you will see them everywhere. Villa Vida Nova nestles in 'Corga das Ervilhas' - Terraces of Peas! Corga is an ancient word not used these days and means 'Terraces'. Our terraces still produce, oranges, tangerines, lemons, plums, peaches, figs, sharon fruit, grapes, olives, cherries of which our guests are welcome to eat. We have also found, various stone hand tools, a bone needle, a bronze spur, a bronze buckle and slate buttons.

There are level walks, steep walks, walks to the top of Foia and walks to the cafes in town. Bird watching is very popular as we are on a major migratory route. Cork oak forests abound and offer welcome shade from the hot summer sun, and after all that exercise kick off your shoes and cool off in the infinity pool. Wind down with a glass of local wine or ice cold beer or test your culinary skills on the BBQ.

From the villa there are many attractions within a short drive. The peaks and contour roads of Foia and Picota afford 360 degree panoramic views, don't forget your camera! For the more adventurous, take some of the side roads and visit deserted watermills or the ghost village of Barbelote with its stunning cascade. The mountains here are quite spectacular and not to be missed ideal for the biker, hiker or just a casual stroll.

Local Spas and Wellness Centre.

The famous village of Caldas de Monchique with its health spa and wellness center is only 10 minutes drive away here you can take in the famous Monchique spring waters and enjoy being pampered in the health salons at either Hotel Termas de Monchique or Longevity Wellness Centre. In summer in the evening, you can listen to local live music whilst dining in the Caldas de Monchique square at Restaurant 1692.

A Short Drive Away.

There are several golf courses, the nearest just 15 minutes drive away, and the new Autodromo do Algarve, F1 designed race track, features various motorsport events and track days and if you are up to it, a stunning go kart track open to the public. The busier tourist areas of the south coast and the town of Portimao with shopping malls, night life, sardine restaurants, sandy beaches and marina is just 25 minutes away. Take a boat trip from Portimao or Lagos to watch the dolphins in their natural habitat.

Shopping in Nearby Portimao.

Portimao has now surpassed Faro to become the shopping mecca of the Algarve and is just 20 minutes drive from Monchique. Boasting the largest shopping mall on the Algarve, Aqua Portimao is situated just 20 minutes drive from Monchique, on three floors with 117 shops, restaurants and a hypermarket, again parking is free. We stayed at this villa for a week July 2025- 2 adults and 2 teens. Booking experience was great and Nigel sent lots of helpful info. What an amazing property. The view from the garden and infinity pool alone was worth the booking. All set in a beautiful cork oak forest. The roads to the property are windy and steep - but the cooler mountain breeze and stunning scenery are worth it. The villa has everything you need - comfy beds, pool towels, decent sized fridge freezer, outdoor furniture inc sun loungers, off-road parking. The nearby supermarket is well stocked. We did a few trips - a boat trip to see the Benagil Caves and dolphins, a beach trip to Praia de Odeceixe, a water park trip and a zoo trip, All good- and then lovely to get back to our quiet haven. We enjoyed some night swims with the pool lights on, gecko spotting and using the BBQ. The gardens are beautiful. Air con a bonus

Positive: - the view is AMAZING: you can really see the sea from there and in the night you see the sparkling lights of Portimao - the villa is very well maintained, well equipped and spacious - the beds are most comfortable - the pool is beautiful and very clean - the garden around the house is nicely designed and maintained - what you see is what you get: the pictures depict what it really looks like - everything was in excellent condition (from bathroom to kitchen to TVs) - did I mention that the view is amazing? ;-) Negative: - the winding street to the villa is an experience ;-) - that we had to leave at the end of the week Would we return to this villa? Hell, yes!

We stayed two weeks with our two teenage boys and Granny. Had a super time, the villa was perfect in every way, the beds very comfortable and linen and towels top notch. The lounge is well furnished and we used our Netflix account on the TV though there was a good selection of English programs as well. The kitchen is well equipped and the outside entertainment area was used every day. The views from the villa are quite something, literally, from every window and we sat out late at night watching the sparkling lights along the coast. The kids were in the pool for hours at a time even Granny went in. The kids made friends with the neighbours black lab Duke. We had several barbecues and ate at some of the restaurants that the owner recommended, all were very reasonable with good food, friendly service, it was nice that we were not rushed, very relaxing, our favourite was the wild boar and an black pork, the kids loved the chicken piri piri, Granny liked the fresh fish. We spent quite a few days visiting some of the west coast beaches, Arifana was the best for body boarding but all of them are unspoiled and not too crowded. We spent a day in Lagos which is a very nice town with a lovely marina that do all kinds of boat trips. All in all the villa was very good value for the excellent quality provided and so we have decided to come back next year. We would certainly recommend this villa for any one wanting a quality holiday at a very reasonable price. Well done Nigel

We have rented villas on the coast of the Algarve for many years but have grown weary of the traffic, crowds and being overcharged in restaurants for mediocre food. So we tried Monchique, what a revelation! We found Villa Vida Nova on the internet and discovered the cleanest and best equipped villa we have ever rented. The views are spectacular and the location very convenient for everything. There are dozens of quality restaurants serving dishes we never new existed at prices half those on the coast. The town is cute with quaint shops and cafe's, unpretentious, there is an honesty about Monchique, the people are friendly and the place feels safe. We explored superb beaches on the west coast and found country roads which took us to villages, Alferce and Marmelete come to mind and the same integrity was found there. We are sorry that we did not discover Monchique years ago. We booked the villa with Nigel who gave us vouchers for discounts at several restaurants, he also advised us on getting a great deal on renting a car. Monchique and Vida Nova are going to become our first choice for our holidays from now on.

We had two wonderful weeks at this amazing villa. Everything went to plan, the flights, the car rental which the owner advised us where to get a great deal, we arrived and were so grateful for the complimentary wine, we needed it. We stocked up with groceries at Intermarche and had a BBQ the first night. Hubby and his bro did some great chops and sausage whilst the children played in the infinity pool. We also had a dip later with the pool lights on, that was quite something as you can see the twinkling lights of the coast at eye level. The villa itself looks like it was built yesterday, everything looks new and is so well kept, the maid never stopped working, she was lovely even though we could only grasp the gist of what she was saying. The beds are very comfortable and the sheets crisp, towels fluffy, kitchen was better equipped than ours at home, seriously. We climbed the hill up to the closest restaurant, Luar something? It was brilliant, loads of food great service and small portions for the kids. All in all this has been the best villa we have ever stayed in and would recommend it to anyone wanting something which is a cut above the rest. We intend making this a regular holiday venue, the location suits us very much, we love nature the greenery the peace and quiet and privacy yet we could walk into town, although with the kids we didn't. We are counting the days to our next visit!

Stayed here a week and sorry to have to go home. Cannot fault this villa and we have stayed in many far more expensive places. Extremely good value. Superbly appointed, clean and comfortable. The owners have done a great job in creating this lovely holiday home. A very peaceful, safe, private and sunny location with breathtaking views of the coast. Pool was warmer than I expected for October. The villa is everything if not more than what the website portrays. We have booked again for 2018, thank you Nigel

Can't wait to return to this superb holiday location. This is still the Real Portugal, everything is authentic and honest and the local people lovely. We ate out most days because the restaurants are excellent value for money and the variety of food is simply amazing. We did fish and meat on the BBQ a couple of days, bought at the local supermarket which has a good variety, the BBQ works great, wish I had one as good at home. The villa is very well maintained and clean, you would not think anyone had stayed previously. Nigel the owner answered dozens of questions quickly and efficiently. Excellent value for money, we have paid a lot more for a lot less, believe me. I would recommend this to anyone wanting high end but at a very reasonable price. We are planning to return for 3 weeks in November.

We were six adults and all agree that this was the best holiday villa we have ever stayed in. The owner and staff have done a terrific job in providing everything we would have hoped for. The furnishings, beds, linen, is first class. The maid is delightful and every thing is so well cleaned we wish we could take her home. The pool and outside eating area is stunning and the views are amazing. The town of Monchique is lovely with so many restaurants we were spoiled for choice. We will be back for sure.

The villa is just amazing the description and photos do not do it justice. It is 5 star luxury and we have never stayed in a villa of this quality before. We have paid the same and more but got the typical mediocre holiday let stuff. The owners have made this paradise. We used the pool and bbq everyday, so well equipped, Wifi was great and free. We found easy drives to either coast and the local restaurants are just so cheap but gourmet food. Excellent. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a perfect holiday. Oh Thank you for the complimentary wine Nigel! See you soon.

We have had rental villas in Portugal before, last year we tried a villa for rent on the coast and decided that the coastal area was not for us. Then we found Villa Vida Nova when searching the internet and it seemed to be the perfect villa so we booked. Best choice ever. The website does not do it justice. Everything about this villa is top class, the furniture is excellent quality not what you usually find in rentals in Portugal or anywhere for that matter. We enjoyed the outdoors just as much with lots of seating and sun loungers with plenty of shady spots, we had BBQ most nights and sometimes walked up to the restaurant up the hill.So cheap and excellent food. The location is ideal for exploring and the town is a delight and quirky. We will be back next year with friends. The maid was a delight too, very efficient.
