Midway, Kentucky
This unique, early 1800’s historic house sits 50 FEET from the railroad. The train blows by 3x during the day, tooting & whistling away & once or twice at night. It is the second oldest residence built in Midway. The plot of land where the house sits was one of the initial purchases from the railroad company which was the first town in KY to build a Railroad Town.
Guests will enjoy their private, bright & cozy upstairs with 2 nicely sized bedrooms with plenty of closet space. The bathroom in between the bedrooms & breakfast nook is very small, but clean & efficient. There is a mini fridge, coffee & tea station. Ice bucket @ 5:00 pm each night is available upon request. Entrance & exit is through the front door & through the one-room art gallery which is closed off from the rest of the house. 9 ORIGINAL VERY STEEP & NARROW STAIRS leads to the cheery upstairs accommodations. STAIRS ARE NOT FOR PEOPLE WITH MOBILITY ISSUES. BIG, HEAVY SUITCASES ALSO WILL POSE A PROBLEM IF YOU ARE NOT UP FOR WRANGLING THEM UP THE 9 STAIR CLIMB. Please see pictures :)
Ample off street parking is available. If you are bicycle-touring/racing, garage arrangements in back can be be made for bicycles. Off street horse trailer parking can also be arranged.
Ellen, the host, lives in the back part of the house which is closed off from the art gallery room & upstairs. The only contact would be if Ellen is in the gallery with customers during the day. Since the house is on the residential side of Main St. (aka Railroad St.) people do not know really know the gallery is there. It is more of an appointment-based gallery which Ellen prefers for much needed private time in the studio (which is also closed off). She can be reached anytime if needed on her cell phone preferably by text during your stay. Guests really enjoy walking to the restaurants & shops which are only half a block away.
The house and yard were adorable. Ellen was a gracious hostess and very good with communication. The downtown was wonderful with good restaurants and walkable from the house. We really enjoyed our stay.
Highly recommend this unique accommodation tucked away in the center of downtown Midway.
Great place to go and get away from everything. Midway is a charming small town. Loved the limited technology, just what you bring, it’s a great way to live. Ms Skidmore’s house was charming and elegant. Her artwork is a very nice touch throughout. Highly recommended.
A girlfriend and I had an event in Frankfort, just 15 miles away, and wanted a more interesting experience than can be found in a hotel. We both really enjoyed this home, full of the owner/artist’s colorful, whimsical art. Each of us had a spacious bedroom of antique furniture, with a small well equipped bathroom, and a sitting area with window, coffee, tea and small refrigerator off of the landing between us. The gardens were beautiful, and Ellen was a great host. The steps are steep but we had no problems climbing them, and the rope handrail felt authentic. We would definitely stay here again. We also enjoyed the eclectic little shops and restaurants in downtown Midway, within easy walking distance.
Beautiful home, perfectly and accurately described. Ellen was a great host. Her art is inspirational. The small town of Midway was a breath of fresh air from the city. Everyone we encountered was gracious and polite. We can't wait to visit again.
As two working moms, we were excited to have a weekend where our calendars aligned. This cute little house was the perfect space and location. In the morning we were able to walk and grab a cup of coffee before heading out to a few distilleries. In the evenings, we took advantage if the nearby restaurants. The space was clean and there were cute touches throughout. As stated in the description, the stairs up are narrow and steep. The shower is also very small, functional and clean, but small. If you sleep late, you will want to know there are a couple trains that go by “early”(after 7 am). The tracks are just on the other side of the street close to the front of the house. As an early riser, this wasn’t a problem for me. Overall, it was prefect for two moms needing a couple of nights away. I would definitely stay here again.
We were in town for the Land Rover three day event. Midway was charming and the people were unbelievably friendly! Ellen was awesome. Her home was comfortable with delightful furnishings and really added to our experience.
This is our 3rd stay with Ellen for a well needed girl’s weekend. As always, we left with more great memories. Ellen is a very attentive host and we love the convenience of being able to walk to the dinner on Main St. Having coffee in the morning was very cozy. That’s all we needed! Thanks Ellen, We’ll be back.
Ellen was a wonderful She was very knowledgeable about the area and gave us many fantastic recommendations for activities and eateries. The accommodation were as stated on the site. Lovely!
A new experience for us…nothing else like it! Wonderfully novel!
Brought our mom to midway to celebrate her 70th birthday. Our stay was amazing. Ellen is the best!! The place was just perfect!
This house was very beautiful and accommodating for our needs!!!!
My stay couldn’t have been more perfect! The horse park is a short drive and several excellent restaurants are within walking distance. The town of Midway and the accommodations were absolutely charming. Ellen’s beautiful artwork, fascinating life story and love of horses (as evidenced in her art) made my stay even more memorable and special. I would definitely recommend a stay here. Ellen, thank you so much for a fabulous stay.
Ellen’s house is a perfect location in Midway. It is within walking distance of shopping and the wonderful Heirloom Restaurant. It is a short and beautiful drive to Keeneland and many distilleries. Her home is charming, comfortable and full of her exquisite art! I want to own every piece ❤️ She is an excellent host and I would highly recommend her home to any visitor to Kentucky!
We had a wonderful stay. The house was so cute and comfortable. Very affordable and we will definitely be staying again.
We loved our time at Ellen's place. Cute, cozy, and in the center of little downtown Midway, KY. Walking distance from many great little restaurants, bars, and shops and a great walking trail too. Thanks Ellen!
Staying at Ellen's was very refreshing. Ellen was very easy to work with and very patient with answering my questions. I was a little concerned about being near the train tracks, but it was very cool! Most of the time we didn't know it had went by! The steep stairs were challenging, but staying in a historical place made it worthwhile.
We had a wonderful stay in this adorable property. Very clean, comfortable bedrooms in a very quaint little house and community. Hostess was wonderful and we enjoyed all of her whimsical artwork. Bathroom is small but everything else totally makes up for it. We would definitely stay here again! Also, love Kentucky! Very convenient location!
Cannot say enough wonderful things about our 4 night stay at the Railway House in Midway, KY! From the darling home with very comfortable accommodations, immersion in the owner's gallery of bright whimsical equine art, the location in picturesque Midway to Ellen's gracious hospitality and engaging personality, made our visit 5 star plus! Great location & proximity to the entire Bluegrass area and Midway is the quintessential quaint Southern town with a variety of great restaurants and shops. We are looking forward to many more visits with Ellen!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this charming and unique place. We loved the original features of the house, and the location was perfect for walking to restaurants and shops. Ellen is a wonderful host and artist and our stay at the house made our trip extra enjoyable.
We thoroughly enjoyed staying here while in Lexington/Louisville. Midway is a great small town and the rental is clean, lovely, and comfortable.
I was looking forward to staying in this darling rental in Midway above the studio of a well known Kentucky artist. Someone mentioned the steep steps in a post. I contacted the owner and we had some miscommunications. The steps are narrow and very steep. Not for older folks with bad knees. Great location but we could not navigate the steps much less get our small suitcases up. This is a wonderful place… so picturesque with a cute garden in front. Restaurants and cute shops close by. I hate to post this but I think there are many older travelers who might have this problem too.
Again, we were not disappointed staying at Ellen’s in Midway. No problems coming and going as we pleased. Very comfy rooms and beautiful artwork. Since we are repeat guests, we knew the stairway is steep and bathroom sink is small but not a big deal. The downtown has nice shops and restaurants. Beautiful drives everywhere and close to Lexington. . We love staying here and will definitely be back. Ellen is a wonderful artist and hostess.
