On three acres of jungle and gardens, with 50 meters of beachfront, this open-air home, accompanying gardens, and a small pool, is perfect a couple or a family.
We are set up for 4 guests, in two double beds, in the two bedrooms. Beyond that, it is an additional $20 per day to bring in more beds and bedding. We can accommodate up to eight in the main house.
Finca Sombrero y Camisas offers an alternative to a full-service lodge.
Plus, good wifi if you need it.
Comfortable, yetsimple, this beautiful beachfront home is off the beaten trail.
Wake up to howler monkeys and enjoy sunrise across the Golfo Dulce from the pristine beachfront, as you sip your morning coffee. Scarlet macaws fly overhead in pairs. Toucans swoop through the yard. As many as four types of monkeys have seen spotted on the property in one day. Spider and squirrel monkeys fly overhead from tree to tree, and howlers and white face monkeys pass through here as well. And if you are lucky, you will spot the occasional sloth.
There is something here for everyone: waterfall hikes and repelling, tree canopy tours, horseback riding, bird watching, yoga classes and surf lessons from locals. It's private and peaceful, yet walking distance to a handful of Mato Palo surf breaks.
Great for families and guests of all ages.
Curl up in a hammock, or hang at the pool, and enjoy nature all around you. And if you don't feel like cooking, there is a great restaurant within walking distance.

This is truly a jungle experience, in an open-air home, complete with insects, bats cruising through around sunset, howler monkeys at the break of dawn and birds signing, hummingbirds buzzing the flower arrangements, and animals that will come into the kitchen at night if you leave food out.

Due to the open-air nature of our home, no loud parties are allowed.

It's not for everyone, but most are thrilled to be immersed in the rawness of nature, yet in the comfort of your home. It truly is a once-in -a-lifetime experience for most of our guests. And for those world travelers, they attest that they've never been at a place with so much biodiversity, yet right on the beach.

This open-air home and accompanying gardens and pool, is set up for 4 guests, in two double beds with a mosquito net.
Additional $20 per night per person for up to eight total in the main house.

PLUS: Check out our new rental on the property that sleeps four: La Joya, right on the beach with a view of the waves and Golfo Dulce / Pacific Ocean. Great for a smaller group, or add to the amount of people in the main house to accommodate a large group.

A wonderful place to truly connect with nature. We were lucky to see a resident tamandua, along with plenty of monkeys, birds, and even peccaries. The completely open-air design and the sound of rain on the metal roof make this home especially memorable. The naturally fed pool is a beautiful, refreshing spot to relax, and the easy access to the beach is a huge bonus. It’s a very simple setup, so be sure to bring your own food (including coffee) as well as basics like soap and shampoo. Oscar is extremely helpful and responsive, which made the stay smooth and enjoyable.

We had a great stay in this beautiful property. As described, it is like a tree-house in the jungle--the walls are open, we had hummingbirds darting in and out. I thought the heat and noise of the jungle might be too much, but actually was very lulling, and felt great to go to sleep and wake up with the sun and the sounds of all the birds, monkeys, insects and more. The kitchen is very well-equipped. We arranged for a local cook to prepare meals several evenings with food we purchased at the grocery store in town, and she did a great job. The showers are outdoors, which again is great as long as you are comfortable being one with nature. The caretaker who lives on-site did a great job of helping us with any questions and arranging tours at our request. We enjoyed surf lessons, kayaking in the mangroves, horseback riding on a deserted beach, and an amazing day seeing so many animals at Corcovado National Park. We also just enjoyed swimming at the beautiful beach right on the property, and cooling off at the pool. The wifi worked great, which made my teenager happy, but even better was family time enjoying the gentle surf, amazing stars, and unbelievable wildlife.

This is an experience that you likely haven't had before...You are in an open-air home with only curtains between you and nature. Lots of room, one inside toilet upstairs. You'll share the house with crabs, lizards, spiders, and more. You'll hear howler monkeys and macaws at 5 AM and the cicadas at night, but surprisingly, not as loud as we expected. If you are there for a thunderstorm, it is amazing with the rain pounding down around you, while you stay nice and dry inside. Unfortunately, we didn't see anything other than hummingbirds, a coati, and lizards at the house. When we walked up the dirt road, we were able to see howler monkeys and white-faced monkeys, but we had hoped they would be on site. We did follow the sounds of a group of macaws while on site to an almond tree where they were feasting. The pool is refreshing as it was hot - 93 most days. The beach is rocky and not for sunbathing or easy to get down to. Surfing a 20 minute walk down the road at the official beach looked great - really long runs, but still rocky, so not a typical beach. Oscar was amazing. Arranged a night hike for us and we saw spider monkeys, tarantulas, cockroaches, snakes, frogs, scorpions, and more. Martina's, the restaurant, is good. You won't want to leave once you are at the house. It takes 30 minutes to get from town down a VERY rocky and bumpy road. With a large 4-wheel drive, we blew out a tire and saw others experience the same fate. Thanks, Oscar and John for everything!

Deep in the heart of the Gulfo Dulce in the sweet little village of Matapalo. This place is glamping at it's finest, with an awesome camp kitchen and a pool. We saw macaws and spider monkeys EVERY DAY! Even a spider monkey with her baby coming to eat from the trees right next to the house. We also saw agouti, anteater, armadillo, hummingbirds, and many beautiful small birds drinking nectar from the gardens. There's an awesome expat bar and restaurant in very close walking distance, Martina's that serves food and drinks, and the beach Pan Dulce is a short walk or drive with awesome resorts nearby where you can go for food or drinks. Oscar, the caretaker who lives onsite, hooked us up with a last minute trip into Corcovado. Oscar is incredibly caring and we felt so safe and cared for! The teens had a bit of a challenge dealing with the heat and lack of privacy, but they pulled through and had a life changing experience on the Osa Penninsula! Thank you so much for the experience! Highly recommended.

We enjoyed our stay at this jungle property. The house was well-equipped and clean. You are definitely in the jungle and wildlife viewing was great. Walking on the beach with macaws soaring and monkeys in the trees was definitely a one of a kind experience.

What a rainfroest treasure! We wanted to be immersed in nature, away from crowds yet still connected to local culture. Finca de Sombreros y Camisas exceeded our imagination! The open air design surrounded us with a lush green jungle canopy and a symphony of spider monkeys, toucans, coati, iguanas, cicadas, macaws and a resounding howler monkey baritone. The cool fresh water dipping pool was a perfect refresh from the humidity. The well-manicured grounds and pathway to the beach provided a sweet saunter to the rocky tides. The house was clean, well appointed and Oscar helped us settle into the space easily. It was the perfect balance of living authentically with the basic comforts of home. Best Christmas getaway ever!

This is such a wonderful spot and was everything we hoped it would be and more. The location is beautiful, and sounds and sights around you are incredible and force you to slow down and just take it all in. To live in a space so open to the nature surrounding you (including geckos climbing the walls and crabs looking to hide in the bedroom!) is an experience none of us in the family will soon forget. I already miss watching macaws fly overhead while lazing in the hammock and waking (early!) to birdsong and howling monkeys. As well, John was super about answering questions and offering help, and Oscar's thoughtfulness made the whole experience even richer. Thanks John for sharing your little piece of paradise with others (and thanks for the pool - what a difference it makes!!!). We all hope to return again soon.

This open air house was just what we all needed! We were fortunate to have a rental car to go to all the surrounding beaches, waterfalls, and tours. Although, there were plenty of restaurants and beaches within walking distance. We enjoyed exploring it all! We arranged a wonderful night hike with Oscar and my kids loved riding in the back of his pickup truck. My youngest hit it off with Oscar’s son and they played tag and ping pong at Martina’s Restaurant right next door. The pool was always refreshing and our morning wake up calls were an absolute delight! We witnessed Howler and Spider monkeys daily, usually multiple times a day. Scarlet Macaws, Parrots, Black Hawks, and several other beautiful birds were with us throughout our week stay! Every day was a new adventure! We enjoyed being further away from the city so we could soak up all the amazing sounds from the ocean waves to the jungle! We will definitely return to this paradise!Go ahead and do yourself a favor and book!
