Whistling Duck: Private Oceanfront Cottage

Looking for a hut on a deserted beach, we found Long Island delivered the peace we craved, while the Whistling Duck cottage far exceeded expectations. It is well-equipped, comfortable, and beautifully landscaped by a weekly gardener. Tip: bring binoculars to watch the marine life and marina traffic.Pro-Tips for Long Island: * Provisioning: Since goods are shipped in weekly, stock is often low and prices are high. We used Shan Wilson for pantry pre-stocking and pre-prepared meals. Her service was invaluable and highly recommended. * Water: The cottage uses a rain cistern. Conservation is vital, and while there is a kitchen filter, we preferred bottled water for drinking. * Transportation: A 4x4 or SUV is essential if you plan to explore. Side roads to the beaches are often impassable for standard cars.The Experience:The location is the true highlight—just 25 steps from a private beach cabana. We spent every morning on the porch watching rays swim by. While the trade winds are lovely, be prepared for midges when the breeze drops.Owners Peter and Pam are excellent hosts. Peter provides detailed arrival info and consistent weather updates via email. This property easily earns its 10/10 rating.

We wrestled with leaving this review as we definitely plan to return and don't want to have to jockey for reservations! BUT, the hosts are wonderful and highly communicative, and Violet is an absolute gem! We stayed here 2 weeks after hostoric Hurricane Melissa passed through. Our trip did not go as planned, thanks to a gale force warning that was in place all week, as well as unexpected issues not related ot the cottage but the cottage itself was phenomenal and a welcome home base as we navigated our way through the week. Our flight off the island was cancelled, with no available flights until the next day, and Violet graciously allowed us to stay another night, otherwise we would've been sleeping on the floor at the airport! We are eager to return and experience Long Island when there isn't weather and supply issues & will absolutely be staying at Whistling Duck when we do!

The cottage was perfectly equipped, and had everything we needed. There were even some surprises, like a big Yeti cooler that we could take to the beach, and better than average cooking tools. We found the cottage to be a perfectly comfortable home base, with absolutely stunning, unbeatable views. Peter and Pam were so nice and helpful, even helping lead us to a grocery store upon our arrival to get provisions. It was an excellent experience, and we’d go back again just for the rustic simplicity of the island and its views, coupled with the comforts of that cottage.

We came back and stayed at the Whistling Duck. It is such a wonderful cottage directly on the water. It is comfortable and spotlessly clean. Peter was easy to work with and the host, Violet, is kind and wonderful. We can’t wait to come back.

Whistling Duck is well-equipped and perfectly situated to accommodate your visit to Long Island. A peaceful, gorgeous setting with incredible hosts.

The property is stunning, it even exceeded our expectations! The cottage has everything you need and the beautiful water right at your feet. The hosts Peter and Pam were welcoming and made our trip perfect.

What a perfect place to unplug and truly relax. Great hosts, phenomenal location and a natural swimming pool of an ocean steps from the door. Truly a great spot.

Our week long stay at Whistling Duck was nothing short of AMAZING! Pam was such a gracious host. She was full of helpful information. We spent the week exploring the island, going to some of the places she suggested. Took an afternoon kayak trip to the cay across the bay. Beautiful. The house has everything you need for a stay. Already planning our trip back to stay here! This is a beautiful cottage in a prime location on the island.

My wife and I had an incredible time on long island and Duck Whistle was comfortable, clean with beautiful views. We enjoyed our time relaxing, walking the beaches, having fresh fish, swimming and exploring. We would love to return in the near futures. Ken/Margo

We had a wonderful stay at Peter and Pam’s cottage. Everything was as described. They were both here to welcome us and provided with a lot of useful information. Sleeping with the sound of the waves and crickets. We did not want to leave. Definitely recommend this little cottage on the sea!

Whistling Duck was great, loved the views and kayaking out front. Great communication with Peter and helpful tips for our trip. Long Island is a gem, beautiful spots and kind locals. Hope to visit again!
