Lutz is a community of about 20,000 people in Hillsborough County in the state of Florida. It covers a total area of about 27 square miles, of which slightly less than 10 percent is water. The unincorporated census-designated place (CDP) is made up of 16 neighborhoods and is considered part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area.
The history of Lutz goes back to the building of a small depot in the vicinity along the Tampa Northern Railroad. The area around the depot was named for W. P. Lutz, who was said to have contributed in ensuring that the railroad is extended to the community. The name was made official when a post office of the same name was approved by the United States Postal Service. The number of residents grew as more and more people moved there from Tampa.
