Positioned in the proximity of Georgia's Hospitality Highway, Dawsonville is a small city in Dawson County, for which it serves as county seat. It was founded as the seat of the newly-created Dawson County in 1857 and named in honor of Senator William Crosby Dawson. Dawsonville's incorporation as a town was done in 1859. It was incorporated as a city more than 90 years later – in 1952.
The community, which belongs to the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell Metropolitan Statistical area, is home to less than 3,000 people while covering slightly more than 8 square miles. The population was estimated at 2,525 in 2015. While the number of its residents might not appear significant, Dawsonville has experienced rapid growth since 2000, when its resident count was just over 600. The planned Chestatee golf community is arguably the most popular in this small city. It offers a serene ambiance with its location along the scenic Lake Lanier and its beautiful landscapes and sidewalks. This is one of those communities that are designed to promote the spirit of unity among neighbors.
Residents of Dawsonville have access to a decent educational system. Pre-school to grade-twelve education is taken care of by the Dawson County School District, which had 219 full-time teachers and more than 3,000 students as of 2010. The only public high school in the area, Dawson County High School, is highly rated.
Renowned for its long-time involvement in auto racing, Dawsonville has a racing theme on its city hall. A popular destination for car racing fans around here is Gordon Pirkle's Dawsonville Pool Room. The city is home to former NASCAR driver Bill Elliot, an inductee of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and his son Chase, who races in the Sprint Cup series. Racing skills of many residents was originally attributed to moonshine activity around the community, which celebrates Mountain Moonshine Festival every October.
Dawsonville is the location of the Southern Terminus of the about 2,150-mile long Appalachian Trail, so you are not far away from the best of hiking experience.
