The huge concrete gravel “Hopper” at the end of the property by the picnic area was built to allow train cars and trucks to drive under and have the gravel loaded into cars to take to construction sites. Every now and then at the bottom of the 22 acres we get to see an incredible freight train pass and appreciate the commerce, industry, jobs, and vibrancy it represents.brbrThe “Hopper” which is an incredible concrete marvel, was built in 1920, so it is over 100 years old! And still as incredible and stable as it was. Many guests like to do events, long-table dinners and others activities under the Hopper.brbrAs the stone was removed using big equipment, explosives and other means, and the depth got down past 90 feet, the natural water table was breached and a few small “springs” started to fill the quarry, the company tried to mitigate the water and direct it as they continued to mine, but after the 5th natural spring, the water rose too quickly, and the lake was formed. Those 5 natural springs still feed the quarry today. The water level does not change much, outside of torrential rains. On any given day the quarry reflects the weather, wind, and topography, sometimes the water is still as glass, some days ripples, on some days the wind dances invisibly on the surface.
